While I still believe my general question will help others who research Carter County Marriages, I am happy to report that I have found the name I was after in another extant record.
I newspaper article confirm my suspicion that Jacob's brother Aaron was later known as Harry and had moved to Kitsap, Washington. I was directed to records on him that gave his parents' names as Samuel D. Courtright and Alby Curtis.
Coincidently I also found a record about Eliphalet's death which gave the parents names as David Cortright and Alba Westfall.
Because the former record was reported by a son, and the latter by a surviving relation of Eliphalet's, and Westfall was the maiden name of his paternal grandmother, I believe Harry's report is more reliable. Alba Thornton Ruff, granddaughter of the above Alba named one son Ambrose Thornton Ruff and another Curtiss Albert Ruff. Ambrose became known as A. Thornton Ruff. Alba, it seems, liked turning last names into first names, and even spelled Curtiss the way it is spelled in surnames.

It would be nice to know what Jacob said of his parents- but it is no longer a priority to find out.

I can't answer your question about when family info was added to TN marriage records. The only ones I've seen with parents names is when the bride is under legal age.

I can give you a bit of information on Delia E. WHITEHEAD born about 1837 TN resided in Carter Co.. TN daughter of William Whitehead and Margaret Miller. She was married twice. 1st Delia Whitehead m. John Chambers at Carter Co.. TN on 8 Mar 1888; and 2nd Delia Chambers m. J. H. Cortwright on 3 Apr 1916. She is called DELIA CHAMBERS in the below short obituary.....

The Elizabethton Star, Elizabethton, TN - Friday, Feb. 20, 1931
MRS. DELIA CHAMBERS
Mrs. Delia Chambers, 76, died at her home on Tiger Creek, Thursday night at 11 o'clock as the result of a prolonged illness. Funeral services will be held from the home Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment will follow in the Chambers cemetery.
The deceased is survived by one son, Dan Chambers, Tiger Creek; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Dugger; Mrs. Ellen Whitmore, of Elizabethton; two brothers, W. L. Whitehead and Nat Whitehead, Elizabethton.

I can send you copies of the marriage records neither of which lists age or parents names....

contact me....
jerrystout@sbcglobal.net

I am interested in learning when full marriage records that include the names of the couple's parents began to be kept. If anyone was experience ordering from the Tennessee Library and Archives collection. I know by the 1920's all counties in TN were keeping both the basic data that is available online and the full records. I read the date when bothh were kept varied by county.
Also no mention of whether persons near the library are allowed to search records themselves for free, if so that would be good to know.

I need to know the parents of J. H. Cortwright who married Delia Chambers on 5 April 1916. I have a death record for Delia, so I know she was born Delia Whitehead and is married in Chambers Cemetery in Tennessee.

I think J. H. is the son of Samuel and Abbe and I am especially hoping to learn Abbe's maiden name because she is a direct ancestor. I have seen the license and bond info/ copy on familysearch- so I don't need it- just a record with parent's names. It didn't sound like the fires I read about destroyed marriage documents, so I am hopeful the complete information is out there.

I am not sure why they married. J. H. was an army invalid and in and out of treatment centers- he was born in NJ and then lived in the southern tier of NY until his father died. Of his siblings he was the only one to add a W to Cortright/Courtright. He lived for a time in PA with the McKeeby's after his father died. Enlisted in Rochester NY with a Calvary Div. and served in the Civil War. He was a widow for several years after his wife (or wives?) Angeline/Jennie died. One of his Vet. papers mentions a son Isaac or Roan Mtn. Tn- not sure which wife he fits with, probably not Delia.
To sum up, I have followed all his siblings and his mom, looking for an event that would give the parent's names. This is the only one I have definite info about, and it is recent enough to have hope, but if the full rec. does not exist- it's 20$ to get a copy of what I already have because I do not live in TN.

I have emailed a local historian, and I am trying to be patient, but I get a little obsessive when it comes to this stuff, and besides- knowing when full records were made will benefit other people with the same question. My only fear is the retention of the full records actually varies not by county, but by town- maybe that can be determined too, if a lot of people post who have ordered the records.

I could not find the people named in your inquiry in earlier census records. I found a draft registration that gives Marion B. Briggs birth date as 8 Dec 1876. I also found death record of Snookum Perdue Briggs in Raleigh, WV if you don't have it.
Since I was looking at a transcript, I suggest you try to get a copy of the original. A website on Virginia records indicates the following:

The Archives Division, The Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219-1905, (804) 692-3500, has copies of surviving Virginia birth and death records for the period 1853 to 1896 and marriage records prior to 1936. These records are public information and are available on microfilm for use by the public. The Library of Virginia does not have copies of birth and death records from the Office of Vital Records for public use after 1896. There is no charge for viewing the microfilm of these records. Copies of the microfilm may be lent to other libraries from The Library of Virginia - Archives Division, Inter Library Loan Department. They lend the microfilm to libraries nationwide for 28 days with no renewals and there is a limit of 5 reels per patron which are sent at no charge.

Good Luck- I did not search family trees to see if they came up there. If you can get the names of either the bride or grooms siblings that will aid the search tremendously.

In answer to your question. No I do not have actual marriage records for the WHITE family. I have two books on Carter Co. TN Marriages, neither [the latest one by Eddie Nikazy] have information other than the names and date. I do have access to Ancestry.com and their data base "Tennessee State Marriages 1780-2002" There is an image for the Marriage Bond for Oliver W. Reece & Rosie White; also an image for their Marriage License & marriage. Neither of these have any information on their age or their parents names.

Jerry

I found a marriage record. It is I. M. Briggs b. 1876 NC.
Age 26 married Della Wilson b. 1881 TN age 21. (Apparently the old Della got the younger she said she was, I find this a lot with records of women).
Married 28 July 1902 in Norton, Wise, Va.
His parents are listed as Ja. Bigs and Sarah Bigs
Hers are Jas. Wilson and Hans Wilson.
This was a transcription of the original. I will look for a census records and get back to you.

Deb 113

I don't need reimbursement, but if you live in TN I may need a favor, am not sure yet.
Hello. I have a question about the marriage records found and mentioned in the above record. I have found a marriage bond and license for a brother of my ancestor. The marriage took place in 1916. The Tennessee State Library and Archives says not all counties retained records with parents names until the 1920's, so I would like to know if you obtained full marriage records on the Whites from the State Library. Apparently, early copies are still out there, as they were given directly to the bride and groom well the county clerk retained only the basic bride, groom, minister and witness names record.
Basically I would like to know how detailed your marriage records are, and if detailed, where they came from.

Thank you.

On the 1830 Carter Census there is a Walter Blevins and John Blevins living near one another. Trying to determine if this John may be Walter's son. My John D. appears in the 1832 Carter court record and then on the 1834 Hawkins County tax list, 1840 Hawkins Census, 1850 Arkansas Census. Anyone have suggestions? Have not been able to determine the parents of John D. Blevins b. 1811 in Tennessee. Thanks.

In doing my research, I found that my great great grandfather had a brother named Robert Love Taylor. I saw some pictures of him and he looked a little rough. But I found that there was a governor named Robert Love Taylor of Tennessee born in the same county in about the same year. Seems too much of a coincidence to be different people, and yet some details are a little off. For instance, I know the have the same ancestor that fought in the revolutionary war, but I believe they have different siblings. Any help?

I don't think I can answer your question directly, but I am also from the Estep/Sweeney line. I can't go back to the 1880s or so from the West Virginia/kentucky line, but that is about where I stopped finding things. So you have, by any chance, a history of young deaths....drowings, seizures, heart conditions? We just got a diagnosis on my son for Long QT syndrome that causes sudden cardiac arrest in the young, as well as faining spells that are usually misdagnosed as seizures. Any of that ring a bell in your research?

Looking for descendants of Thomas Jefferson Russell who was born in 1821 in Carter County. He married Louisa Penix in Carter in 1845. Among the children I am the most interested is Evaline Emma Russell who married a W.A. Touchpaint/Kethpoint in 1875. They had one son Nathaniel born in 1879. Emma later married DANIEL SAMS in 1889. This Touchpaint/Kethpoint name doesn't appear anywhere else and I am concerned that there was a misspelling. Help! Tammmy

I have ancestors buried in the Blevins cemetery in Carter County. They married into the Blevins family, although it appears only 1 distant relative. My family moved into Carter county from NC in the 1800's. Many of them moved in the 1830's as they were living on Indian land and did not become part of the forced Indian removal. They "assimilated" and lived in the mountains.
Rather odd that all but one of Elizabeth's children living with her in 1880 were born after the civil war was over.

Chrisley Christian Williams served in the war but he seems to have survived. There is no information for the 1870 census for this family. The two oldest known children were probably married/gone by 1880. Sarah M Williams b. 1857 and a son born late 1859 early 1860 did not have a name as of June 1860. You probably need to provide who Harrison married.

name: Chrisley C Williams
event: Military Service
year: 1863
age:
military unit (film note): Misc Card Abstracts of Records
nara publication title: Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Tennessee
nara publication number: M395
nara roll number: 202
Citing this Record
"Tennessee, Civil War Service Records of Union Soldiers, 1861-1865," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org

name: Christian C Williams
event: Military Service
year: 1863
age: 25
military unit (film note): Thirteenth Cavalry
nara publication title: Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Tennessee
nara publication number: M395
nara roll number: 108
Citing this Record
"Tennessee, Civil War Service Records of Union Soldiers, 1861-1865," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org

Name: Christian C.
Thank you so much! I am looking for a Delia (maybe Delin) Carver Moore, born May 1988 and died in 1962. I have found her marriage to my grandfather, Walter A. Moore in 1906 but not her birth or death. She was my grandfather's first wife. I have another whole branch of family I would like to learn about. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

There are no Blevins appearing on 1820 Carter Census, 14 Blevins households on 1830 Census, and 4 on 1840 Census. Does anyone have any ideas why there was such an increase from 1820 to 1830? Apparently 100 Blevins surged into Carter County after 1820. I've seen some speculation about them being "squatters" and they may have moved to avoid past taxes? Any ideas?

DR. WILLIAM C. SINGLETARY. Among those who from early manhood have devoted their lives to the cause of suffering humanity, William C. Single-tary may be regarded as among the foremost, and in pursuing the noble calling of medicine he has made fame and fortune for himself. He owes his nativity to Bladen County, N. C., born in 1829; a son of Rev. John and Mary Ann (Johnson) Singletary, both natives of the same county and State as their son. In that State they were liberally educated. afterward married, and in 1830 moved to Carter County, Tennessee, where they passed the closing scenes of their lives, the father dying in 1860 and the mother in 1893, the latter about eighty-one years of age. She was a devout member of the Methodist Church. Mr. Singletary was a Methodist minister of considerable prominence for a quarter of a century. He was also a Mason in good standing, and for eight or ten years was circuit clerk of Carter County. He was a man of more than ordinary ability and influence, and was of English origin, his father having been born in that country. The latter was probably a Revolutionary soldier. The mother of our subject was a first cousin of ex-President Andrew Johnson, but nothing is known of her parents. Five children were born to the parents of our subject as follows: William C., subject; Elizabeth, widow of George W. Ryan; Hester A., widow of Rev. Peter W. Emmett; Thomas V., died in Carter County, Tennessee, long before the war; and Ferdinand A., died in Kansas about 1884. He was all through the war, and served as first lieutenant in the Fourth Tennessee Infantry, Federal Army. Dr. William C. Singletary received a good collegiate education and graduated from Holstine College, Jefferson County, Tennessee When eighteen years of age he began the study of medicine with Dr. Joseph Powell and Dr. G. T. McGee at Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee, and subsequently began practicing in Yancey County, N. C. Later he returned to Carter County, Tennessee, and practiced his profession there until 1857, when he came to Independence County, Arkansas, and the next year to what is now Boone County, where he practiced until the war. In 1862 he was forced into the Third Confederate Infantry of Arkansas troops as a private, but was detailed as assistant surgeon until near the close of the war. He then received a furlough and returned to Tennessee, where he remained until cessation of hostilities. After that he practiced there for three years and returned to Boone County, where he has since practiced with his usual success, and is perhaps the oldest physician in the county. In the year 1880 he graduated from the Medi-cal Department of the Arkansas Industrial University at Little Rock, and afterward devoted his entire time to his profession until a few years ago, 1886, when he located at Elixir Springs for his health. He was a prominent member of the Boone County Medical Society. He owned several farms, about 1,700 acres in all, in Searcy, Marion and Boone Counties, all the fruits of his own efforts. While tesiding in Elizabethton, Tennessee, he was superintendent of public instruction for two years just after the war. On the 20th of March, 1850, he was married to Miss Mary C. Wilson, a native of Yancey County, N. C., and the daughter of James and Mary Wilson, both natives of Yancey County, N. C., where they still reside. Mrs. Singletary died in September, 1854, in Carter County, Tennessee She was the mother of two children: Elizabeth Jane, wife of B. M. G. O'Bryant, of Carter County, Tennessee; and Thomas V., of Yancey County, N. C. In 1859 Dr. Singletary married Miss Mary Jane Hicks, a native of Carroll County, Arkansas, and the daughter of Jonathan A. and Susan Hicks, natives of Tennessee and Carroll County, Arkansas, respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Hicks have been residents of Boone County, Arkansas, for many years. To Dr. and Mrs. Singletary was born one daughter, Flora Belle, who is now the wife of William Keener, of Taney County, Missouri Mrs. Singletary died in 1869, and on 23d of July, 1871, the Doctor married Maria R. Luty, who bore him three daughters: Virginia A., Mary C. and Julia H. Mrs. Maria R. Singletary died January 31, 1885. On the 10th of December, 1886, the Doctor married Mrs. Anna H. Bagley, a native of Kentucky. Dr. Singletary was a Mason, a member of Polar Star Lodge No. 224, Lead Hill, and was a member of the Methodist Church for many years. His wife is an Episcopalian. At one time the Doctor was a Whig in politics, but since the formation of the Republican party he affiliated with the same, although he voted for but one president in his life, Gen. Grant, in 1872. He was well known throughout Boone and adjoining counties, one of its most energetic citizens, and his many friends and acquaintances mourned his death May 2, 1894. He owned a store at Elixir, and his wife is postmistress.

Source: Reminiscent History Of The Ozark Region, pub.
