Civil District 4 and Normandy Lake

Does anyone know if the original Civil District 4 in Coffee County lost land to Normandy Lake in the 1970's? I am trying to figure out whether an ancestor's land from the 1836 time frame would now be under water. He lived in the Riley Creek area of CD 4 but that alone doesn't mean his land is now under water. Don't know how to figure this out. Thanks for any helpful ideas or comments. Marty

my g-grandmother and her son, Martha Crick & John Crick were there in 1900, but I cannot find them after that. He had epilepsey and she was a widow. Do you know if the almshouse closed before 1910 and where they may have sent the inmates?

My gg grandfather owned a livery stable/grocery store on the square in Manchester in the early 1900s-1940s(I think). Needing help finding info or early pics of the square.

My gg grandfather's name was Horace Hickman Bell b.1877 married to Emma Hansen. They stayed at the old jail for a while when their house was being built/fixed up. While there she gave birth to one of her sons, William Houston Bell Sr., my great grandfather.

My name is Deborah Clark and I am the spouse of Donald Wayne Clark who is the last surviving sibling of James Edward Clark. His name is Donald Wayne Clark, born in Tullahoma, TN in 1941 and is currently living in Tullahoma. Jane Martin b. 1806 SC, 1850 census of Bedford Co., Tn. m. in Rutherford Co.,Tn. in 1821 (have this). She marr'd Jonathan Drew b. 1800 NC, 1850 census Bedford Co.,TN. Evidently died prior to 1860 census where his wife Jane moves in with her dau. and son in law in Coffee co., Tn. Son in law Nathan Ward. If memory serves me Nathan and wife marr'd in Southern Illinois. Some of the family had went into Franklin Co.,Illinois.
There is little information on this family available that I have been able to locate.

NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

Thomas Bell

I am looking for any information on Thomas (possibly William Thomas) Bell b. btw 1781-1790 in either South Carolina or Kentucky. At some point he settled in the area of Noah’s Fork of the Duck River which was located in what became Rutherford co. TN in 1803, Bedford co. in 1807, and then eventually Coffee Co. TN in 1836.

He is on the 1830 Bedford County census as head of household with 7 males and 7 females. I am trying to connect him to the individuals below and prove that they are all one family unit. I found him on the 1836 Coffee County tax list with no white polls so age matches up. He is listed on the 1840 Coffee County census with 3 males and 4 females. According to Goodspeed’s History of Tennessee, Coffee County Thomas Bell was one of the early settlers of Coffee County’s 3rd district which was originally part of Bedford County. He no longer appears on the 1850 census for Coffee County but there are a number of interesting names enumerated in his former place in District 3.

1. Family #349 William Nivens and Jane “Jennie” (Bell) Nivens b. 1816 in Tennessee. They married in 1834 and also appear in the 1840 Coffee County census. They owned property on Noah’s Fork near the Thomas Bell estate. The reference I came across stated that some of the land may have been inherited by William’s wife Jane who’s father’s name was Thomas and that William also purchased some of it that her brother John had inherited. There is a John Bell listed on the 1840 Coffee county census that would have been the right age to be one of Thomas Bell’s sons from the 1830 Bedford county census. Jane Bell Nivens also falls into the right age category. William and Jane eventually sold their property and moved their family to Green, Lawrence County, Missouri about 1853. They both died in Missouri but several of their children eventually settled in Alvord, Wise county, Texas.
2. Family #352 James Baker and Mercy (Bell) Baker b. 1813 in Tennessee. Mercy Bell Baker falls into the right age category to be one of Thomas Bell’s daughters from the 1830 Bedford Co. census. These are my ggg-grandparents. They were married in 1838 and were living in Dekalb county Alabama in 1840. By 1843 they are in Coffee County. They eventually moved to Green, Lawrence county, Missouri around 1853 then on to Alvord, Wise county, Texas.
3. Family #354 Thomas Bell (also William Thomas) b. 1825 Tennessee and Sarah (Crosslin) Bell. I have seen a lot of conflicting information about date of death for Thomas Bell and who his father was but according to an entry I found in the Coffee County, Tennessee County Court Loose Records he passed away in 1851.
4. Family #355 James L. Bell b. 1830 Tennessee and Elizabeth Bell b. 1788 Virginia. Both their ages fit to be the youngest child and widow of Thomas Bell from the 1830 Bedford Co. Census. By the 1860 Coffee Co. census there are no longer any Bells living in District 3 so I am unsure what happened to them.
5. Family #357 Josiah Bell b. 1818 Tennessee and Margaret (Hart) Bell. Josiah and Margaret were married in 1845. Josiah Bell falls into the correct age group to be one of the sons of Thomas Bell on the 1830 Bedford Co. census and possibly living with his brother John on the 1840 Coffee Co. census. Josiah and Margaret eventually moved their family to Green, Lawrence, Missouri around 1853 and then eventually on to Grayson Co. Texas. I also came across a reference to a Hart wagon train from the Bedford/Coffee county area that left for Greene co. Missouri in the fall of 1852 so perhaps this is how they all ended up in Missouri. Greene and Lawrence are neighboring counties in Missouri.

Many of the children of these individuals share names such as William, Thomas, James, John, Jane, and Elizabeth. Mercy Bell Baker named one of her sons David Joshiah as well as naming her youngest son William Lafayette. The Lafayette is shared with James Lafayette Bell, youngest son of the younger Thomas.

As of yet, I have been unable to find any information online regarding wills, deeds, probate records etc that would tie these people together.

Any information on any of these individuals or family lines would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for more information on the families listed below. Specifically I would like to know if there are online resources for probate and deed records for Coffee county as well as possibly Bedford county as I am trying to link these individuals together. I found my ggg grandparents James and Mercy Baker on the 1840 census in Dekalb Co. AL and then on the 1850 census in Coffee Co. TN 3rd District living near the 4 Bell men listed below. Mercy’s maiden name was Bell and I feel that Josiah who married Margaret Hart at least is a brother. I have located them together in Green, Lawrence Co. MO in 1860 and then in 1880 in neighboring counties in Texas. Mercy named one of her sons David Josiah.

Their ages for the most part appear to fit in with a Thos. Bell enumerated in 1840 in Coffee Co. and 1830 in Bedford Co. A Thomas Bell is listed as an early settler of Coffee county’s Third District according to Goodspeed’s History of TN, Coffee Co. Any information on this Thos. Bell and his descendents would be greatly appreciated.

Our Braggs are from other Tennessee counties.

George Bragg Sr married a Kittrell descendant.

The TN Kittrells were not so dominant in any county as some other families were in other counties in other states, so as to be related to a large percentage of folk in a TN county.

However Maury was perhaps the largest number of Kittrells from various branches for TN.

James S. Norton married 1st wife Mary Margaret Earp in Coffee Co., TN 2 Sep., 1871 (Coffee Co. Marriage Record Book E, 1870-1897).
According to his death certificate, William N. P. Norton, James S. Norton's son, was born 13 Aug., 1872 in Jackson Co., TN.
James S. Norten(sic) and 2nd wife Lousettie (Darwin) are in Jackson Co., TN in the 1880 census (CD11, household #21).

The whole family moved to Paducah area.

I am wanting to find the marriage of Samuel and Elizabeth and his parents.

I am hoping to prove or disprove a Tyler Dauhgtrey as Samuel's father.
Tyler b. abt 1764 NC, Wife Alice b. abt 1777 NC d. bet 1850-1860
Tyler is in Bedford census 1820-1830, then in Coffee Co 1840. 1850-1860 he is listed in Rutherford County. Then he is lost, presummed dead bef 1870.
I also know the county lines changed those years so he may have stayed in the same location but boundaries changed.

In the 1900 census, 6th district, there is a group of people called INMATES at a place called ALMSHOUSE or something like that. What is that? Poorhouse? Any records for that?

I have found Thomas b 1797 NC & Elizabeth M. Grooms b 1829 TN on the 1850 census in Bedford Co. They are on the 1860 census in Coffee Co. and have 3 children: Lucinda b 1852, Theodorick b 1855, and Malin b 1858. Does anyone have information about this family?
