I found the obituary for my great grandmother, Cynthia Ann Jines. It was printed in The Crockett Times, Alamo, TN, Feb 26, 1948. It states that services were at the Harris Grove Methodist Church and burial was in Climer Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. I can not find this cemetery listed anywhere. Does anyone know where it's located?

John Samuel CLARK, Crockett County Censes 1880

In the 1880 Crockett County census, my grandfather John Samuel Clark shows up at page 235, district 10. His occupation is listed as "Saloon ... R..." with the last word illegible. It might be "runs" but I'm not sure, since there is a little word just above it.

Is there anyone with access to the original census (or maybe a good copy) who can read just what that says?

Also, John Samuel is living in a boarding house. Can anyone make out the family name of the "Sarah F" who runs the boarding house?

Thanks for your help

Nieson or NUNN at Page 238C, 1880 Census
In the 1880 census, ancestry.com transcribes page 238C entry for the operator of the boarding house where Clara Watson and John Clark resided as Sarah F. Nieson, obviously a widow. These entries are in Maury City, District 10

The transcription on the Crockett County website by Natalie Huntley has it as "NUNN." Can anyone help fill in the reason for this change? I understand NUNN is correct. Is there a better copy of the page from the census?

I'm trying to locate this "boarding house," which I understand later became a "hotel" and was in the name of someone different. What are all the designators at the top of each page of the census; do they give clues to actual locations of the respondents?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Clara Watson, Schoolteacher 1880

My grandmother Clara Watson, listed in the 1880 census as "teaching school" and residing in Maury City, District 10, married grandfather John S. Clark in 1881 in Alamo.

I've looked at the county site in Rootsweb, and find basically nothing on Clara Watson.

Does anyone know how to search the name and location of the school where Clara Watson was likely to have taught in 1880? I've looked at Goodspeed's section on schools, but don't find that helpful.

Are there any photos of school pupils/teachers from that era? How about photos of schools themselves?

Thanks.

Dave Clark
dc1999 at gmail dot com

1872 Tax Listing -- J F Clark

I found at the Crockett County library yesterday 5-17-2008 in Alamo a 1974 publication in honor of the 100th year anniversary of the Crockett County courthouse. In the booklet was a host of information about ancestors, people, old pictures etc. The whole book really should be online at the rootsweb site.

One listing in the booklet was of the 1872 Tax Rolls from the county, and I found my g-grandfather listed there, J F Clark.

I tried finding the original list or a microfilm of the Tax Rolls, but the lady in the library could not find a listing in the computer database and hunting through the Genealogy section did not reveal one either.

Does anyone know where one could get a print of the actual tax record? Or any tax records for the County?

Thanks for the help.

Dave
dc 1999 at gmail dot com

My family lived in the area where these 3 counties meet and I find information in all 3 counties of my family. Both cemeteries were in existence in the mid 1940's. My great grandparents' death certificates states they are buried at these cemeteries but my searches have turned up nothing. Varney Jines was buried at Dunagan and Cynthia Jines was buried at Climer. If anyone has any information on either of these cemeteries please contact me.

I am researching an incident from 1872 that eventually turned into a Supreme Court case - US vs Harris - that overturned a part of one if the original civil rights laws.
In August 1872, RG Harris, Sheriff, and 19 other men apparently dragged 4 men from the jail and beat them, killing one. The men were Perry M Wells, George W Wells, Jr, William J Overton and Robert R Smith. Deputy (or Constable?) William A Tucker attempted to stop the act.
The 20 men were charged by the US Attorney with newly established civil rights violations. The case went to the Supreme Court and the convictions overturned.
I am searching for any information anyone might have on this event or anyone associated with it.

She died in 1926 and is buried in Cairo Cemetery.

She married Robert W Cates, son of Felix Grunde Cates and Elizabeth Malvina Jane Roberts. Though, I have found much information about this side of the family tree, I have been unable to trace Alice Eugenia's ancestry.

If you have any information concerning her, such as locations, parents' names, occupation, etc., I would very much appreciate it. And if anyone has copies of wills, deeds, certificates, obituaries on any of the above listed, that would also be great. Thank you.
