Someone else is looking for Rosa. This was posted in 2002. Maybe you know Ray?

I am searching for the Maiden name of my GG Grandmother. Her married name was Rosa E. Zachary. She died 12-9-1943 and is buried in Westview Cenetary in Harmon Co. Her husband's name was Walter Zachary or Zachry. I know very little about her so any information appreciated. Ray E. Homer

I searched the 1880 and 1881 Nashville City Directories for a Dr. John Doran and didn't find any close. No Rodgers, but almost 20 Rogers. You might want to view these online at Google Books - "Nashville Directory Vol 16" for 1880 and "Nashville Directory Vol 17" for 1881.

Ancestry.com has recently added their U.S. City Directory Collection and it includes the
Nashville city directories for the years 1879 through 1899. These are scanned images of
the original directories.

In a listing of physicians who recieved area diplomas was listed John H. Dorgan, who recieved his diploma from the Univ. of Nashville in 1899.
This listing can be found at:
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nashvillearc...
This list is at this site that has gobs of other resources:
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nashvillearc...

The cemetery listings for Davidson County are also online - you can check there for Rodgers/Rogers.
http://davidsoncocemeterysurvey.com/

The Nashville City Cemetery is here:
http://www.library.nashville.org.waldo.library.nashville.org...

Hope this helps.

Birth records DO exist. This is on the Metropolitan Government Archives site (Nashville):

BIRTH/DEATH
Birth Records for Nashville/Davidson Co. span 1881 to 1913. Death Records for the county are 1900 to 1913. Death Records for the City of Nashville are 1874-1913.. Archives staff will search the indexes of birth 1881 to 1913 and death records 1874-1913 for a specific person at no charge. A copy of a microfilmed birth or death record for a specific person is $3.00. Information on Birth and Death Records after 1913 can be obtained from the Tennessee State Library and Archives at 403 Seventh Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37243-0312.
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nashvillearc...

Have you obtained a copy of Rosa's death certificate and obit? Death certificates often record the name of the parents (including mother's maiden name) if they are known to the informant. Obituaries may list surviving siblings and where they are currently living and also provide some biographical information on the deceased.

Where did Rosa marry Walter Zachary? Sometimes marriage applications asked for the parents' names. Sometimes the bondsmen were close relatives of the bride.

Firm of Young and Green, Nashville, 1818-1822

I posted a query here a few days ago about Capt. Joseph Smith, a captain of Nashville's first steamboat, the "General Jackson" in 1818.

I'm posting now to explain a bit more about my interest in Joseph Smith. I'm interested in particular in a firm called Young and Green that did business in Nashville in the period 1818-1822. The firm consisted of business partners John Young and Samuel Kerr Green, with associates James Snodgrass and Isaiah Scott.

This firm was the first set of owners of the "General Jackson," Nashville's first steamboat. Later, the steamboat belonged to William Carroll, whom I find in records relating to Young and Green in the 1818-1822 period.

John Young was born 22 Feb. 1797 and died 3 Oct. 1876 in Henry Co., where he's buried in House Cemetery. Around 1820, he married in Nashville to Caroline Sommerville, daughter of John Sommerville and Elizabeth Chisholm. Caroline was born 26 Jan. 1797 and died 10 Oct. 1822 in Nashville, where she's buried in the Nashville City Cem.

Isaiah Scott drowned in 1820 from the steamboat "General Jackson."

Joseph Smith, first captain of the "General Jackson," married Elizabeth Eakins in Nashville on 31 Aug. 1820. He is buried in Nashville City Cem. with a tombstone stating that he was born in 1787 and died 28 Feb. 1837.

Samuel Kerr Green is my ancestor. He was born in 1790 in 1860. He was in Nashville from around 1818 to 1822, and then moved to New Orleans.

I have accumulated quite a bit of information on the firm of Young and Green and its activities in the period 1818-1822. I'd like very much to be in touch with anyone working on these families or on this firm.

I have heard that there is a cemetery right across the street from the capital building in Nashville Tennessee. Does anyone know the name of it and how to obtain listing of the burials there? I also need to know how to find out who owned the land before the state capital was there. In a family story (which is a complicated one)a ancestor of mine was the land owner and is buried in this cemetery. Any and all heip with this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

From the book, Old Days in Nashville, by Miss Jane Thomas, Chapter 1, "Nashville as I found in in 1804", p. 12:

"Between Mrs. Hay's tavern and the Square lived Mr. Aken, a hatter by trade, and ran a tavern which he called the "Boatman's Tavern." His eldest daughter, Jennie, never married; his second, Elizabeth, married a steamboat captain by the name of Smith, and the youngest married Capt. Minor, another steamboat officer."

I believe your Eliza is this Elizabeth.

This book contains the reminisces of an elderly woman who was born in 1800. Her family moved to Nashville in 1804. She lived to be 97. The book consists of reprints from the Nashville Daily American, 1895-1896.

J.Johnson

According to the book, Steamboatin' on the Cumberland by Byrd Douglas, the steamboat General Jackson had quite a few captains. This steamboat was owned by General Carroll and Mr. Whiting of Nashville (no further identity on Whiting). Its first appearance in Nashville was March 11, 1819, commanded by Captain Smith. A news item in the Nashville Whig dated less than two months later on May 1, 1819, reports a Capt. Young commanding the steamboat.

The third steamboat to reach Nashville (Dec. 12, 1820) was the General Robertson, owned by the Nashville Steamboat Company. It was built in Kentucky and was named for Nashville's founder. Captain Joseph Smith commanded this steamboat. "He had also a turn at the wheel of the General Jackson."

Looking at the Appendix of the book, Joseph Smith also captained the Pacific in 1829.

So we know that Capt. Joseph Smith was captain of steamboats on the Cumberland from March 1819 - 1829. I cannot locate his name in the book after 1829.

This information does not identify Joseph Smith as the man who married Eliza Eakins but it does document that he was commanding steamboats up until 1829. So he was alive until at least 1829.

I have some Akins/Eakins information in my files that I will check to see what else I can find. My Matilda Akins married Frank Ryman in Nashville in 1844. She was the dau. of Moses Akins (1793-1850). Her brother was Milton Akins, who was also a steamboat captain. The Ryman family was also involved with steamboats. Matilda did not have a sister named Eliza as far as I know. However, I did collect Nashville Eakin/Akin information when I was looking for her parents. I will post back here again if I find anything that may be useful to you.

Good luck with your research - the surname SMITH can be challenging! J. Johnson

I have traced W. D. Simpson's mother, Ruth, back to the 1840 Census. She was apparently already a widow at that time. Your best chance of finding her in the online indexes is to search on Ruth* with no last name and just her birth year of 1802 (with a 2 year range) but not her place of birth. She shows up as Rutha and Ruthy with a wide variety of bad guesses at her last name including Timipson.

The one child of W.D. Simpson that I know to have been born after the 1880 Census is Daniel Lee Simpson, born December 7, 1880.

Debbie:
As far as I know Aunt Nova Mae is still living. She has a daughter Diane, and a deceased son Archie.
I have never really known many of my relatives on my mother's side, but would like to. I had 3 brothers, one is now deceased.
You and I are probably first cousins once removed, as Laura was my grandmother and your great grandmother.
I am so happy to find you.
Best regards,
JoAnn

He also married in Cleveland, OH in 1938 to Lucille Deloris Foster and states his mother was Frances Steger. I would love to find living decendents who could answer all the questions.

The Tennessee State Library and Archives had an index of death certificates that spans 1908-1912 (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/history/vital/death2.htm) & 1914-1928 (http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/history/vital/tndeath.htm). They a regularly add years to the latter, so it's worth continuing to check back. At the TSLA itself, you can access death certificates up to 1958.

Also, the Shelby County Register of Deeds site had a statewide index of deaths from 1949-2005 which includes Davidson County - http://register.shelby.tn.us/

I hope this helps you find what you're looking for.

Taneya
http://www.taneya-kalonji.com/genblog

Perhaps these suggestions will help:

Findagrave.com is a wonderful website for cemetery and interment
information. This site has thousands of interments indexed for Nashville. More information is added every day by volunteers. I
have been gradually adding information about my ancestors' final resting
sites here. At this site, one can upload photos of cemetery markers, bios,
obits, etc. to create memorials for family members or document an entire
cemetery. One can also enter requests for a volunteer to take photos if
you're unable to visit sites personally. This feature made it possible for
me to obtain a photo of my grandfather's cemetery marker which is located
across the country. Sites such as this are possible due to the efforts of
volunteers who care about preserving history and honoring our dead.

http://www.davidsoncocemeterysurvey.com/
This is the site of hundreds of cemeteries indexed in Davidson County and
thousands of interments. Spring Hill Cemetery is among them. This project
represents the collective effort of over 500 volunteers and it is a valuable
resource for all Davidson County researchers.
You may need to go to the source of your information on the upcoming program and ask for the contact information of the society.

"Belleview" may be spelled "Bellevue" but even when I try that to locate a website, I can't. I did find the "Bellevue Harpeth Historical Association" website but it is outdated by several years and the contact link goes to a notice of a non-existent page.

Hi Debbie,

Any info is welcome. I have a ton of information on my Carrington ancestors back to the 1500s. They were in Barbados until around 1750, then my branch (John Carrington - Mary Pamplin) came VA initially (married there I think) then to Orange NC. His uncle George Carrington ended up in Cumberland VA. Some other siblings came there too.

I might have some information of value...let me know the name(s) of interest and location/date.

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Debbie,

I descend from Polly Ashley b1800 married John E. Carrington 1818 Orange Co NG. The YDNA of descendants of Polly's brother, Squire Stagg Ashley, match the Duke paternal line in Orange NC (the family was connected with several Dukes by marriage...one of whom believed to be their biological father or grandfather).

Elizabeth Duke (maiden name listed as Ricketts), the widow of Hardeman Duke born 1760s died 1839 Orange Co NC, moved to Nashville c1839 and continued to receive Hardeman's pension until 1848. I find some Duke households in Davidson 1840 (Nimrod, Thomas, William) although I have no clue why Elizabeth moved to Davidson Co after her husband's death nor with whom she might have been living. A son, Berry Duke, married in Maury TN 1818 to Nancy Rickets.

Hardeman was a sibling or cousin of Taylor, Tyre, Robert, and William Duke of Orange NC. They connect as cousins with Duke families in Warren NC.

Any hints on a Duke connection in Davidson with these Orange NC Duke families?

Gary

Gary,

Our research led us to the McMurry clan, and the Renfroe and then onto the Carrington group.
I will try to do a readers digest version here:
John J Carrington was married to Hannah Burke.
Hannahs sister, Hepzibah was married to Mark Renfro.
Marks brother TJ was the father to a Maggie Renfro who ended up being raised by John and Hannah Carrington.
Something happend to TJ and his wife and the rest of Maggies siblings. We have yet to discover exactly what, or the reasons Maggie came to live with the Carringtons. It might have been the extended family relationship or the Carringtons and Renfro families could have just been friends and neighbors.
Sometime after JJ Carrington and Hannah came to Perry county TN, she died, and he re-married to Mary (Gibson) McMurry. Mary brought 2 children with her, one being Travis McMurry who fathered a child with Maggie producing my great grandmother Laura.
Now isn't that interesting?? lol
You would not believe the mental acrobats we have been through in the last year to find all of this information.
Any info you might have on this line would be so appreciated.
Tks,
Debbie
