Classification: Query
I thank you again for this help. This is what I surmise about James H Stephens' parents and siblings:

The probable parents of James H. Stephens were:
Ruffin W. Stephens born 1794 in Virginia and died 1869 in Madison County, Tennessee; married Martha R. born 1794 in Virginia (and died October 5, 1869 in Madison County, Tennessee).

James H. Stephens signed the deed selling his part of the property to his brother William R. Stephens on August 31, 1870.

Ruffin and Martha’s children were:
1. James H. Stephens born about 1820 in probably Northampton County, of North Carolina (see above);
2. Joseph T. Stephens born about 1822 in probably Northampton County, of North Carolina;
3. William Ruffin Stephens born February 15, 1823 in probably Northampton County, of North Carolina and died December 24, 1895 in Pinson, Madison County, Tennessee – he married Anabell (also Annabelle or Annie Bell) Bivens born November 27, 1834 in Tennessee and died October 28, 1894 in Pinson, both buried Lester’s Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee – they married 1860 in Saltillo, Hardin County, Tennessee – they had 3 children between 1849 and 1860;
4. George W. Stephens born about 1828 in probably Northampton County, of North Carolina;
5. Martha C. Stephens born 1834 in probably Northampton County, of North Carolina and died after 1860;
6. David C. Stephens born 1835 or 1836 in probably Fayette County, of Tennessee who married Elizabeth ‘Elizie’ Nolen born July 21, 1847 – they married February 1, 1866 in Savannah, Hardin County, Tennessee - they had 7 children between 1866 and 1878;

(This leaves Elisha S Stevens not regarded, by me anyway, as a possible son) at this time.

1820 Northampton County, North Carolina Census: Ruffin Stevens

1830 Northampton County, North Carolina Census: Ruffin Stevens

Ruffin and family moved from Northampton County, North Carolina to Fayette County, Tennessee in about 1835.

1840 Fayette County, Tennessee Census: R W Stephens

1850 District 9, Fayette County, Tennessee Census: Ruffin W. Stephens, age 57, born about 1793 in VA; Martha R, age 54, born about 1796 in VA; Joseph T, age 28, born about 1822 in NC; Wm R, age 26, born about 1824 in NC; George W, age 22, born about 1828 in NC; Martha C, age 18, born about 1832 in NC; David C, age 15, born about 1835 in TN;
Many more Stephens in other districts (8 & 13)

1860 13 Civil District, Saltillo, Hardin County, Tennessee Census: Ruffin W. Stephens, age 66, farmer, 600, 400, born Virginia; Martha R, age 66, born Virginia; Martha C., age 26, born North Carolina; David C., age 24, farmer, born Tennessee

Next door were found:
1860 13 Civil District, Saltillo, Hardin County, Tennessee Census: William R. Stephens, age 34, farmer, 500, 2000, born North Carolina; Ann B., age 24, born Tennessee; 2 daughters born Tennessee

1880 District 1, Madison County, Tennessee Census: William Stephens, age 58, farming, born North Carolina, parents born Virginia; Anna B., age 44 born Tennessee, mother born Alabama; 4 “other” Stephens children, ages 15, 13, 10 and 6 – all born Tennessee, father born North Carolina, mother born Tennessee.

1880 District 13, Hardin County, Tennessee Census: David C. Stephens, age 45, farmer, born Tennessee, parents born Virginia; Liza, age 43, born Tennessee, parents born Tennessee; their 5 children, ages 14-2 born Tennessee.

This leaves me with many questions:

Are his parents buried buried Lester’s Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee with son William? Probably, but the records onlilne indicate it would be hard to prove.

What happened to their children, Joseph T Stephens, George W Stephens, and Martha C Stephens?

Can someone please get the details on the following Censuses:
1820 Northampton County, North Carolina Census: Ruffin Stevens

1830 Northampton County, North Carolina Census: Ruffin Stevens

1840 Fayette County, Tennessee Census: R W Stephens

It might prove James is his son.

I wonder if they had other children than the ones I could find listed above?

What town is District 9, Fayette County, Tennessee?

What town is District 1, Madison County, Tennessee?

Any help is appreciated,
