Re: Union soldiers along Yellow Creek during the Civil War: One story passed down from those days was regarding the store at Omega (east side of Yellow Creek a few hundred feet south of Bear Creek, torn down in the 1930's). It was operated by J. W and M.F. Shelton before and during the war, and after the war by James Skelton, my Great Grandfathe, who married their neice Lenora Shelton, daughter of William M. Shelton.. The Union soldiers would come around and requisition/appropriate/steal horses. The obvious place for them to look was in the barn, so when there was word of the approach of a Union patrol the horses would be hidden under the store, which was way up off the ground. Apparently someone was able to keep the horses quiet and everyone would be nonchalant while the soldiers wandered through the store buying what they wanted, knowing the horses were hidden below.
