I need help in identifying and putting together the Allen families in Fayette co TN for the 1840-1860 time period. Some heads of household and families moved to Drew co AR about this time from here. I counted at least 14 HH on the 1850 census and at least 16 HH on the 1840 census. Please help me separate these into families if you can. Thanks Louise

If so, he was like many young men who headed to California in hopes of making some money.

Charles is listed with three other black men including a Robert Perkins who was a blacksmith.

I am looking for death or cemetery records for George M. Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Plummer Thompson. Their 1880 census shows they lived in District 11, Fayette County. She died in 1881, and he in 1882. George was born in the District of Columbia abt 1829, and Mary was born in TN, probably Fayette County, in 1848. They were married on Sept 3, 1871 in Fayette County. Thanks.....

William Stevens and Zilphia Cogdell Stevens in Dist. 8, Fayette co.

William Stevens (Stephens) brought his wife and family to Fayette county, TN from NC in the early 1830s. They resided in District 8 for the remainder of their lives, William dying there about 1860 and his wife, referred to as “Silvy” in his will, gone before 1870.

Their son, John Haywood Stevens, born in NC about 1810, died about 1843 in Fayette county. He left a wife, Frances McCulley, and six children…Lewis Haywood, Jesse, Harriet, William David, John, and Thursday Rebecca.

Their younger son, Lewis Stevens, married his brother’s widow on 24 Jan 1844. He died about 1860 in Fayette county, TN. Frances, called Fannie or Fanny, died in 1880 of consumption. She and the children had remained in District 8 of Fayette county.

The children of Lewis and Fannie Stevens were Eliza, James, Nancy, Zilpha, Robert and Julius.

Any additional information on this family would be greatly appreciated. I’m especially hoping to find where William, Zilphia and their children were born/resided in North Carolina before settling in Tennessee and where they are buried in Tennessee.

Thank you for any clues you can provide.

Kathy Hudson
Kailua, Hawaii
I'll try and give you the Readers Digest version...From what I can gather or deduce, three Blaydes brothers came to Tennessee around the 1840's from Spring Grove Virginia in Spotsylvania County. Their father was John Coleman Blaydes and his father was William Blaydes. The three set up a homestead and then at some point it appears two of the brothers went on their way. One up into Kentucky and another into Texas. John Key Blaydes stayed in Tennessee and had a son John D. Blaydes. He was one of about eight children with two other brothers, Samuel Hawes Blaydes and James Elliot Blaydes. John raised a family after marrying Rebecca Garrison in March of 1866. They had five children, four boys (Vaughnie, Collie, Dewitt and Leeroy) and one girl (Rosa). Vaughnie eventually moved to Memphis and had my father, Elmer Curtis Blaydes, the youngest of nine children. Both John and Rebecca are buried in Oakland, Tn. in the Oakland Cemetery behind Oakland Baptist Church. I don't have a lot of history or any photos or articles from that time. I actually have been to the Somerville Library to do some research, but time and help was difficult to get anything done. I currently live in Coolidge, AZ. and teach at the local high school. I hope to get back home at some point and find the grave sites and document what I can of the Blaydes of the Hickory Withe area. The hard part is finding documentation. Even the census get things wrong and trying to find the correct names and spelling can be a challenge. Hopefully, you can fill in some holes or make some corrections. Look forward to hearing from you again. My direct email is blaydes@aol.com.
