Book about real people but made fictional names in Fentress Co.

Hi,

I need some help about a book I read about a while back. I can't remember the author or name, but someone wrote a book about real people in Fentress County, and their stories, but changed their names slightly because it's actually a fiction book.
I know that it involved mysteries and people that lived around the Jamestown, Pall Mall area, and wolf river.
My grandma, Essie SHARP Jones, had told me about some of the same stories, she heard about them when she was a child in the 1920's, she lived on Delk Creek.
Does anyone know about this book? Help is much appreciated.
See my Sharp website at http://www.geocities.com/shalalagirl_2000/Sharp.html
Jesse (Delk) Adkins in what is now La Follette Tennessee

I am researching the 1862 actions pertaining to Cumberland Gap. This past week I took a trip to Tennessee to see some of the locations I'm reading about. In LaFollette I stopped by the De Lap Cemetery in front of a gap called "Roger's Gap". I found a whole bunch of 58th North Carolina troops buried up there (I believe that is from the later fight in 1863) and one very interesting headstone for "Jesse (Delk) Adkins" 1825-1863 with the added inscription "Civilian POW of Confederate Army". Here's a link to the picture on my Picasa account:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/M9NBtT_QYl_-TGx3Kuw2Zg

does anyone know any more about this guy? I know East Tennessee was a serious Unionist stronghold and sometimes these Unionist would get a bit rowdy and take to burning bridges and whatnot. Mr. Adkins would've been an older gentleman at the time of the war so I'm not sure he would be burning any bridges.

I'd love to hear the rest of the story if anyone has it.
Clear Creek Community in 1824, anyone have information?

I was recently doing some reading in Fentress County history book and came across a reference to a family that moved from the Clear Creek Community to Nobusiness. (The Young family that moved to Nobusiness and then a tornado came and they moved back to "Clear Creek Community").

The only Young I can find in this area according to deeds is Burdine Young on Station Camp Creek in 1824 and he doesnt show up in 1825 the year after the Tornado. His brother Andrew(I believe) does show up in 1825 on Station Camp Creek.

I am also hoping to follow Burdine back from Nobusiness/Station Camp to Clear Creek Community, so if anyone has information about who the Young is, or any Young family in Clear Creek please let me know.

Does anyone have any information about this place Clear Creek Community?
Where was it near?
I found "Clear Creek" on a map in Morgan county. Has it mostly been associated with Morgan Co. and not another TN county in early 1820's?
Etc...

Any information on it would be extremely helpful as I am trying to get general knowledge on where it is other than on a map I have that says Clear Creek is near Wartburg but no information on early settlements etc. (I dont believe they were referring to Wartburg as the Clear Creek Community in early 1820's).

Thanks

Rob

Evans in Fentress Co.

My Evans ancestor in Fentress Co. was Jeremiah Odel Evans, born in 1817. In 1839 he married Ann (or Anna) Davidson, daughter of Joseph Davidson and Mary Rule. They moved to Washington co., Arkansas before 1850. In 1870 they migrated to Walla Walla Co. Washington Territory where he died in 1889 and she in 1892.

In the late 1940s my great-aunt, their granddaughter, wrote me of the family history. She said his name was not originally Evans, but McHenry. Her first cousins had exactly the same tradition, but I have never found proof.

I am aware of a man named Jeremiah Odel in Sumner County early in the 19th century, but I do not know why he was named for him (if that is the case).

Is this familiar to anyone? Happy to exchange information.

Robert Biggs

Banner Springs 1820's Adkins/Ferrell

Greetings from Cincinnati, Ohio. My family of Caswell C. Ferrell (Feril,Teril, Terrell, Wilson all names I find him or his family listed as)is reportedly from Banner Springs, TN. Caswell married Mary "Polly" Adkins about 1825, according to her civil war pension application, by JP Lavender in Morgan Co.,TN. I cannot find Caswell and Polly listed in the Fentress or Morgan Co.,TN 1830 census. I find him listed in the 1840 Pulaski Co.,Ky census as Caswell Teril with 2 children under 5. I next find him listed as Caswell Wilson in Campbell CO.,TN in 1850 followed by 1860 as Caswell Ferrell. In 1870 he is back in Pulaski CO.,Ky where he disapeared in 1876, reported year of death on the civil war application, while on a hunting trip with his dogs. Caswell was in the KY 7th Union as a volunteer. HAs anyone come across this Adkins or Ferrell families in your research of Fentress and Morgan Co.,TN? Will be glad to share the family info I have collected. You can reach me at bgriffis@isoc.net.
Thanks
Bruce

I am searching for the children of Timothy CARPENTER, b. 1796 in MA, and Alsie/Alsey DALE Carpenter, b. 1797. Timothy was the oldest son of Timothy Carpenter and Hannah Brown Carpenter who settled in Tennessee.
Timothy (Jr) and Alsie moved to Texas in 1836/1837 (Dallas and Wise Co.). He went to the Gold Rush in 1849! There were a number of children from this marriage. Two known children are Timothy E. Carpenter, Alsie Carpenter Wilson and Susan O. Carpenter McCarroll.

Wilder TN 1924 Coal MIners' Strike

I am interested in the coal mine strike (UMWA District 19) that occurred in Wilder, TN from 15 Feb-1 Apr 1924. The Fentress Coal and Coke Co. filed an injunction against the striking miners with the Federal District Court of Northeastern TN in Cookeville on 24 May 1924 to stop them from assembling, congregating, or loitering on company property even though most of the men had gone back to work 1 Apr, according to a book I have.

My grandfather, Eston Douglas "Doug" Miller, (and perhaps my great-grandfather, Monroe "Mun" Scarbrough) participated in this strike. Douglas left Wilder soon after, moving his family to KY. Our family tradition about this strike is most interesting, and I am anxious to know more.

Any information or sources you can provide would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Anna
Wm Adkins (b abt 1827) s/o Jesse & Sarah Adkins?

William Adkins was born about 1827 and married Nancy Delk. Their son Wyatt (b abt 1848) was my ancestor. William, Nancy and children appear in the 1860 Fentress Co., TN census. I have photocopies of an article from a book called HISTORY OF FENTRESS COUNTY TENNESSEE. The article says that my William is believed to be a son of Jesse and Sarah Adkins. The author of the article was Virginia C. Zeboski. This article also says that William and Nancy were "living in Knox Co. in 1850 and Fentress Co. in 1850". As mentioned above, I have found the family to be in Fentress Co. in 1860 but I simply cannot find them anywhere at all in 1850 - including Knox Co. Is anyone familiar with this family? I'd like to learn more about the evidence indicating William was the son of Jesse and Sarah. And I would like to know how it was determined that William and Nancy were living in Knox Co. in 1850.

I am trying to find information on Jesse and Elizabeth Crabtree, who were listed in Scott County in the 1850 census. Their ages are listed as 50 and 48 at that time.

My GGGgrandparents, Robert and Margarett J. Smith (ages 70?? and 28) and a Nancy Smith (age 64), as well as some children are listed in as living in the household with them.

Jesse, Robert, and Nancy are all listed as having come from VA.

I believe these people were all related, but I do not know just how. I am hoping there are some descendants in Fentress Co. who may have information on them. I feel if I can learn the connections between these people that I can knock down a brick wall that has me stumped.

Thanks in advance for any information.

The above named was born in Fentress County, Tennessee in 1868 and died in Casey County, Kentucky in 1948. He first appeared in the 1870 Census as a child of Susan Scott, head of the house. He is listed as a sibling of Zimrod, Alexander, and Sarah. I don't remember the others. He is usually listed in family trees as a child of Napoleon B. Scott (Sr.) but doen't appear on any census with said NBS. So I would go against the tide and say that he is not the senior NBS's son. So whose son is he. His father appears to have died sometime between his conception and 1870 or may be he left the family.
Please help
Thank you

Jackson Moles born abt 1831 TN
census shows: in Fentress,TN 1850 [w/parents]
Clinton,KY 1860
Wolf Creek,Russell Co,KY 1870
can't find him on the 1880
Jackson Moles was married to Permilia Jane Walker.Permilia has shown up on birth records of her children as Jane Walker.I have one her daughter's death certificate & her name is shown as Amelia Walker.
Jackson & Permilia's children were:
Nancy E 1854, Sarah Ann 1856, William Vann 1857, James 1860 & John born 1851/ died 1855

3.Sarah Ann Moles born May 1856 Clinton Co,KY
lived in Russell Co,Ky & died in Shelby Co,Indiana on June 16,1934.She married John Stephens on Feb.4,1874 in Russell Co,KY.
Sarah Moles & John Stephens' children were:
Ulyssus 1874,Lenora 1876, Daitha 1878,Savannah 1883,Elmer 1885, Ethel 1889,Pearly 1891,Elza 1896,Etherd 1895, Edgar 1897,Carrie & Estell .

4. Elmer Stephens was my great grandfather.

I have talked [on-line]with a granddaughter of Permilia Jane Walker [married Moles].She told me that Permilia is buried just outside of a cemetery between Russell Springs & Jamestown,KY.Her grave is only marked by a pile of stones. She told me that Permilia was not permitted to be buried inside the cemetery because she was "a full blooded Indian".

Another thing,I noticed something that I am curious about on the 1860 Clinton,KY census. In the household of Jackson & Permilia J.Moles there is an Elizabeth Walker listed.Elizabeth is 33 yrs old & Permilia is 29 yrs.Could Elizabeth be Permilia's sister?

As I said,I am looking for anything on my family.
Cathy

I have found Harvey Guinn on the 1880 census in Roane County, TN. It says he is 65, a fisherman, born in TN. His wife is Sarah, age 55, born in TN. They have a daughter, Mary, age 27, born in TN. This fits with Harvey Guinn son of Jane and John Guinn. This would make him born 1815, between John Rose and Andrew Bailey. There is a short microfilm at the Tennessee State Archives in Nashville, on it it shows Grantees Sarah and Harvey Gwinn heirs of Conrad Pile Bk. F pg. 84, Grantor William Pile Sr.

Hi Sally: I do not have much on the Watsons. It appears that Giles (Jiles) Watson came to Fentress County between 1870 and 1880 as he first appears in the census in 1880.

!1880 Fentress Co, TN census Jiles Watson 35 KY 1844-1845 m Dist 5 #158.
Sally (Watson) Bashaw: snbashaw@earthlink.net -- Names of records obscure in 1880 census are Na (Nancy) and B (Becky). Silas Ab Watson is my grandfather and his siblings are Becky or Rebecca, Nancy, Isabell and Lewis. Lewis would have been out of the home at the time of the 1880 census. The parents were Rachell (Winchester) and Giles Watson.

1880
Jiles Watson	35 KY	1844-1845
Rachell Watson	35 KY	1844-1845
Isabell Watson	12 TN	1867-1868
Nancy Watson	? TN	1868-1873 Nancy or Naomi
Becky Watson	6 TN	1873-1874
Ab Watson	2 TN	1877-1878

You should be able to find Giles Watson as a child in the 1850 and possibly 1860 censuses in Kentucky. By 1870 he was some where in Tennessee and married, so you should be able to find him on the 1870 census index for TN. Good luck and love, Bruce
My father-in-law, (Lonnie) Beckam BERTRAM, married Alma Lou BROWN in Fentress Co., TN on 12 December 1904, and they reared a family of five there in the Allardt community. Alma Lou was the daughter of the preacher, George Washington BROWN, and Martha Ellot STINSON. Beckam BERTRAM was born and reared in Wayne Co., KY, the son of Porter Harrison BERTRAM and Rosa Sennabelle DeROSSETT. He was related to all the various branches of the BERTRAM, BUTRAM, etc., family in Fentress Co., TN, but he did not know it. I have researched most of them and can tie them in to early ancestors in NC, VA, KY, and TN. Would enjoy exchanging information with all branches.

Gypsy Colony? in Early Overton/Fentress Co. TN Boswell, Madewell et.al.?

This message will be posted to several lists, so I apologize if you receive this message more than once. On the Boswell list, there has been some discussion of Boswell gypsy origins. In Albert R. Hogue's History of Fentress Co. TN 1916, the ancestor of the Madewell's was from Egypt, arriving in 1795. Perhaps this was a polite way of calling him a gypsy. As I understand the origin of gypsy is Egytian. Supposedly, gypsy's claimed they were from Egypt. Both of these families were very early settlers in what is today Fentress Co. TN. What I would like to know is 1. Does anyone know of any oral or written history about a group of gypsy's settling in this part of Tennessee? 2. Does the Boswell or Madewell group have a Surname DNA study set up? 3. If so, does the haleogroup have a concentration is what is today Iraq/Iran? the supposed origin of gypsys.

I'm looking for the children of Thomas Groom b 1797 NC. He is the son of Nelly & John Groom. He and his family are living next to Nelly on the 1830 census in Fentress Co. He & his wife are listed. He has 4 children: 1 male b 1820-1825, 1 male b 1825-1830, 1 female b 1820-1825, & 1 female b 1825-1830. Does anyone know who his wife is or anything about his children? I can't find him on the 1840 census but find him in Bedford Co. in the 1850 census with a much younger wife.
