Looking for information to make a conclusion regarding the following:

According to the "History of the Fourth Tennessee Cavalry U.S.A. War of the Rebellion 1861-65" by Alexader Eckel of Company C:

Company M at page 136, lists THOS. J. MARSHALL, age 18, enl. May 15, '64, detailed teamster Nov. 2, '64.

There is no mention of his discharge at the close of war, capture or death. At page 143 the book gives a number of 1264 as total enlistments and 335 as killed, wounded, captured, died during war, leaving a number of 929 men. It states that 734 men mustered out at close of war, which leaves 195 either in the calvary or unaccounted for. Did our Thomas J. Marshall remain in the calvary and go to serve somewhere after the war? Why doesn't he show up in the 1870 census?

DOCUMENTS:
According to documents received from the NATIONAL ARCHIVES, Thomas J. Marshall, age 18, born Greene Co., TN. enlisted May 15, 1864 at Knoxville, TN. He appears on the Co. Muster-out Roll dated July 12, 1865 Nashville, TN. He was last paid through Aug 31, 1864. His clothing account was never settled.

In 1880, this Thomas stated that his age was 32 making his birthdate 1847-1848. In 1900, he listed his birthdate as Nov. 1843. In his pension record, he gave his birthdate as Nov. 1842. Don't know if the one in Kansas in 1870 is the same one who settled in Haywood County; or that either of these men is Thomas J. Marshall, the son of Andrew J. Marshall who disappeared between 1860 and 1870 census. I do know that the T.C. Marshall in 1880 is the same as Thomas Jefferson Marshall who filed a pension for service in the civil war because he listed his wife and children and place of residence in the pension file.

Note that he gave his age as 18 when he enlisted in 1864, making his birthdate 1846-1847.

Any help regarding this Thomas J(efferson) Marshall is greatly appreciated.
