I'm so grateful for this! It seems Ephraim was the same age as my great grandfather roughly--Arthur Louis Kennedy born 1888 or 1889. I DO know now for a fact he was born in Cedar Grove, Henderson, TN so this does place him in the Scott's Hill area....I was kind of going off someone else's information with what I have stated before other than I did have in hand information that said Arthur's brother's mom's last name was Duck.

I'm not even completely sure Arthur or his siblings knew their mom's name..she was clearly deceased by 1900 and the kids were still very young. That's when they went from TN to OK and it's part of why your John W.S. Kennedy interested me--seemed to take the same route.

Probably related somewhere. I'll keep trying when I can (I've been having serious health issues and I have 2 young kids who have health problems as well). Thank you for what you shared with me. I love the photographs---even if nothing comes of it I have a sense of the area where my great grandfather was born and that is something!

Re: Looking for descendants of Anthony Smith on 1830 census Henderson Co,TN

I have to wonder if your ancestor and mine may be linked. If so, I can connect you with the descendants. My ancestor, John Henderson Hinton Smith, lived his later years in Mifflin (Henderson, later renamed Chester County), TN. He was born in 1833. All of the census records indicate that he was born in North Carolina. He married Aramantha "Ann" Collins in Marshall County, MS on 29 Oct 1849. They were still in Marshall County, MS in 1850 and 1860. They then moved to Miffin, TN when they lived the remainder of their lives. She died of yellow fever in January of 1878. He died in 1889. She is buried in Old Mifflin Cemetery. Findagrave has him buried there as well.

I have exactly the opposite problem of yours. I know the descendants, but none of the ancestors for John Henderson Smith or Aramantha Collins. My tree literally stops with their family. A representative from Chester County, TN courthouse told me that their courthouse have burned several times through the years. She did not give me much home of finding their records.

I hope to hear from you. Perhaps we can help each other.
Anthony was a brother of my ancestor and departed Burke County, NC after the 1810 census and before the 1820 census.
If your ancestor was born in NC in 1833, he is not a son of Anthony Smith living in Lexington, Henderson County, TN
in and after 1828. Anthony was 63 years old in 1833 and may have married a second wife young enough to have borne a son in 1833 in Henderson County, TN.

I live in West Tennessee, in Dyersburg. I have been to Scottshill many times. I enjoy it so much that I don't want to leave. my grandmother Ida mai Austin grew up in Doe Creek and got married in the little school house, in 1907. if you check my tree, you see that I now have Jeptha's DC namimg parents. I have the others also. Martha Duck was Silas's wife. I am tracing her to Jourdan Woodward ,a DAR Patriot.

I can find no proof that Jeremiah is Richard's son or that Silas is Jeremiah's son.

My email is debihart@bellsouth.net.
Hello I am as well related to this line of Austins, thru the Jeremiah and Silas Austins thru the Jeptha Andrew Austin. I have been trying to find the way Silas Austin died with no results. Makes me think he was killed at Shiloh? I do know he was the first husband of Martha Duck right? She remaried to Henry Austin and that is why the Austins kept going, but like you can not find Silas death date and where he is burried. In reading the Scotts Hill Tn book it speaks of many Austins who were killed in the Civil War. First one on the list is a son of Jeremiah Austin. Hope you have good luck and where do you live? I live in Middle tennessee. Thanks

This schoolhouse stood in Henderson County, in what is now the Natchez Trace State Park, on Brown's Creek Lake Road at the enterance to George Trail. It was built in the 1920's on the site of the Altom Family Cemetery, which had been abandoned for many decades. It is not known how long the school stood or when it was destroyed, but it could have been around the time the park was built in the 1940's. In 1991, the park service restored the Altom Cemetery on the site. There are no photos of the school or any classes online, or a list of students there. A man named Cova Lewis or his wife Donna may have been the teacher there at one time. If any information is avaliable, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for George W. Sargeant who died in July , 1900, in Luray TN. He is listed on the 1900 TN census age 52 with wife Aida age 22 and daughter LaLa age 3 yrs. I would like to know where he is buried. He was a Union Civil War vet and survivor of Andersonville Prison. He abandoned his wife and children in Iowa and went to TN, and I guess "married" again. The wife in IA was never divorced. I cannot find a listing for a military government headstone, and the war dept. does not seem to have a cemetery listed, just that he is buried in Luray. I don't see where anyone applied for widow's pension, but I know his wife in IA did not receive it. Aida and daughter are on the 1910 TN census, where she is listed as married to Ankinah Jones (she is 32, he is 62) LaLa is still listed as Sargeant. I would appreciate any leads. Thank you.

They had children: Thomas b. in England?, Elim? b. KY, Michael C. b. 1858 KY, and a daughter. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have put finding Michael Calvin's Ireland roots on my BUCKET LIST. Time is of the essence. Thanks Sandy J

My fathers' sister married a Maness and were both from the Henderson/Lexington area. They are both now deceased. His name was Frank Maness as was his grandson who is also deceased. I will have to check my records to see if I show any other notes for his family. If you think this might be a link, which sounds like it with Frank seeming to be a common name, I can check with their surviving son to see what he knows about that side of the family if I don't find anything in my tree records. The Cherokee thing sounds likely too as my uncle had quite high cheekbones and darker skin. I have always been told that we have Cherokee ancestors so it is possible the Maness family does too. Our family came from North Carolina and there were records of Manesses in that same area. As families were known to move together, they may be part of the same family. I was told that ancestors married into the Cherokee tribe when they came through that area on the way to Tennessee.

Hi Michelle,

Yes, thank you - I had found the death certificate on Ancestry. There is a family in Red River county, TX that appears on the 1850 and 1860 census ... parents AJ and Elizabeth Austin (AJ dies between 1850 and 1860). They have, among other children, a son George, born 1843 in TN. I *think* that may be this George, but am trying to find more conclusive proof. The name Austin is common enough that I really want something more definitive.

Another son in that family is William (b. abt 1847) who I think may be my husband's g-g-grandfather. William didn't die until 1929, so if this George is our William's brother, with any luck, William would be mentioned in George's 1926 obit. That's my hope anyhow. :-)

(just got William's death cert - unfortunately, his parents' names are not given there) William lived the bulk of his adult life in the counties surrounding Red River county, so this family is the most likely candidate, but again, I've got no solid proof.

I've traced 2 other siblings from the Red River family, both of whom died before 1880, so there's very little hope of vital records for either of them. The other siblings seem to have fallen off the face of the earth.

Thanks to all of you for your help and interest! I'll take any and all suggestions!

Gretchen

I don't really have any hope of finding the obituaries themselves online, but was searching online just to find out what newspapers were in the area during that timeframe (and who might have old copies).

I will definitely call some of the libraries and see what I can find out there.
You might have problems finding some online. I don't think that area is on Genealogy Bank. I would call or email the various libraries in that general area. They are going to have some of the older editions. I'm not from there so I'm not sure which towns have libraries, but, possiblities might be Milledgeville, Sardis, Scots Hill, Lexington, and Henderson in Chester Co. Go online and check those communities. I have obtained obits from the libraries in both Lexington and Henderson by email. They have been very nice and helpful. I didn't see your name listed in Brenda Fidler's bk of obituaries of the Henderson Co. area. Perhaps another relative is listed there that would give you clues.

There is a small family cemetery I am looking for that has not hit the billion websites.

I tried to order the book via interlibrary loan so I could search District 13. Perhaps there are a ton of White's in the same cemetery, that is what I am searching for. Perhaps someone can please find them for me.
What are there names? I know sometimes I'm better able to find the person than I am at getting hung up on the districts and mapped areas which are always changing. I have a lot of families connected in the general area of Sardis and Saltillo that I might have an idea what direction to look.

Roger
