The Hammach/Hammick family

I am looking for any information of Mahala Jane Hammick, sometimes spelled Hammach. She is Native American and may have had the name Jofa Crowfoot prior to marrying Shadrick I. Bales (Quaker) in Jefferson County TN on 31 May 1845. Also Shadrick's mom is Elizabeth Hamlet and reportedly 3/4 Cherokee. Mahala/Jofa is reportedly 100% Cherokee. All of them ended up in Ray County, Missouri. If you go to find a grave you can see a picture of Mahala/Jofa memorial #18470995. There is also a picture of Elizabeth on my tree, feel free to look at it. Thanks, Sandy

I am researching my great-great grandfather James Oliver Patton. He was born in 1877 and died in 1949 and was married to Julia Ann Reese. But I can find nothing on his parents Samuel Patton and Mary E. Rines. There is a family rumour that his father was actually a Jim or James Barbee. Any information, help or direction would be greatly appreciated as I do not know where to look for information.

Jacob Ailey m1:Susannah Bare m2: Rachel Russell (not RURSUE ). J & R's estate admin dates here. Rachel w/of Jos. Burchfiel.
Long ago someone found a record that apparently said Harriett Russell and they transcribed the name as Russue (repeat RUSSUE). Imagine that the "e" in Russell didn't have much of a loop, and neither did the first "l" that was only as tall as an "e". They looked like two short sticks--therefore a "u". If the second "l" was short like the first one but had more of a loop, it was transcribed as an "e'. If someone didn't know Jefferson County Russell's that's understandable. At least they didn't transcribed it as Ruffell this time.

Then that person or someone named lcmarrott521941 "contributed" it as RUSSUE to LDS and it was put into the old infamous (now defunct but in the-errors-will-live-forever mode) IGI file.

(You probably have to register at the new LDS website to see the index of this entry and the images of the record book for their estate administration below)
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/igi/results#c... 2)

THEN someone copied it from the IGI file to put it into their family tree, but they copied the name wrong and it became RURSUE.

The oldest tree on WorldConnect with RURSUE is 2003. There is no Russue on WC.

As of March 2010 there were 23 trees that had her as RURSUE. Today (22 Feb 2013) through the magic of click-and-merge and green leaf hints telling people to copy other mistake-ridden trees there are 75. A few trees have her duplicated two to four times but you get the idea. There are 10 Private trees.

There is ONE Private Tree that has her as RUSSUE. No Public.

Over half the trees have her marrying Jacob Ailey in 1827. She married him in April 1840. She didn't even marry her first husband, Joseph Burchfiel until 1829. All marriage records on Ancestry. She was having Burchfiel children in the 1830s. (Rachel Jane and Anna are living with Robert Burchfiel (I think their way older half-brother) in the 1850 census).

No tree lists any documentation of when Jacob Ailey's first wife, Susanna Bare/Bear died, but I think Rachel isn't the mother of any Ailey children born before 1840. If someone can prove Susanna/h Bear died in 1825 then we need to find ANOTHER wife for all those other kids born between 1825 and 1840.

Almost all the trees have someone being born, married or dying in Jefferson CITY in the 1800s. Nope. Jefferson City wasn't renamed from Mossy Creek until 1901 and none of these old Ailey, Burchfiel or most other families lived north of Dandridge back then. A bunch of them lived on or south of the French Broad River which is nowhere near present-day Jefferson City.

Almost all those trees have both Rachel Russell and Jacob Ailey dying in 1860. I have no idea why (except that they all copied from someone else).

RACHEL RUSSELL
The Administrators of her estate were appointed 7 April 1870.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-20159-68233-58...

JACOB AILEY
The Administrators of his estate were appointed 7 January 1856.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-20159-73476-87...

And then there are the trees that have Jacob dying in 1860 yet have him on the 1862 IRS tax assessment AND in 1910 in Oklahoma.

So I need help finding where the death date for Susanna/h Bear of 1825 came from . . . .

Where the marriage date of Rachel Rursue to Jacob Ailey of 1827 came from . . . .

Thanks.

Shirley

From what I have gathered. He was married to Susannah Bear and she died and then he married Rachel... thats what I have gathered. If Rachel was in fact an Indian as claimed, it may be hard to find anything regarding her. She is who I am curious about bc she was my 4th great grandmother. I have read that back then when white men married indian women, they did not list themselves as indian. Being indian then was not considered "good" or whatever. This is just what I have researched. But I am at a road block there as well. I am looking for documents about Rachel.

I am just finishing up my year-plus-long project of documenting the descendants of John "Hugh" Kirkpatrick. This is one of 9 volumes I plan to compile on the descendants of Hugh Kirkpatrick (b ca 1695 - d 1768 PA). (I have already completed the volume of Hannah Kirkpatrick Barclay). I am just waiting on 22 marriage documents from Jefferson Co, TN and 3 CDs from the National Archives.

Many descendants settled in Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Jefferson, Knox and Washington Counties in E. TN

This volume is on 2 DVDs (book is in PDF format)and it has 3783 pages, 14392 individuals, 5.76 gigabytes of documents or 12111 individual documents on 2 DVDs (too much to put it all on one DVD). The book also contains Y-DNA data on this Kirkpatrick line.

Anyone interested in acquiring a copy of these 2 DVDs needs to contact me directly at tcaulleysgenmail[at]yahoo[dot]com and I'll put you on a "wait list."

Tom Caulley

I know nothing about Webb's famous or infamous. This cought my eye because my Uncles family finder is pulling up some possible Webb ties.

But-- I do own the Index to Early Tennessee tax list by Sistler, printed 1977

Jesse Webb was on the Tax List Jefferson Co 1800 and 1822.
And there was also a Thomas Webb on it in 1822.

One thing that you might consider also, and again, I know nothing about Jefferson Co. is that it is possible that the county was reformated at some time and that the county lines have changed. Tn Gen Web for Jefferson could probably give you any county boundry changes.

Good luck

Joyce

He does not belong to the infamous Jesse or John Webb. He married in Jefferson County in 1837, but find no records of him again until the 1860 census. Cannot be found in the 1850 census. Therefore I need other types of records such as tax list or deeds. Thanks for any assistance.

I know this post is 12 years old but this might find a newbie.

The W. Newman from NC on the 1850 in Jefferson (with Malinda and Joseph B) is Wade H. Newman. Malinda AILEY is his wife (married in 1842) and they are there through the 1880 census (that year listed as W H 75, and M 57).
I believe that Obadiah and my GG Grandfather Johnathon S.Ward were brothers, there is also a strong presumption that James G. Ward was also a brother. His wife was Nancy McKinney.

Johnathan married Elizabeth S. Patton. There were many marriages between the families of Moyers, Blackburn, Patton, McFarland, and Ward. I am speculating, and trying to find documentation, but these relationships lead me to think that Rachel McFarland of Virginia was their mother. She died while in her 30's I think. My guess is that the Jane that we see may have been his second wife.

Any Luck finding out if John is Obediah's father I found John and Jane Ward living in Jefferson co. TN on 1950 Census not far from Obediah and his wife Nancy Ward then on the 1860 census Jane Ward is next door age 79 so thinking John is Obediah Ward Father and Jane is his mother. Just wanting to prove it with some records.
1. George W. RUSSELL (the one born in Georgia in 1798 ** who DID * NOT DIE IN 1907 **) married Polly NEWMAN Mar 1818 in Jefferson. (Never seen on a census.)

2. Anny EDMONDS married John CHAMBERS Mar 1825 in Jefferson.

3. Amy (It might look like Anny?) CHAMBERS has a Jefferson marriage license to marry George W. RUSSELL in Nov. 1849.

In the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses in Sevier, George Russell and Ania/Amey/Anna have a bunch of Russell and Chambers kids (though listed as Russell kids in 1850 which is the ONLY census someone seems to have ever looked at because it's the version copied into the copied trees).

Is there any documentation that anyone has that Anny Edmonds (the widow Chambers) is not the SECOND wife since Polly is not seen on any census?

My current worksheet for George Russell's family combo is at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op... .

Thanks.
