Interested in Julius Snyder (often spelled Snider). 1850 U.S. census has him living in District 10, Macon county, born in Virginia circa 1815. Believe his wife was named Mahala Jane Hargis, same census has her born circa 1823, also in Virginia, though 1860 U.S. census has her born in Tennessee (along with all their children). Seems to die in the 1860's, as he is not present with his wife in the 1870 U.S. census.

William Hargis Jennie Jacobs

********************************************************************************************************************************************************
Rev. Calvin Gregory tells us several times that the parents of William Hargis, that married Hannah Howell is William Hargis and his wife Jennie Jacobs. And years later our William Hargis, great grand children, all state that the parents of Our William Hargis was, William Hargis and Jennie Jacobs, all 45 that applied for tribal rights. The number 45 of them, for me is too much to dismiss.

My question is why and what proof creates a link to a Richard Hargis and Jane/Jean Unknown , who died in 1799 in North Carolina to Our William Hargis b. 1769 of Macon and Smith Co. Tn?

No sources are given within any of the books, that contain this information

It is my belief that you have read the article of Randy East, in the Macon Co, Families book. While this should be the best source, people assume because it is published by a Historical Society, it has to be true. This is false, you have to prove nothing to them, their job is just to collect information.
Macon County, Tennessee History and Families (pub. 2001)

The biggest problem in genealogy, is with authors who write books, with questionable material, and the sad part is that other so called historians and genealogist, researchers all, borrow information from badly researched books and pass it on as fact. Skipping the whole "Reseach thing". Especially if the past writer has a title to go with his name, Like Dr. Prof., State Rep., Historian.

Since the book by Dr. Sarah Hargis "Genealogy of Richard Hargis" published 1980 was available and gives this same information I believe this is where Mr. East , got his source. Because it also had Macon Co. families.

The only reason this Richard Hargis is attached to our
William Hargis b. 1769, is because Richard Hargis (noted in online will) had a son named Dennis. and a son William. (The wrong William has been assumed)

This next information may be found in Cal's Column, there are also two letters sent to Rev. Cal from a Nellie Hull in 1954,

First the story she relates about Whiteside Hargis and his brother with Daniel Boone, this event did happen, However, No Hargis is mention in any historical account. ( why believe anything else ? )

http://vagenweb.org/lee/HSpubl11.htm
or read THE VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY
http://vagenweb.org/lee/HSpubl11.htm
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~drakerobin...
FOOTNOTES:
(1) Summer, Lew P., History of Southwest Virginia, p. 70 (2) Addington, R. Pages 27 to 34

another researcher questioned her work also:

The Hargis Family - Part 1
By Mary DeBusk Voth, June 1981
states: Many think that William, Samuel, Whitesides, James, John, and Benjamin were brothers and sons of John. There is no proof. The story of the brothers starting to Kentucky with Daniel Boone is not true. An for the record, I agree with her, Sharon Perry, 2013

From her (Ms. Hull's) information, it went next to Dr. Hargis's Book in 1980 who used this same information

information on Dennis Hargis
Christian County, Ky - Volume 2 - Page 57 -
1991 - History
Lionel Desmond Hargis was the son of Dennis Hargis, NC and Drusilla Ann Shaw Hargis of St. Louis, MO. C., November 17, 1810, being the son of Dennis and Drusilla A. (Shaw) Hargis. Dennis was a native of North Carolina and a colonel of militia in that State. Drusilla was born in Maryland in 1787. Our subject came to Tennessee in 1827 and settled in White County, and from there moved to Hickman County; thence to Smith County, where he was elected magistrate and from that county came to Stewart in February, 1844. On December 26, 1830, he was united in marriage to M. A. Hollifed. Our subject is a magistrate and has been a member of the County Court of Stewart County for forty consecutive years.
Goodspeed's History of Stewart County: Biographies

In a bio on DDC Hargis, son of Dennis was born in Pike County, Tn. There is no Pike County in this state, however from Sparta Tn , a short distance away, but in another county is a town named Pikeville. From notes we know that year, Dennis was living in Sparta.

William the Brother of Dennis Hargis Was William A Hargis the Rev. War Soldier, Ensign, that died in White County Tn. Both lived in Sparta. That Williams birth 1760.

Evidence of Dennis in White County.
p. 8 in book of abstracts White County Newspapers Miscellaneous 1829-31
June 20, 1829 Land Sale
By virtue of two writs of Venditioni Exponas, issued from the worshipful court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions of White county, and to me, directed, I will expose to sale, at the Court House in the town of Sparta, on Saturday, the 15th of August next, for cash in hand; all the right, title, claim, interest, and demand, that DENNIS HARGIS has in and to 250 acres of land,
sold by DAVID SNODGRASS & Co. to said Hargis and REBECCA E. SHAW in county, the lands adjoining RICHARD BROWN and said Snodgrass; to satisfy two
judgments and executions in favour of DAVID SNODGRASS, against said DENNIS HARGIS, before JAMES H. PASS, Esq., and levied by GEORGE MCGEE, Constable.
By DAVID L. MITCHELL, sheriff of White county
The year one of his children was born here.
Rebecca Shaw is the sister of Drucilla Shaw Hargis, daughters of Joseph.

It does seem that there may be some relation, because Dennis and L. D. are living now next door to Our William in Smith Co in 1840, or it may be just coincidence. L. D. was a lawyer and took a job with the Court during this time.

Rev. Later he is said to have removed to the "Ridge," or Highland Rim, where he still has numerous descendants. William Hargis is believed to have been a brother of John.(Cal's Col.)
Dixon's Creek, 1801, 1802 court records (Smith County, Tn)

Tennessee Tombstone's by Jeanette T. Acklen - 2009
page 470
John Hargis, I was told by Mrs.Mary E. Rowark, age 91 years, at the time, recently deceased, that there are old soldiers buried in the graveyard on the old Hargis place, one half mile from Lafayette on the Brattontown Road, and that John Hargis possibly was buried there. He died about 1821

This is just an interesting note to history, in early years in the eastern part of the state, there is a report recorded that a Hargis, was a friend to a Chickamauga Cheif, and some Jacobs families of N. C were known to be native also, just not Cherokee, noted in early N. C. history.
*****************************************************************
William A Hargis 1760 - 1836 married Elizabeth, died in White Co. Tn Rev. War Vet. born in Virginia
Ms. Hull states she got info from: Maud Roberts Martin, of Ozark, Ala.
The line of William Asa Hargis has also been accepted by D.A.R. genealogists; and as you know, they are very strict as to the data they accept. But she states William Asa Hargis was born in England. As it appears that it was necessary for a man to have been over twenty-one to have bought and sold land, it seems certain that he was past twenty-one in 1668. (it started with problems)
Son of Richard and Jane Jean Unknown Hargis

******************************************************************
Our William Hargis 1769-1852 married Hanna Howell both died in Macon Co. Tn. Son of William and Jennie Jacobs Hargis
William and Hanna were married 3 Feb 1791 in Caswell Co. N. C. where a William Hargis signed as bondsman, and J.
Howard,
How much information have you been able to find on Peter Brookes? I am able to find very little about him, as he was one of (I believe) 6 brothers that came over from England before many records were kept. Feel free to message me if you'd like. Also, to the OP, I would love to get the info about N.S. and David from you when you have a chance. Thanks!

Interested in any information you may have. I have alot and would love to compare notes. I am a gg-granddaughter of Lucas Thomas (brother to Nathaniel S & David W that you mentioned). I have pieced together much of the information on John Richard (Old Dick) Brooks' lineage as well and would love to compare & share notes & any pictures. I do know that Old Dick & Mahulda owned a tanyard about 7 miles east of Lafayette TN. the coordinates of the John R Brooks Tanyard Cemetary can be found online now, and my dad and I are trying to plan a trip out there (we live on the other side of Nashville) to see the cemetary and one of the cousins still lives around Portland, and she says she has some information as well.
Ethel Estelle was the daughter of Thomas BOHANNON Brooks. There are many that cite his name as Thomas S, but this is not true. Thomas Bohannon Brooks (b. 1865) m. 1/ Peggy Adams. 2/ Luhada Snyder. Thomas' parents were Lucas Thomas 'Luke' & Mary Jane Owens. Parents of Mary Jane Owens were Groner Owens & Martha Ann Williams. Parents of Lucas Thomas were John Richard (Old Dick) Brooks and Mahulda Hargis Brooks. Old Dick & Mahulda owned the Brooks Tanyard about 7 miles east of Lafayette TN. I do have information that continues up the tree for the Brooks family, all the way back to a John Peter Brookes (s/o John Brookes, born around 1610 and Christened in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England) that came to Virginia from England in 1638. Story is that John Peter was one of 6 Brookes brothers that came over and their parents originated in Scotland. 3 brothers went North, the other 3 South. John Peter's grandson or G-grandson is where the name changes from Brookes to Brooks. I have all of this information listed in my Brooks family tree and will be glad to share if you are still looking for the info. email me at jmb6685@aol.com. :)

PS: I am the GG-granddaughter of Lucas Thomas.

Jessica

Seems my parents were right. All the census records show that Bailey & Mary lived on Westfork Creek Road, which connects into Ben Road off of Rocky Mound Road. Bailey is my great grandfather. Was hopeful someone had a photo of his wagon with him in the photo.

Parents of Walter Lee Simmons

Hello!

I am researching the ancestry of my great grandfather, Walter Lee Simmons, Sr. (b. 06 Nov 1871 in Little Rock, Arkansas; d. 18 Oct 1960 in Indianapolis, Indiana). He's buried in Haysville Cemetery.

The first record for Walter Lee Simmons that I can find is from the 1900 census. At that time, he was already married to Della Edna Hanes (m. 07 Mar 1892; b. 23 Aug 1873 in Macon County, Tennessee; d. 03 Mar 1959 in Indianapolis, Indiana), and already had children.

It's documented by a deceased family member that his father was Andrew Simmons (b. 02 Nov 1850 in Tennessee; d. 04 Jun 1876) and mother was Alice Gipon/Gibson/Gipson (m. 18 Jun 1871; b. ? in Tennessee; d. ?).

You'll noticed that Andrew and Alice were married just four months prior to Walter's birth. It's theorized that Alice possibly went to Arkansas to give birth to Walter, before returning to Macon County. That would explain why he was born out of state.

There is an 1880 census record for W. Simmons who is living with his mother, Alice Hire, and a half-sister named Sadie, but it's not conclusive. Alice is listed as head-of-household, so I don't know who she married in order to find a marriage record. Since Andrew died in 1876, when Walter was just 4, it's likely that Walter was an only child and Alice remarried a year or two later, but I'm not sure.

(I am aware of another Alice Hire who lived in Macon County and is the daughter of Smith and Sarah/Sally Woodcock. While I am related to her, she is definitely not the Alice Hire who shows up in that 1880 census record.

Any help is greatly appreciated! You can respond to me here or send me email at matt@netmonkey.net.

Thanks!

Matt Barton
Indianapolis, IN
matt@netmonkey.net

Historical School District Sumner Co area now Macon Co.

Does anybody know of a map that would show the historical school districts in Sumner County? Or can you help with a geographical description of the area? I found a list of the scholastic populations for Sumner Co from 1838, 1839 & 1840 on rootsweb. These lists show the Head of House & their # of kids enrolled in the schools. District 15, where I found my Samuel Lawrence family, has a brief description of where it is located, but since I am not from the area, I don't recognize the geographical description. The description of Sumner Co School District 15 written in June 1838 is... "We have designated three school houses but this is not sufficient to meet the convenience of all the people. This district is so cituated; the settlements are three, being on two creeks, and a ridge at the heads of the creeks & between the creeks there is a waste part where there is no person living. It is desired of the people that we should make application to the superintendent if it be practicable that means be taken to divide the present Civil District into two school Districts & this much better meet the convenience of the Citizens.-" I believe this area must be in what is now Macon County because many of the families listed in Dist 15 were later listed together in the Macon Co Census. Does anybody recognize this description? What town would this have been near? Thanks

According to the cemetery list there is a Carr-Oglesby Cemetery. Not to be confused with the Oglesby Cemetery where Elisha Oglesby is buried.

Carr-Oglesby is supposted to be at 12th district Map 87 parcel 19.00 or 25:00. Can someone from the Historical Sociaty locate this cemetery (which has listings in your book) and possibly let me know the GSP location. I would like to add it to Findagrave.com as well as plan it for a visit.

I have relatives buried there and would like to know exactly where it is at before my trip in the spring =)

Thank you,
Martha Caswell
Los Lunas, NM

The page 154 in Macon Roots, A Record of the Families of Macon County, Tennessee in 1850 has a listing for Isham Meadow with a comment “The following is listed as residing in this household:” The list which is for Isham Meadow and the children from him and Obedience Bradshaw includes Eli Meadow. The Sources at the bottom of the page includes Tennessee census books and research of Velda Meadow. I should also note that Meadow is frequently spelled Meador.

The lack of good Proof Documents showing that Isham Meador (b 1762, d 1840) and Bitty (Bradshaw) Meador’s son was Eli Meador (b 1787, d 1847) is one if the biggest problems in validating the Meador lineage.

Does anybody have sources for the listing of the children of Isham and Obedience? Also, how can I contact Velda Meadow?

I have been to the Coleytown Cemetery and saw the graves of the Coleys and family buried there. I also went to the Morgan-Pirtle Cemetery for Coley burials there too. These cemeteries sound like they are going the same direction as the Haley Cemetery. The PVA office at the Macon County Courthouse gave us directions to the cemeteries. The rest of my line is buried in Simpson County, KY. I do have copies of the Coley families found in the book mentioned in this post. Thank you for your help.

In the book "MACON COUNTY TENNESSEE HISTORY AND FAMILIES" published by Dave Turner of Turner Publishing Paducah , KY. there are 14 separate articles on the COLEY families.
One mentioned Wm. Arthur Coley [1883-1968] as living in Coleytown , TN. I'm not sure where that is.
Another article list burials in Coleytown Cemetery.
I never knew until I read your 1st post of any Coleys buried in the Haley Cemetery.
Best wishes,
Allen Toungette

Thanks for this info. I am a third greatgrand daughter of William D. Coley--son Benjamin Coley. The family I have recently researched was of William's son John James Coley. It seems most of his descendents are buried in Haley Cemetery. They all died of tuberculosis at an early age, according to death certificates. I found no more descendents of this line. William D. Coley, John James Coley, and Benjamin Coley were all in the Civil War from Macon County, TN. I have extensive research on this Coley line.
