OBIT Lookup

I need an obit for two-three people.

1) ROLAND REED, b. 1 Feb. 1908; d. 17 Jul. 1991 (buried in Pine Grove Cemetery). He was an editor for the newspaper there in the 1940s.

2) HELEN (SIMPSON) REED, b. 29 Jan. 1913; d. 22 Aug. 1998 (buried in Pine Grove Cemetery). She was married to Roland.

3) JANE (SIMPSON) BROWN, b. 19 Aug. 1915; d. 14 Jun. 2000. She was married to a well-known lawyer there. I am not sure where she is buried, but she and her husband had a son that she called G.I. BROWN. He has also since passed away.

I do know in the 1940 Census, Roland, Helen, and Jane were living in Jasper with my step-grandmother, Betty Simpson. Any help would be wonderfully appreciated!!! As of right now I do know Helen, Jane, and Grandma Betty had three brothers, one of which was named MAX. I know that he passed on in Missouri I believe (according to family). Grandma Betty married Grandpa Ted in 1943 in Kirksville, Missouri. I am trying to find their parents and so on.

Renae

Mattie Jane & Thomas are my paternal gg-grandparents. I've never been able to find a death cert for him either, and I agree that he is not the son of James Murray & Sarah Birdwell.

The only other information I can give you that I know is true is that Thomas was married to another woman before Mattie Jane. We think her name was Fanny Chance. I got this information from a descendant of Mary Magdalene "Mollie" Murray. Mollie was the only daughter of Thomas Murray and Fanny Chance. Mollie married Noah C. Harris and died in Marion County in 1934.

Noah Harris was the brother of my maternal g-grandpa, Will Harris. Please let me know if you turn up anything on Thomas Newton Murray.

Donna O'Brien

Does anyone know if this cemetery actually exists? I have an ancestor (John Thornton born 1844 died Jul. 6, 1883) that is supposedly the only one listed in findagrave who is buried there and I am wondering if it is a mistake. Has anyone living in Marion County ever heard of this cemetery- The Old Union Grove Cemetery? Here is the memorial I am interested in: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=23... and info on this cemetery: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GRid=23...;
Trying to track down his headstone for any additional info.

This is a follow-up to my previous postings at the following sites:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlock/675.3.1/mb.ashx
http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ten...

I have located the family of James B. CARLOCK, Jr. (b. 1840) and his wife Mary R. LOWRY (1843 – 1908), with their surname spelled “CALLOCK” on the 1870 census for P.O. Jasper, Marion Co., TN, p. 430, dwelling 57, family 57. This census verifies that their son Asberry CARLOCK, age 13 on the 1880 census, was the same person as Creed A. CARLOCK. He is listed as Crede CALLOCK, age 3, on the 1870 census.

I have also located Creed A. CARLOCK on the 1890 tax list for Murray Co., GA.

I have not yet been able to locate any additional information about Creed after he left Murray Co., Georgia, ca. 1899.

I show Creed’s CARLOCK lineage as follows:

Johan Peter “Hans” GERLACH
David GERLACH/CARLOCK
Hanchrist CARLOCK
Lemuel CARLOCK
Joseph CARLOCK
James B. CARLOCK, Sr.
James B. CARLOCK, Jr.
Creed A. CARLOCK

For additional information about this CARLOCK family, see the GERLACH report on my home page.

For a photograph of Creed A.
CARLOCK Family of Marion County, Tennessee

Reference: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlock/675.3.1/mb.ashx

Has anyone been able to locate the family of James B. CARLOCK, Jr. (b. July 1840, TN) and his wife Mary R. (b. 26 May 1843, GA) on the 1870 census? I’m exploring the possibility that their son Asberry CARLOCK, b. 1866 – 1867, TN, who was living in their household in Marion Co., TN, at the time of the 1880 census, could be the same person as Creed A. CARLOCK, b. TN, who probably married Margaret MCCRARY, 10 Nov 1883, Marion Co., TN, then married Eva WEAVER, ca. 1890, and worked as a singing school teacher, probably in Murray Co., GA. Creed reportedly abandoned Eva and their chidren and went “out west” when Eva was pregnant with their fifth child who was born Sept. 1899, GA.

Does anyone have any additional information on either Asberry CARLOCK or Creed A. CARLOCK?

Does anyone have any additional information about Margaret MCCRARY CARLOCK?

Does anyone have an approximate birth year for Creed A.

Hi again. Some information I came by today says that Harry Martin, (S/O Jim Martin and Maggie Redman), born 15 June 1888, died 16 Feb. 1915, was the husband of Flora Ferguson. They had children Trilby b.1909 married a Wilson, and Harry Eugene b.1914. Flora remarried after Harry's death to Robert Kennemore and they had children; James, Robert, and Milton Kennemore. Does anyone have anymore information about this family? I'd really appreciate any input.
Thank-you, Sandy

Hello,
I'm Hoping to find some information on the James L Martin family. Jim, or J L, was born in Ky, (1836-1903)but lived most his life in Marion County Tennessee around the South Pittsburg area. His wife, Margaret/Maggie Redman,(1850-1914)was born in Georgia, I believe around the Ringgold, Catoosa County area because that's where they were married. Their children; Walter, Harry, Roy (wife Josie),Mandie Belle (1880-1887), and perhaps Frederick and Others? All born and raised in Marion County. J L, daughter Mandie Belle and a couple of others are buried at the Burl/Burrell Lee Cemetery AKA Gunter Cemetery.
Can anyone tell me anything about Maggie? She's supposed to be buried by J L, according to her death certificate but I don't find her on the cemetery list. Does anyone know anything about their children and grandchildren? Any little bit of information will be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks, Sandy

Bobby Lee Atterton died March 9, 2008. A very short obit ran in the Chattanooga Times Free Press on Mar 20, 2008 stating there would be a memorial service. It only listed the close surviving family. Reed Funeral Home, 11675 Highway 28, Whitwell, TN 37397 handled the arrangements. You might call or write them a letter for more information. They probably have a copy of the death certificate. Also listed was Ricky Atterton and Debra Reed of Whitwell as siblings. You might be able to get in touch with one of them. Email me through Ancestry.com if you need any more help.

This is how it was described to me:
"it is marked with a number etched in a concrete stone upright also stating he was Indian". He probably died between 1940 and 1960.

Hi,

I would sincerely appreciate someone looking in the 1860, 1890, 1900 and 1910 Tennessee (Marion Co) Census records for my ancestor John FARMER- Born Alabama 1852-Died March 1927 Jefferson Co., AL. I am trying to identify his parents who were both born in NC.

I found my ancestor in the 1880 Marion Co TN Census and I am completely confident that this is him as I descend from his daughter Minnie also listed within.

1880 Census - Farmer Family Household
District 13, Marion County Tennessee

John FARMER Self M Male W 28 1852 Coal Miner AL NC NC
K. This 1870 census record MAY or May NOT be my ancestor. Even though his birth year of 1852 is correct, his birth state is incorrectly listed as TN.

1870 Census - Collins Family Household
District 13 Marion County Tennessee

Collins, William, age 67, Farm Laborer, bp: NC
Collins, Charlotta, age 55, bp: NC
Collins, Druecilla, age 17, bp: NC
Collins, William, age 15, bp: NC
Farmer, John, age 18, bp: TN (born TN 1852)
Farmer, Susan, age 18, bp: NC

Happy New Year!
Posted for another.

There are several references in the Index of VII Keepsake Memories Calendar of Events 1700'-1925 Marion County TN by Nonie Webb; of Elizabeth "Betsy" Pack.

There is a Historical Marker on the Courthouse Lawn "Betsy Pack" Born Elizabeth Lowery, daughter of Chief John Lowery of the Cherokee, she lived in a house about 60 yards southeast after her marriage. She donated the ground on which the town of Jasper was laid out in 1820, when the county seat was moved here from Cheekville, near Whitwell about 12 miles northeast.

1819 August. Cherokee Indian Elizabeth (Betsy) Pack gave 40 acres of land including a "Town Spring" from her Reservation to the County of Marion to build a Court House & a County Seat the city of Jasper.

From: Land Records 1831-1840 : Pack, Elizabeth (Heirs of ) 1850 W.H. RUTLEDGE, G.W. CAMPBELL, & Wm. PACK.

From: 1st Families Marion Co TN 1809-1836+ 1840 Census
PACKS listed: Betsy PACK, Elizabeth, John Stone, Johnston, Joseph, Moses, Robert, Thomas. many of these appear to have lived in the 1836 Tax Dist #10.

Elizabeth Pack was a wealthy Ferry owner in the vicinity of Nickajack Cave. Elizabeth's parents , John and Elizabeth Lowery also owned a well known and highly profitable ferry at the mouth of Battle Creek (& TN River at different times.
Is anyone familiar with Jerry Blevins books for these records? There seem to be several different versions which vary in length quite a bit and I'm wondering what they contain.

Union Primitive Baptist Church book, 1821-1868 (1987) 125 pages.

Union Primitive Baptist Church book, 1821-1868 : name changed in 1834 to Sweeten's Cove Primitive Baptist Church, Marion County, Tennessee (1987) 125 pages. [Edited version of the above?]

Old Primitive Baptist Church Books, Marion County, Tennessee (1992) 71 pages.

On the Marion Co website there are some church rolls for this church:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnmario2/areaphotoalbum.ht...

Were these rolls taken from Jerry Blevins' books?

I am particularly interested if there is any information in these books regarding Ray (and Overturf) families. The names of Thomas Ray, Hannah Ray and John Overturf have appeared together in some land documents and I think the families may be related in some way. I have found the names of John and Jane Overturf in the rolls [above] so the Ray families may also be associated with the Sweetens Cove Church.

Any help would be appreciated.

I’m looking for information on Elizabeth Pack. She was a Cherokee woman who lived in Jasper, Tennessee before being removed to Oklahoma during the Trail of Tears. Particularly any information on her children and other family members. Her father’s name was John Lowery, he was a Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. According to an article published by the Patrick County, VA Historical Society, Elizabeth Pack lived in Patrick County for a time and then returned to Tennessee around 1835. It was reported that she left in Virginia two sons (Isham and Greenville) and a daughter. My wife is related to Rachel Pack of Patrick County, VA (daughter of Isham Pack) and we would like information that might show that Rachel Pack and Elizabeth Pack were related. We would appreciate any information on Elizabeth Pack.
STEPHENS genealogy 1600s-1900s NC>?SC>TN>GA>AL

Searching for information on any of the Dade County Stephens/Stevens line as I am trying to work my way back to the NC Stephens/Stevens/Stephenson/Stevenson lines. Have found these spellings interchangable on several of these lines. I am zeroing in on Washington Stephens of 1830 Marion Co., TN as possible ancestor. Likely some connection to the Mashack/Meshack and Shadrack Stephens line that were in middle TN in 1800s and one Shade was in Dade Co., GA later. Some of Thomas Grainger/Granser Stephens line have been found to be connected to this line. Several are thought to be sons of Mashack Stephens b. 1756 in NC and whose parents were Joseph Stephens and 3 wives, Elizabeth Dyer, Mary Todd, and Anne Dudley. I invite as many Stephens (etc.) males as possible to join the Stephens DNA project as we are making matches and differentiating lines using DNA.

In 1840 census, my Doctor/Doc was there along with Galentine/Galotine/Gallinten, etc. and Shadrack Stephens.

Marion Co, TN; Morgan Co, TN, and Fentress Co, TN are of strong interest in regards to these people, some from SC, some from NC.

With all the new online records, we should be able to keep this site busy with Stephens (etc.) related information. The name has been found back to the late 1600s in America so we got here before the colonies began....maybe trappers, traders, military, don't know what brought us here this early in history.

Can anyone help with this research?
Is the surname search still available from the Bridgeport Railroad Museum? I have found my husband's ancestors on the 1860 census. Their names are William and Abigail Long, but the last name is mispelled as Leng. Would love to know if there is any more info on this couple. They had a baby daughter, Margaret, listed on the census as well.

I should of said 1860 Overton County, Tn. I am thinking after civil war they moved to head of Valley (Bledsoe County) for some time. John Hutson married Sarah Rector there before they all moved to Marion Co., Tn. I have no idea where Frank Miller came from, but Overton or Cumberland Co Tn might be a good place to look.

There are Miller in head of Valley (Cumberland Co Tn section) These people would of live near Bledsoe-Cumberland County, Tn Line.

WGW
