I'm researching a Charles Molton, born in TN in 1841 & died in Lancaster PA in 1925. I've found him in the censuses for Lanc from 1870-1920. But having a hard time finding him before 1870. He might be listed on a site about colored Union solders, but I wouldn't know how to find such a website. His tombstone only reads: CO A 24th US CAV. Does that mean he was in PA or at least MD by 1860 or when he enlisted? How would I go about finding him on other websites other than one about Civil War soldiers? I figure his last name comes from his owner or father's owner. I see in 1850, there was one Molton family living in TN & that being in Meigs Co, headed by a Noble N Molton, 44, farmer. How can I investigate further Charles' family using this info?
