Well, as for her husband (Joshua Winchester Garrett), having her name changed ("Mary Patrick"), upon marriage, was because his 1st Wife's name was "Polly Ann Kirk", so when he asked that (his 2nd Wife) her name be changed to "Polly Sue Garrett", that makes sense, because he wanted and did call her "Polly", as he did his 1st Wife.

(So, he probably called his 1st Wife, "Polly Ann", and his 2nd Wife, "Pollie Sue")

As for the "Mary Sue Patrick" possibility, that sorta makes sense, because, though their Marriage license says, "Mary Patrick", she definitely could have been Mary "Sue" Patrick, and when he changed her name to "Pollie Sue Garrett", he kept her middle name.

So, it's possible, that there is a little bit of truth, in both scenarios, huh?

"
Since Pollie Sue Garrett was consistent with her story (from what she told my Grandmother, Bertha Claudine Melton, and "at least" my Uncle, Bobby Joe Arney), she truly believed was she told them, was true.

She would know who her Parents were, what her name once was, "Mary Patrick", when her Parents died, in 1880 (when she was 12 years old), etc.
Now, in 1880, "Mary Patrick" would have been 12 years old, when her Parents died, and she was adopted, by a "White Man's" family.
I wonder, if they had to go before, some Court, in order to make it official, and if so, do the records still exist today?"

that is one of the parts that lacks fact from a romantic story to tell grandkids, like my Grandmother and the story of a Banshee and fairies that took her Granddad, is what my Dad told me, ( I still love that story, and she put a saucer of milk out every night for the fairies, but know it isn't fact.) Yes it could have been her grandparents, but not her parents. Plus they could not have only used NA names, but would have had to of taken English names. I think her parents could be the John Patrick and Hester Comer Patrick . Their Daughter Mary Sue is right age, in right area. the other part of story which is off is joshua W garret naming her . If she was taken in by another family, they would have had to give her a name, not wait until she was 20 and getting married. Yes, there would be court records if they made it legal, but a lot of people, in rural farm country, took in orphans and that was that. no courts. Kids just lived with them, but they usually kept their own names.
I'm going to do some checking for you, when I have time and see if we can uncover anything.

My apologies about the redundancy (I have MS, and sometimes forget what I have sent or read).

I have a lot of questions myself, about Pollie Sue Garrett's story.

Since the "Trail of Tears" was completed, in 1839, and "Mary Patrick" (aka Pollie Sue Garrett) was born in 1868, nearly 30 years after the event, there is no way she had any intimate knowledge of it.

She states that, her Parents & Grandparents, were part of the "Trail of Tears", and were on the route, when they escaped. Since it was in 1838-1839, her Parents could have been between 5-10 years old, at the time.

Which means, either her Parents were fairly old, say 35-45 years old, when "Mary Patrick" was born, or they couldn't have been on the "Trail of Tears".

Now, her Grandparents and Great-Grandparents, could have been on the "Trail of Tears".

I wonder, if they had to go before, some Court, in order to make it official, and if so, do the records still exist today?

I had read your story, but the only part I question, is Pollie Patrick's parents not taking an anglicized names. Not sure they could have kept NA names and language for 41 years, as trail of tears was in 1838-39 for Cherokee nation. My thought was her father took an another name.

First of all, let me thank you, very much, for taking the time, to look into this for me, I really appreciate it.

Here is information, passed on by Mary Patrick (aka Pollie Sue Garrett):

"Joshua's second wife Pollie Sue was given her name by Joshua. She was a Full Blooded Cherokee; she had taken a white man's name of Mary Patrick. Her parents never took a white man's name, they kept their Cherokee names. Joshua changed Mary's name to Mary "Pollie Sue" Garrett when they married. He called her Pollie, as he did his first wife.

Mary Patrick's parents and grandparents escaped from the Tail of Tears as they were on the route. They were members of the "Paint" clan. They hid out in an area SW of McMinnville , Tennessee. They later went along with many other Cherokee to the area of Putnam, Overton, and Clay counties. Many Cherokee knew of this area because of "The Standing Stone" at Monterey.

They died when Mary was twelve; she was taken in by a family of Kirkpatrick’s in Clay County and raised by them. She took the name Mary Patrick; she only used part of the Kirkpatrick name.

Pollie Sue was a mid-wife who delivered many children. She was taught this skill by her mother and Grand Mother. Joshua, her husband, was a "Medicine Man" that is why people called him "Dock". She delivered almost all of my brothers and sisters, including myself. Her name appears on many birth certificates of people born in Overton/Clay County area.

[She told this story to her Great-Grandson, Bobby Joe Arney, she also told the same story to her Grand-daughter, Bertha Claudine Melton-Arney, Bobby Joe Arney's Mother.]

Unfortunately, I have been unable to confirm or dismiss, her information.

Trying to locate the White Family that adopted Mary Patrick

I'm trying to figure out, the family that adopted "Mary Patrick", after her Cherokee Indian Parents died in 1880.

Joshua Winchester Garrett's (1844-1925) second wife "Pollie Sue Garrett" (1868-1942) was given her name by Joshua. She was a Full Blooded Cherokee Indian; she had taken a white man's name of "Mary Patrick". Her parents never took a white man's name, they kept their Cherokee names. Joshua changed Mary's name to "Pollie Sue Garrett" when they married. He called her "Pollie", as he did his first wife.

Mary Patrick's parents and grandparents escaped from the "Trail of Tears" as they were on the route. They were members of the "Paint" clan. They hid out in an area Southwest of McMinnville, Tennessee. They later went along with many other Cherokee to the area of Putnam, Overton, and Clay counties. Many Cherokee knew of this area because of "The Standing Stone" at Monterey, Tennessee.

Her (Mary Patrick's) died when Mary was twelve; she was taken in by a White family in Clay County and raised by them. She took the name "Mary Patrick", and married Joshua Winchester Garrett, in 1888.

Mary Patrick, aka Pollie Sue Garrett, told both my Paternal Grandmother, and Paternal Uncle, about this, so I'm taking it as the "truth" or (factual).

So, I'm trying to locate the "White Family", that adopted her. Some say, their surname was "Kirkpatrick" (and she only claimed 1/2 their surname), others say, it really was "Patrick".

Any suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation.

"Standing Stone, Tenn. Monterey Early History,” was written by the late John Roy Dillard

I'm looking to see if anyone has a copy of this book.

I'm interested in learning where the original location of The Standing Stone was.

In researching, over the Internet, it's possible original location was in near the town now known as Monterey, TN.
It was located not far from the town of McMinnville, TN.

I know the actual Stone was once in the shape of a Bear, then was intentionally changed, by the Cherokee, to the shape of a Dog. The actual remaining stone, was destroyed by the Railroad company to make room for the railroad. There were two remnants left, one of which was taken to the town of Monterey, TN, where "The Standing Stone Monument" stands today.

My Cherokee Ancestors escaped the "Trail of Tears" by hiding out in caves near "The Standing Stone", and settled in Overton & then Clay Counties, in Tennessee.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it
