Maury Elementary School, which I attended in the 1950s, was torn down a number of years ago for 'progress!' It was actually on the National Register of Historic Places, as you said, but that didn't keep Memphis from tearing it down. (I was able to get a few bricks and gave at least one to each of my elementary school friends with whom I am still in contact.)
There is a great photo of the building (probably from the era you mentioned) in the main hallway of Memphis City Schools - but good luck getting a copy. I've tried. I am going to CONTINUE to try now that I've retired, so if I am successful, I'll be glad to send you a copy.
BTW - are you related to Dr. Maury for whom the school was named?
