My friend Randy was born March 5, 1956 at the Methodist Hospital, Shelby County, Tennessee. He lived with his parents Janet Lynn Jones and Lyle Jones before the adoption. He was adopted in 1960 by Baxter and Virginia Brown. He started elementary school about 1961/1962. His adopted name is Randy Brown.
He has no paperwork from the adoption. The Adoption Records
from years 1951-1959 were suppose to be accessible, but they stated his was permanently sealed.

He was four when he was adopted. They told him he was part of an adoption scam. His biological parents names are Janet Lynn Jones and Lyle Jones from Memphis, TN. Lyle Jones robbed a bank in Arkansas around the 1950s. He was from Memphis,Tennessee area.

He saw the original birth certificate and it said he was born May 5, 1952, Methodist Hospital, Memphis, TN. The birth certificate he was issued states he was born March 5, 1956.
He has attempted to obtain the records. He wants to know who his family is and meet his siblings.
If anyone can help me REUNITE HIM with his BIOLOGICAL FAMILY, I would be ETERNALLY GRATEFUL!!!

Malisa

Hello,
I need some help. I am trying to find out about this family.
I have seen the census data, but I wonder if anyone could look-up obits, wedding announcements, wills or any newspaper stories? I do not have death dates or places on some. Every tidbit helps fill in the blanks! First are the parents, then the children with their spouses when I knew them.

1 Norman LeNoir Avery
b: 01 Jan 1853 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee
d: 09 Sep 1907 in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto County, Texas
.+Minerva Fisher Pullen
b: 25 Dec 1856 in Richmond, Virginia
m: 03 Nov 1875 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee
d: 04 Jan 1929 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee

.2 Norman Lenoir Avery
b: 21 Aug 1878 in Gills Station, Tennessee
d: 29 Nov 1943 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee
+ did he ever marry? whom and when?

.2 Walter Graham Avery
b: 20 Nov 1880 in Osceola, Arkansas
d: Nov 1881 where?

.2 Charles Leslie Avery
b: 18 Feb 1883 in Osceola, Arkansas
d: 11 Jun 1963 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee
.+Myrtle Brodie
b:? when and where?
d: 18 Sep 1936 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee

.2 Benjamin Pullen Avery
b: 18 Dec 1884 in Osceola, Arkansas
d: 15 Jun 1885 where?

.2 Eugene Redford Avery
b: 25 Apr 1887 in Osceola, Arkansas
d:? when and where?
+ I know he married but to whom and when?

.2 Percy Prince Avery
b: 09 Mar 1889 in Osceola, Arkansas
d: 16 May 1894 where?
.
.2 Minnie Pullen Avery
b: 27 Jul 1891 in Osceola, Arkansas
d: 19 Jan 1967 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee
+ did she ever marry?

Thank you for any help, it is much appreciated!
Regards,
Barbara

I believe the Father was born in Kentucky but am not sure. There were 4 other children besides Joseph (I believe all boys). They moved to Texas around the turn of the century, but I don't have an exact date. If anyone thinks they might have a connection to this family, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

1950 census - Henry McCall and Ann Hill family

After a long search, I finally found my great-great-great-grandfather, Henry McCall...or so I thought.

In the 1950 census for Shelby County, Ward #3, Henry McCall (age 41 and a bookkeeper) was living with Ann Hill (age 34, whom we all thought was his wife!) and two sons, Edward Hill (age 12) and William H Hill (age 7).

Over the next 50 years, William H Hill at some point changed his name to McCall, and fathered a son (William Lafayette McCall) who married Nannie Franklin Kelley. William and wife Nannie can be found with their daughter Flossie in the 1900 Decatur County census, 11th Civil Disctrict.

That leaves a 50 year gap that I can't seem to fill. Anyone have any clues? Were Henry McCall and Ann Hill married? Was Henry McCall even the natural father of William H?

The only other information I have was some info my aunt gave me.
Hello,
I am researching a collection of letters written by a woman in the 1870s - in one letter, she mentions a Memphis lawyer by the name of Robert Perry Duncan, and states he was "leader of the Son" there.

Does anyone know what this means? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Looking for information on:
William ‘Elijah’ Clark, Reverend was born on March 12, 1876 in Henderson County, Tennessee and died March 01, 1908 in Sardis, Henderson County, Tennessee at the age of 32 - just 8 years after he had married and the same year his last child, Luna, was born;
he married Martha “Mattie” Jane Stanfill (later Coleman) who was born on November 24, 1881 in Henderson County, Tennessee – married on September 20, 1900 in Henderson County - their gravestones are together in the Sardis Cemetery and it is written:
Mattie Coleman Clark - she died September 01, 1971 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee at the age of 90 – she is shown as dying in a Memphis retirement home.
(She had made Memphis her home with her second husband, thought to have been a Mr. Coleman, also a Methodist Preacher.)
Her family’s farm was next door to the Clark farm. In the 1900 Census at age 24 he was living with his sister, Artie ‘Missie’ Clark and her husband John A. Montgomery on their farm, just prior to his marriage.
Elijah was a Methodist Preacher, probably around Sardis, Tennessee, but maybe in the Shady Hill or Crane Creek area.
As a widow, Mattie lived next door to her parents in the 1910 census with her four young children;
she was living in Sardis Town in the 1920 Census with her children,
so she apparently married second Mr. Coleman – married after 1920 – she was 39 in 1920.
Any help with this family would be appreciated,
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

I am a physician/researcher who is trying to contact anyone who may have undergone screening for cervical cancer by Pap smear between 1952-1962. Shelby County was the center for a major NIH trial. I would like to speak with anyone who might have been part of this trial, either as patient, physician, researcher or technologist. If so, I would conduct a phone interview for about 10-15 minutes. A small honorarium will be provided.

I am fairly new to genealogy and have discovered recently that my grandfather, William Ernest Jones (b. 1861), graduated from Memphis Hospital Medical College in 1894. I would like to have access to any records that may exist regarding him. He had a medical practice in Wilmot, Arkansas until his death in 1939. Does anyone know who to contact about archives from Memphis Hospital Medical College? I would be most grateful for any assistance.

My great-great-grandfather, Wily (Wiley, Wili) Jamison first appears in Tennessee records in Giles County in 1836. He married and they had several children, one of whom I'm particularly interested in--my great-grandfather James Henry Jamison. Somewhere between 1850 and 1860, Wiley disappears. I think he died either in Giles County (but no records there have emerged) or in Shelby County, as his wife and four of the kids appear in the Memphis area (1860 Census).

Can Wiley (under various spellings) Jamison/Jemison/Jamerson be found in any of Shelby County's cemetery books? Many of his family settled in Shelby County or across into Marshall County, Mississippi.

I can be contacted directly at patjbell@earthlink.net.

Tennessee

John was born 1806 in Philadelphia, PA and I know virtually nothing about Mary Jane, except that she may have been born in Georgia. I'm hoping to glean some critical info from their marriage record.

Thanks very much,
Liz O

Looking for information on the CHEEK family. Elijah and Mary "Polly" CHEEK came from Virginia to Memphis around 1850. They were in Crittenden County, Arkansas, in 1860, but Mary was back in Memphis by 1870.

I have been told that Elijah died in Tennessee around 1863. Would like confirmation and possibly burial information.

According to the online death index, Mary CHEEK died on 7 Dec 1877 in Memphis. I'm looking for burial information.

Elijah and Mary CHEEK were the parents of several children. So far I've identified:

Mary Margaret
George W.
Thomas H.
Sarah
Irene
Louisa
Mark

Any information on this CHEEK family would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Debbi

I am sure in past years there were Nashville Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway (later L&N Railroad) freight depot, passenger shelter and section houses at the Mullins Station. The depot and shelter were in west of Mullins Station Road (north-south) between State Road and abandoned track where the parking lots are locating for the Shelby County Correction Center. The section houses were in east of Mullins Station Road. Do you have the old picture of them? I have contacted the county archives office but they seems nothing help me anything.

Thanks,
Eric F...
http://www.oldncstlrr.8m.com/mullins.htm

They lived in the Memphis area of Shelby County, TN. There is a Charles Ferguson on SSDI that may be the person I am searching for but I have no proof at this time. Is there anyone on the board who knew Anna and Charles Ferguson? How can I find an obituary for the Charles Ferguson who died in 1973 in Millington, Shelby County, Tennessee?

Familysearch.org is currently working on Arkansas marriages from the 1890's. As an indexer, I have been surprised at the number of people from Memphis who married in Crittenden County AR. At least 80% of the licenses are from out of state and most from Memphis. If you are looking for Tennessee resident marriage licenses you might try eastern Arkansas Counties. Evelyn Brown

Two of my ancestors were married 30th Dec, 1844, how do I go about getting information about this? William Patterson ,22 b.N.C. married Mrs Sarah Edmons Gandy, 30. Do not know the town, only County.
And Mrs Gandy had 3 children, gender unknown, but census has them listed as: M.E. Gandy,b.1833, E.A. Gandy,b.1835, L.E. Gandy,b1839. Need anything anyone might offer on the Gandy family, will assume (Mr) Gandy deceased at the time.

Thanks in advance,
Wanda

George Taylor bn in Shelby Tn 1834

George Taylor was born in Shelby County in 1834 according to his CSA pension application. By 1860 there is a George W. Taylor living in McLennan County TX. He lived in the county West of the Brazos for another 10 yrs. because he is listed next door to his father-in-law Isaac Price in 1870. There is a family tradition that Margaret Ann and George may have been cousins, but there has never been any proof of that. Prices did live in Shelby County at one time, but I am not sure it was the same family since I have been unable to trace them either.

The one family in the 1840 census who had boys of an age to be George was a Joseph Taylor. By 1850, he is no longer in the county. Is there another researcher who may have found anything on George or Joseph to help sort this out? I'd like to eliminate Joseph if he isn't my family, but I can't find a clue. ANY help appreciated.

Lolene

PETERSON Family in Collierville, Shelby Co., TN 1840

Hi All,

I'm attempting to locate Peter PETERSON, husband of Sarah LIPSCOMB/LIPSCOM, and his family.

A Peter PETERSON is listed in the 1840 Census for Shelby Co., TN.

In the 1850 Census for Collierville, Shelby Co., TN, I find his daughter, Catherine "Katy" PETERSON (1823, AL -- 1915, TX) and her husband, Burse/Burris B. BLACKWOOD (1820, AL --1897, Locker, San Saba Co., TX)

The BLACKWOOD Family was living next to William E. GIBSON (abt 1810, TN --?) and his wife, Florina PETERSON (abt 1815, SC or AL -- ?). Florina is most likely the sister of Catherine "Katy" PETERSON BLACKWOOD.

The 1850 Census also showed a Peter PETERSON 18 yrs., TN living w/the BLACKWOOD Family. I would assume, Peter, is the brother of Florina and Catherine.

The death certificate for Catherine "Katy" PETERSON BLACKWOOD shows her father, Peter PETERSON and her mother, Sarah LIPSCOM (possibly LIPSCOMB).

I have also noticed several places in Collierville, TN named "PETERSON", Peterson Lake RD, etc.

I found this information on another message board:

"Eppy was in Shelby County, Tennessee as early as 1831 according to Goodspeed's History of Shelby County, Tennessee. In July 1831, justices of the Shelby County Court met and appoited judges to hold an election for members of congress on the first thursday and friday in august. Those appointed were Richard WHITBY, Peter PETERSON and Eppy WHITE. He, William WILLIAMS, and Peter PETERS were also were a part of a committiee to contract and be supervisors of the building of a bridge across the Thomas Creek on State Line Rd, At that time Stateline Td was designated to be a 1st class road. The bridge was to cost $15.00."
Genforum. Shelby Co., TN

The BLACKWOOD Family and the GIBSON Family were in Carouse, Ouachita Co., AR in the 1860 Census along with several members of Benjamin F. PRICE'S Family. I believe there are several marriaged between these families.

Please excuse any errors, I have attempted to verify this infomation.

Any information would be appreciated,
Linda Cashen Gaunt

Does anyone have any information on Clara Crooks? I have no facts stating that is her last name. I have just heard people talking about her on previous message boards.
Her last name can also be known as Delaney, possibly a marriage to Henry Delaney which Earl Franklin Delaney was born in 1897 in Catahoula County, La. She married J.E. Adams in MS in 1904 with Katie Adams being born in 1904, and lastly to William Monroe Maxey who was my great grandfather resulting in lots of children. She died in Shelby county TN in 1960.

My question to you. Was her last name really Crooks, or was it something different. I have really hit a road block.
Any information would be very appreciated!

Mariah Copell (Maxey)
WILLIAM E. GIBSON / FLORINA PETERSON

My ggg-grandparents are William E. GIBSON and Florina (Floranna) PETERSON. They married in Shelby Co., Tennessee in 1837. The 1850 Census shows they were still in Shelby Co., Tennessee with their children –
f- Philadelphia Gibson - b. 1836 in Tennessee, USA
f- Narcissa Gibson - b. 1838 in Tennessee, USA
f- Catharine Gibson - b. 1844 in Tennessee, USA

The 1860 Census shows them in Carouse, Ouachita Co., Arkansas, USA with the following children listed in the household –
Peter Gibson - b. 1851 in Arkansas, USA
f- James “Matilda” Gibson - b. 1854 in Arkansas, USA
m- David Euphrates "Frate" Gibson - b. 16 Jun 1857 in Arkansas, USA
f- Susan Gibson - b. 1857 in Arkansas, USA ( I believe she was his twin)
f- Rosina (Rosanna) Gibson - b. 1860 in Arkansas, USA

The 1870 Census shows Malinda P. GIBSON b. 1851 in Arkansas married to General Francis McCRACKEN in Craighead Co., Arkansas. In their household we find Malinda’s siblings –
f- James “Matilda” Gibson - b. 1854 in Arkansas, USA
m- David Euphrates "Frate" Gibson - b. 16 Jun 1857 in Arkansas, USA
f- Susan Gibson - b. 1857 in Arkansas, USA ( I believe she was his twin)

(NOTE ** - In the 1860 Census record we have James Matilda Gibson recorded as a male and she was a female. We know this due to other data and first hand accounts from her offspring.

We do not find Malinda P. Gibson in either the 1850 or 1860 Census records although she was born in 1851. We do however find another child recorded as a male by the name of Peter. Thus I am making an assumption that Peter is the middle name of Malinda.)

David Euphrates “Frate” GIBSON was my gg-grandfather so I know what happened to him. I would love to hear from more down his line that is searching and recording the family history though. David “Frate” married Amanda HANKINS in Craighead Co., Arkansas in 1887.

James Matilda GIBSON married William TURNER and followed her sister, Malinda and General Francis McCRACKEN to Boone County, Arkansas. Malinda died in 1880. Her husband remarried and raised the family there. Matilda’s family continued to grow and was raised there.

I would like to know what happened to Susan GIBSON and the other siblings. I would also like to know when, where and how their parents died. I would like to know the identity of William E. GIBSON’s parents. Florina’s father was Peter PETERSON. I do not know the identity of her mother for sure. If anyone can help with answer’s to some of my questions I would greatly appreciate it
Cholera in Memphis question

I had a ancestor who I was told died from Cholera while he was in Memphis TN he and his son in law both died from Cholera and was buried together. I am guessing about 1832-34. Is there any way that I can confirm this? Is there a Cholera death list. His name was John Brown he was from Vigo Co.Indiana and he and his son in law went to Memphis to buy bricks. They went by river.

Just wondering if there is any kind of records and if so how I can see if my ancestor is on it and where he would be buried at.

Thanks Kathy

biological Vick member with questions

I am looking for my birth mother and birth father. I do know my birth name was Douglas Lee Vick. I was born Feb 23, 1975 at Memphis Baptist Hospital. I was adopted soon after I was born. My name was legally Douglas Lee Vick for about 4 months. I am thankful for the hard and painful sacrifice my biological mother made. I have a 17 month old son and my wife is expecting our second child. I have a lot of questions about my biological families medical history and blood lines. I do not have an hard feelings and I am greatful for the life I have been given. I would like to find and have contact to have these questions answered. After all these years, I wonder if maybe she has forgotten about me or holds resentments against me. I hope this is not the case, but I understand if it is. I do know the mothers name was Susan Dianne Vick and her parents names are Robert Richard Vick and Lavelle Vick. They live in Memphis still and I think Susan lives in Colorado. Robert has a brother named Edward that lives in Miss.
