George W Lewis

I am researching a George W Lewis, who was from Kentucky, but relocated to New Mexico early in the 1800s. He was a pioneer, trapper, speculator, ran wagon lines of goods and settlers, and even worked as a mercenary to fight off Indian attacks. He died at the age of 65 while in a fight in Memphis, which would have been around 1860. All of the information that I have on him comes from a small paragraph in a book about the history of New Mexico which was published in 1895, however some of the dates might be off. I would like to know if anyone knows where he might be buried, and if they have any other information on him.

He had many children with his wife Marcelina Salas, who was a Spanish woman. Of their children was Charles W Lewis, who was a notable man in Albuquerque, and had much to do with the community for many years.

Here is the biography of George W Lewis from the book:

Biography of George W. Lewis (Taken from History of New Mexico, 1895)

George W. Lewis, a native of Kentucky, descended from two of the noted families of the South, the Lewis' and the Woods. When a young man he came with Kit Carson to New Mexico and for a number of years he was engaged in trapping beavers in the Rocky Mountains. At one time he was made a prisoner by the authorities at Santa Fe. After his release, he settled here and gave his attention to prospecting, mining and speculating, and at times helped the inhabitants in fighting the indians, who frequently made savage attacks upon the settlers. And here he met and married Miss Marcelina, the daughter of Don. Juan Antonio Salas, at the time Quartermaster of the King's Command at Santa Fe. In 1860 Mr. Lewis was killed in Memphis, where he took part in a fight, dying at the age of 65. His widow, who had 13 children, was an Ortiz.

thank you so much. I have the death records already. no one will tell me the real story of how she got killed. Her daughter and some friends was playing cards and her boyfriend kick in the door and everyone ran out the back door. Her mom came out later running toward the back door and he thought it was her daughter and beat her with a stick to her head. it was ruled as a homicide. So i want to read some articles in the newspaper. I will call you thanks you so much. I live in flint Michigan and if you need help look up something the least i can do is try to help you.

No, even though I live in the eastern suburbs I can say the problem is urban sprawl. The city has been moving east because that was the only way it could go. The MS River is the downtown western border, only a short few miles south and we are in Mississippi, moving north was inhibited by the topography (tremendous low lands, swampy etc). So east it has gone - for miles and miles. We are in a rather interesting location when one thinks of it. More later.

I wonder if it was left that way because it is on Elvis Presley Blvd that they somehow concetreated on his name and forget the rest of the area. its a shame. I wish you luck in getting something done.
Dear Sue, this cemetery came to my attention when I was 'googling' for directions for a funeral at the Forest Hill Cemetery Memphis (as opposed to some other locations). Yesterday I drove up Hernando Road, which is literally beside the I-240 and my heart broke. Hernando Road appears to never have been a street developed with houses, although that is a surprise to me. It is seedy looking and the gate to both Mt. Carmel and the Hollywood Cemetery, literally next door stand gaping open. How anything is left of it is a mystery to me. The local communities are likely on streets that run off Hernando - just a long block west of Elvis Presley Blvd, known as Bellevue to us old timers. There is a Memphis Remembered (sort of) website and I think I will post something there. Just as a matter of interest, there are at least five cemeteries right in a row along here: Calvary, across Person Rd is the Forest Hill Memphis, next to that is Temple Israel, then Hollywood then little Mt Carmel.

Sometimes people just get so busy that they forget those who have gone on before. I dont live in TN but in Indiana or I would help. I dont have any relatives in this cemetery but hate the idea that others do and its a shame it is not better taken care of. If you live close by, maybe a notice on the bulliton board in the local grocery store might work to get volunteers to help clean it up.

I wish you luck.

Sue

I'm ashamed to say that I am a lifelong Memphian, a genealogist and have always called myself intensely interested in cemetery preservation. But I have been involved with mostly those in Mississippi and never even realized what was going on in my own city. I was looking for directions to the Forest Hill Midtown Cemetery, saw the names of the Hollywood and Mt Carmel and read just what you said. I would like to know if there are any family members or just citizens who are interested in trying to organize to correct these disgraces?
