I found your message on Birchfields while I was doing a google search. I have some information that you may be interested in because my GG Grandmother and Grandfather were James and Mary (Birchfield) Farris.
James Farris (1823-1890)and Mary Elizabeth Birchfield (1827-1911) had 9 children: boys- Newton,Joseph,James,Duncan,Jasper and girls: Betty,Nan,Molly,Mattie.
Jasper R. Farris (1862-1944)was my GGrandfather.
Two of James and Mary's sons were Texas Rangers. I verfied this by going to the Tx Ranger Museum in Waco Tx.
I know her grave is in Denton. She was Cherokee Indian but the amount is unclear. The story is that she walked the Trail of Tears from Kentucky to Okla. Also she was able to later get an education and her and James opened the first school house in Denton.
Since Mattie was related to you then you and I are distant relatives.
I got real excited when I saw your post on here, cause I have run into dead ends on this stuff so many times.
I live in New Braunfels Tx. My maiden name is Farris.
Would love to know if you have any further info.
Sincerely, Elaine (Farris) Reed
