Need help on this. We do not know who Jesse Lewis' parents are or Martha Scates'. We cannot find them on the census until 1850 when they're in Laclede, Missouri. They went there in 1849 we believe. If you have any info you can share on these two, please let me know.

1. JESSE LEWIS-1. He was born 1803 in North Carolina, USA. Residence 1850 (District 45,
Laclede, Missouri). He died Bet. 1861–1862 in Pulaski, Missouri, USA.

Notes for Jesse - Jesse Lewis was born in North Carolina but the county there is not known. He married Martha Scates around 1830. He is on the 1850 census of Laclede Co. Mo and the 1860 census of Pulaski Co. MO. All of his known children were born in TN and they moved to Mo in 1849. Shortly after the death of his first wife, Martha Scates, Jesse “went back to where he came from” and married a girl named Joanna. Jesse was age 53 and Joanna was 15. When Jesse’s son William H. saw his father riding home with his new bride (they were riding double on a horse and she was barefooted), he (William) became so angry that he moved out of the house that day. Jesse Lewis is on the 1850 census of Laclede Co. MO, age 47 & b in NC. In the household are his wife Martha (45 b SC), and children William H. (18), Joseph S. (16), Charlotte Ann (10), Nancy Jane (8), George M. Dallas (5), and Martha N. (2). All children were born in TN. In the 1860 census of Pulaski Co. MO, Jesse is age 58 (b in TN), a Millwright, Joanna (age 20 b in MO, in 1870 says born in NC), Ellen age 4, and Naoma age 12. He was a millwright & the post office was listed as DeBruin. Charlotte Ann (Lotty) was living with her sister Mary Eliza and Leonidas Cash in 1860, and Nancy J. with her brother William H. Lewis. I do not know where George Marion Dallas was, but the older children of Jesse Lewis were married and on their own. In 1870, Johanna Lewis, age 31, was listed as a housekeeper in the household of the Isaac Robison family. She was born in NC in this record. In a letter from H. Barlow that I received in the early 70’s, he said, “ I received a letter from Andrew T. Lewis who wrote that his father (Joseph Scates Lewis, Sr.) remembered going on a trip with his father (Jesse Lewis) to Ohio, around the Cincinnati area (another letter from Barlow said it was to Indiana, around Evansville). Andrew also said the father (or Uncle) of Jesse was rather wealthy and wanted Joseph Scates to stay there. He also wrote that Jesse’s mother was a Grigsby and that the Lewis’ lived in Virginia before going to TN.” Family tradition in not only my branch of the Lewis family, but in other branches is that Jesse Lewis’ brother and Martha Scates’ sister married and were the parents of Henry Houston, James Wyatt, and Willis Parker Lewis. The children of these two families were double-cousins.

MARTHA SCATES is the daughter of Unknown Scates. She was born 1805 in Tennessee, USA.
Her death was after 1850 census, died by 1856

married Martha Susan Brandon. They were married on 11 Oct 1871 in Laclede,
Missouri, USA. He died on 05 Oct 1904 in Laclede, Missouri, USA.
5. iv. CHARLOTTE "LOTTIE" ANN LEWIS. She was born on 17 Oct 1839 in
Tennessee, USA. She married Eli Rippy. They were married 1870. She died on
11 May 1905 in Laclede, Missouri, USA.
6. v. NANCY JANE LEWIS. She was born on 07 May 1842 in Tennessee, USA. She
