Surnames: Gage, Barton
I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. Anderson County Constable J.L. GAGE was reported to have been shot, probably fatal, at Palestine while attempted to arrest Mick Barton, Negro and ex-convict. Any information about this case would be appreciated - did the constable die? If so where is he buried? Was BARTON arrested or convicted? The US Census 1880 for Anderson County reports John L. GAGE, born about 1836, Alabama, living with his wife, P.C. GAGE, 40, and children John R., 17, Martin G., 15, Emma F., 13, Mary E, 9, George E., 3 and Jeff Parris, 17.
