Gen Joe Shelby, CSA (Missouri) took his troops to Mexico after the Civil War rather than surrender. I believe he went through Anderson County on the way to Mexico.
Family legend says that my wife's great-grandfather, Frederick George Hook, hid Shelby and his men from the Yankees. We know that Hook lived in Anderson County in 1870 and married Emily Marks there in 1874.
We also know that one of Shelby's men had relatives in Anderson County.
am also searching for a Confederate ancestor who supposedly went with General Sterling Price and General J.O. Shelby to Mexico....James Thaddeus Cearnal also had family in Anderson....his mother died there and two of his sisters married Condray brothers there. There was a newspaper published in Mexico called the Mexican Times...unfortunately it mostly rehashes old battles and has very little information on people. There were two major colonies in Mexico but neither survived the assination of the Emperor Maximillian. General Price and his family returned to St. Louis where he died and Shelby returned to his home in Central Missouri.
