Anderson Co. Civil War Units

My g-grandfather lived in Anderson Co., according to the 1860 Anderson Co. census. According to family information he died 2-3-1863 serving in the CSA. We have no information as to what unit he may served.

Does anyone have any information about any units that may have been formed from Anderson and where I might research the units. Or does anyone know if there, in fact, was any units formed from Anderson Co.? He may have joined in a surrounding county.

Any information will be treasured.

Thanks in advance.
Mary Annis/Annice Walston, TX, b. 1878?

On her first marriage certificate in Gonzales County in 1876, Mary Annice Walston was listed as marrying Lemuel Butler. In the 1900 census, she was listed as Annis and born in 1878 in Texas.

I have a great deal of info on Lemuel, but nothing on "Annice" earlier than her marriage. Does anyone know what happened to the baby "Anise" listed as the second child of Henry Walston (Jr) and Jane? Any information on any of Henry's children by his second wife Jane would be much appreciated

anderson county marriages and death info abt 1870s Robinson Brandon

I am trying to find info on Mary Robinson, who was born 1850 in Jasper County GA, lived in 1860 and 1870 Louisiana, and who disappears from me in records after that. I am hoping to find her marriage, or perhaps even death records.

The family story is that Mary F Robinson came to TX with her brother and sister when they ran away from mean stepfather Allen P. Morris and his two kids James Oliver Morris and Sarah Frances (Fannie) Morris. The mother of the Robinson kids and Morris kids died in 1869 Morehead Parish LA.

Mary's sister Emma C Robinson married John Adam Brandon in 1872 Anderson County by a Methodist circuit minister.

I have this marriage information for Emma Robinson and John Brandon, but am also looking for a scanned copy or photo of original document. Could anyone tell me if that exists and/or where I could get help please?

It was presumed that Emma's midle initial stood C for the mothers maiden name of Calhoun, but that wasnt the mothers maiden name and it is unknown what it stood for. Emma and her husband John Brandon settled in Coryell County (although John may have come to TX first to Cranfil Gap and Turnersville area from Arkansas and earlier from MO.) We believe the three Robinson "children" may have come to Anderson County perhaps to the Fort, first for help or to meet up with a family freind named Dulaney.

John Brandon has brothers including Hugh Brandon and Charles L. Brandon, and a presumed cousin Rufus Lafayette Brandon who all settled in nearby counties in Texas. (None had a wife named Mary!) Hugh is buried in Throckmorton TX, and Charles is unkn burial, probably in Anderson or Hill Co.
There was another brother BEnton who may be aka L. B. Brandon who lived in Comanche County in 1900.

The brother John Walter Robinson ("Walter") lived with Emma and John Brandon in Coryell until mid 1880s. Walter Robinson married Mattie Waggoner and settled nearby Emma & John Brandon in Tehuacana (later Wortham) Texas. I have descendant list for both siblings. Emma & John and descendants are buried in Wortham. Walter & Mattie and their descendants are buried in Mexia Cemetery.

We do not know if Mary Robinson was married or when was deceased.
The story says that the Robinson children came to Texas with or to meet a family friend of the Robinsons named the Delaneys (Dulaneys, Delany, etc.) I have had no luck tracing this surname in connection with any of the Robinsons or Morris, Brandon or Waggoners or other family names.

If she came to Texas with the others it would have been about 1870-1872, and it seems likely she would have married in Texas very soon thereafter, maybe 1871-1874. I have death records for their mother in 1869 LA but no records for a death for Mary Robinson in LA through 1875.

Does anyone have any ideas where I could seek marriage records for multiple counties (Anderson, Coryell, Hill, Bosque, Navarro, Limestone, Freestone...), or that might have identifying elements in their information, like age or next of kin (to weed out the MANY Mary Robinsons?)

All help appreciated. THANK YOU.
Diane

Jeff Gilliland's daughter Mary Josephine Fowler and her husband Vincent lived in Anderson Co., Tx. in early 1900s. Perhaps Jefferson Gilliland had other children in Anderson Co. during this time. The Gillilands and Fowlers lived in Madison Co., Ala. before moving to Tx. Census of 1910 showed them living in Ellis Co., Tx. If you are researching Gillilands in Anderson County, I would like to hear from you.

My maternal grandparents were Richard Lusky Gray and Alice Lucinda Willis Gray. They lived on the southside of the outskirts of Cleveland, Texas across the 2-lane highway from the Magnolia Pumping Station from 1940 until December 1978 when Lusky passed away. My grandmother passed away May 16, 1980. I believe they are buried near Cleveland, Liberty County, Texas but I do not know where. He was born January 25, 1893 at Antrim, Anderson County, Texas. In 1900 he lived with his parents, R. L. and Mary Gray and 7 brothers and sisters in Elkhart, Anderson County. In 1917 when he registered for the Draft, he lived on Route #2 outside of Elkhart. In 1920 he, his wife, and four children lived in Justice Precinct 2 in Anderson County. In 1930 he lived with his wife, and five children in Precinct 7, Montgomery County. If you know anything about this family, please let me know. I will also post this query on the Liberty County Board since they lived in Liberty County in the last 40 years of their lives. Thank you, Linda Robbins

Sister Letty had already married A.C. Smith and they are also on this census.

This Emsley never comes up in Garner forums (though some of his descendants do). I have seen others list him as Archibald Emsley, but I have yet to learn how they came by that because I have only seen him recorded as Emsley. Nor do I find online his father William discussed in connection with his wife and family.

Based on information from a couple of incomplete sources, I began to search and now believe my Nancy is a younger sister of Emsley. One post elsewhere online showed her name as "Narcissa (Nancy)" but the person who posted it would not share any information so I don't know where the Narcissa comes from.

After the 1840 Census, Emsley was someplace in GA long enough for his wife, Malissa, to give birth to three children from 1840-1844. And then two were born @1847 and 1849 in MS—evidence of the trail the family took. Someone gave me Malissa's maiden name as Tinkerly, but I have found no sign of that surname around the Garners; there are a few Tankersley—any info will be appreciated.

I've learned there is a probate file in Winston Co, MS, that states William died 31 January 1845 in GA—but I don't know what county or town—as he was on his way to MS.

Four more daughters: Edna [Henry Preston Morgan], Elizabeth [James H. Hendricks], Sarah [Robert Buckner], and Mary [Elisha Elcanie Thompson], and a son, Thomas [Margaret Louisa Shaw], were married between 1845 and 1851 in Winston Co, MS. Thomas has been mistaken by some to have been the father because he signed the marriage bonds for his sisters.

I have yet to find mother Elizabeth or daughter Nancy on an 1850 Census, although they should be there. Then again, maybe they are on their way to TX to join Emsley, since I know Nancy was there by her marriage in 1852.

After Winston Co, MS, these families move west across the county line into Attala Co, Ms, and Emsley settles in Anderson Co, TX. Emsley and his wife Malissa are buried in the old Palestine cemetery. So is Elizabeth Garner, who died in 1853 and would appear to be the mother as she was born in 1789.

Thomas is later in Anderson Co, TX, near Emsley.

Another brother, (Samuel) Jesse [m. Eliza Ann Parsons dau of James of SC], shows up in Crawford Co, AR.

Sister Elizabeth (Hendricks or Hendrix) later can be found first in Limestone Co, Tx, and then Tarrant Co, TX.

So it would appear that William and Elizabeth are the names of the parents of this family. Online I have seen Elizabeth's last name as Cox linked to different parents [and in one case she was linked to a different spouse]. Then I received information that she is Quaker Elizabeth Cox, daughter of Thomas Cox and Elizabeth Hussey, who was disowned for leaving the faith when she married a William Garner. Unfortunately, the marriage date—14 Feb 1812—for that William Garner and Elizabeth Cox in Randolph Co, NC, does not allow for Emsley’s birth according to various census as follows: 1850 age 43=1807; 1860 age 48=1812 (maybe this one); 1870 age 61=1809; 1880 age 70=1810

One source listed a brother William, which would make ten children, and one post online said the above Quaker Elizabeth and her William Garner had eleven children, but none were named.

In 1840 Census Pickens Co, SC, in addition to William and Emsley, there were only six other Garners listed: James, Jesse, Henry, John Jr, Noah, and Starling. Surely someone has connected William with the others who settled in this northwest corner of South Carolina that became Pickens Co, and I would greatly appreciate help from you Garner experts on this line.

Be assured I am willing to share what I have found thus far and in the future with one and all who may be interested.

Hope to hear from you soon, and thank you,

Lee Simons
lost cemetery near old Fosterville

i am related to the Benjamin Franklin BLOUNT family from old Fosterville in northern Anderson County .. i'm largely inactive in my research these days .. i know the old Padgitt and Blount homes in the hills near old Fosterville were just a few hundred yards apart about a mile east of the highway through old Fostervile .. an old cemetery with many unmarked graves still exists in a little valley between the two old homesites .. i visited the site with a now deceased MILNER relative, Uncle Earl, who grew up when those families still lived in the area and once owned the land on which it is located .. i've since been unable to relocate it .. i'd love to see if any connections or stories are remembered from those days and families (1870-1930) and especially be interested in relocating the cemetery for documentation purposes .. the one marked gravesite remaining at the cemetery was that of young Inda Blount .. the dates are not recalled exactly, but c. 1873 comes to mind ,, she died at about age 7 .. according to Uncle Earl, when he was a child there were 20 or more other tombstones in the cemetery where he used to hunt with my ggfather, Andrew Edgar BLOUNT, "Uncle Eddie" according to Uncle Earl .. all but Inda's tombstone were made of native sandstone which has now either eroded away or sunk into the ground

the tops of several stones were still still visible when i visited it in about 1998, but the video tape i took carefully documenting the site was lost when my camera bag was stolen out of my car over a year later .. back up and keep your tapes in a safe place, y'all .. that video unedited was Ken Burns quality with Uncle Earl generously guiding me through his memories and me sharing stories remembered from my grandmother's telling .. it became a casualty of war when stolen at the Arkansas Post National Monument, a Civil War battleground and historic site, during the winter of 2001 or 2002

we have a Yahoo group with many further details, if this rings any bells, at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BrittonBlount/

Church History and Records book

In 2004, the First Presbyterian Church of Crockett, TX, celebrated is 150th anniversary. As a part of the celebration, the Anniversary Committee proposed a project of copying and transcribing the old church records for publication. As time went on, more and more records and information were discovered, and finally, THE BOOK has gone to the printer – a 3-volume set, hardback, 1760+ pages, every-name indexed. There are registers, pastoral notes, marriages, baptisms, funerals, church minutes, and other records from the First Presbyterian Church and from over 47 small churches, most no longer in existence, in Houston County and surrounding counties. It provides a glimpse into the life of early East Texas, as well documenting many events in the lives of its residents, both Presbyterians and other denominations.
PRESBYTERIANS OF HOUSTON COUNTY AND BEYOND: CHURCH RECORDS AND DOCUMENTS FROM 1838 TO 2004, compiled and edited by Bettie W. Sarver and Rev. Jim Tom Ainsworth, is being printed in a limited quantity and will sell for $165.00 (plus $11.00 shipping, if necessary) per set. For information about the book or about ordering, please contact Bettie Sarver at bwsarver@gmail.com or Jim Ainsworth at jtains@nctv.com.

Sellers left the First Baptist Church in Abilene for a calling to Palestine (church unknown). Rev. Sellers (to the best of my knowledge) was born in Tennessee in 1845 and was married to Eugenia Howard Blanton. I also known that Rev. Sellers was ministering in Luling, Caldwell Co., Texas in the 1881 timeframe (recording in the Gonzales Inquirer newspaper). The Sellers had at least one son, Eugene Veazey Sellers, born in LaGrange, Texas - my husband's grandfather. Trying to find any information on Rev. and Mrs. Sellers (dod, place of burial, etc.), any information on his ministry in Palestine, and any information on other children. Thank you in advance for any help!!!

If you have family in Dabbs Cemetery, we are having a workday and a Lunch on the ground on Saturday Sept. 15, 2007. We usually start about 8:00 a.m. and work till lunch at noon. Bring a covered dish or just bring yourself....... JUST COME!

We are trying to put a book together on the persons buried in the Cemetery. If you have a picture of that person, or a bible record that we could pin down dates and children with. Please bring it! I will have a computer with a scanner to scan the information. It will be handed right back to you. This book will be put out and proceeds will be for the upkeep of the cemetery. Plus I intend to start a newsletter for the "cemetery association" for the scoop on everything that is going on with everyone associated with the cemetery.

Thanks!!

Ginger Ramsey Davis
Samuel D. Hardin/en/ing b. August 1822 TN/to TX by 1850

Seeking information about Samuel D. Hardin/en/ing b. August, 1822 in TN. By 1850 he was in Anderson County, TX in the household of James & Medlina (Melinda?) Peters/Pettus. In this same household was a female Hardin, Margaret R. or B. aged 59. I guess this lady to be Samuel's mother and James Peters/Pettus to be a brother-in-law.
1860 census he was still in Anderson County, TX with wife Catherine(possibly Mosley)b. ca 1832 in TN, along with children Francis b. 1852, Dora C. b. 1853, James B. b. 1857, Samuel D. b.1860. Daughter Dora married Atlas Dowd Parsons on December 31, 1876 in Erath County, TX. They had 2 sons, John b. 1877 and Charles Atlas b. April, 1880. Dora died April 4, 1880.
He is found on the 1870 census in Anderson County, TX with wife Mary Isabelle Wylie b. August 5, 1853, whom he married January 27, 1865. Their children shown were Henry b. 1865 and James b. 1869. Mary Isabelle died December 31, 1872 in Erath County, TX.
The 1880 and 1900 census puts him in Erath County, TX with yet another wife, Jemima Jane Gailey b. February, 1858. They had the following children with them: George E. b. 1875, Margaret P. b. 1877, Nellie M. b. March, 1880, Pearl b. August, 1884, Willie b. June, 1887, Annie b. September, 1889, Thomas b. November, 1892. Jemima died January 23, 1906. Apparently Samuel D. died between 1900-1910 census times probably in Erath County, TX.
I found in the 1840 census of Bedford County, TN a Margaret Hardin as head of household along with a daughter. The ages fit for the Margaret and Medlina (Melinda?) shown on the 1850 Anderson County, TX census in the James Peters/Pettus household.
Have not been able to locate the children of Samuel D. & Catherine, in any 1870 census.
Was the Catherine who Samuel D. married the daughter of John Mosley shown on the 1850 census a few households away from where S. D. was living?
I am writing a biographical chapter for a new book on Southern Civil War correspondents. I am trying to find biographical information (including a date of death) on R. R. Gilbert--full name Rennessaier Reed Gilbert. He wrote for the Houston Tri-Weekly Telegraph during the war and Texas Siftings (and perhaps others) after the war. Genealogical searches show him to have lived in Palestine in 1876 and 1880, but since the 1890 census burned and he falls through the cracks of death records, I cannot locate a date of death. His wife is listed as a widow living in Austin by 1900. I am looking for a date of death, personal papers, etc. Anything that sheds further light on him as a person. Many thanks for any help.

This man's name is also found in early Nacogdoches land records along with that of a James McDonald. Both men share same name as McDonalds who came from Tennessee to Texas ca 1838. Can anyone provide additional information on William S. McDonald? Thanks.

Robert & Nancy Cannon

Does anyone happen to have copies of the wills & probates for Robert & Nancy Cannon? Robert was born abt 1774-75 in South Carolina & died about 1863 in Houston County, Texas. Found one site that mentioned a will/probate for Cannon, Robert N.C.M. (whatever that means) in File --- Page 43, 43A. Nancy was born about 1785 in South Carolina & died around 1848 in Anderson County, Texas. The site that mentioned Robert also mentioned Cannon, Nancy: File 148, Pg 66. Another site mentioned an entry for her in the Probate Court Records for Anderson County dated June 1856. If anyone has the records & are willing to share, I would certainly appreciate it! If not, would anyone know where I could write for the records and the approximate cost?

You can reach me at panhandlekid@yahoo.com if you like. Any help or hints will be greatly appreciated! Thanks a bunch!

Sheryl H
OK

Anderson County Death Records

I'm trying to find a death record for someone who died in Anderson County in 1919. The Texas Vital Records doesn't have a record. Does anyone know if there are any death records held locally by the city or county or funeral homes for Anderson County?

Descendants of Abner (1763-1839 ) & Miles Chappell (1790-1887)

I am researching the my line of descendants of Miles Chappell, b. 1790 in Amelia, Virginia & d.1887 in Fayette, Alabama. His daughter Mary Chappell married Oliver P. Davis in Fayette in 1838 and they moved to Anderson Co., TX around 1849. This Davis family appears on the 1850 Census. Mary Chappell's sister Palatine P Chappell married John Collier Freeman and the Davis & Freeman families are living near each other in the 1850 Anderson County census. I assume Mary Chappell Davis must have died in Anderson Co. since her husband and children are back in Fayette, AL in the 1860 Census without her and their children are scattered among the Davis and Chappell relatives. The Freeman family remained in Anderson Co. however. Any suggestions on where I might research further in Anderson Co. would be appreciated. I am planning trip there in the next couple of months. Thank you in advance.
