Dyson Nickle of Wells, Cherokee County, will be the guest speaker at the 5 PM, Monday, August 20, meeting of the Angelina County Genealogical Society in the Community Meeting Room of Kurth Memorial Library, 706 Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904. His program presentation, Researching Confederate Civil War Veterans, is expected to begin at about 5:45 PM and conclude by 6:30 PM.
The program presentation will be proceeded by the annual ACGS indoor (finger foods) picnic and Show and Tell reports from individual members. Members are asked to sign up in the genealogy room at the library in person, by phone, or e-mail on the picnic food list and/or the Show and Tell List. Members are asked to begin arriving with food items at about 4:30 PM and to enjoy a social time until the regular meeting time. This will give the Hospitality Committee time to have the picnic tables set up by the 5 PM regular meeting time.
Mr. Nickle, a former public school history teacher, received a B. A. Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches and earned his Master’s Degree in History from SFASU in 2006. Mr. Nickle is currently employed as an academic advisor in the SFASU Admissions Department. Mr. Nickle, often accompanied by his spouse and four children, has been participating in Civil War re-enactment events in and out of the state of Texas for about three decades. Mr. Dyson portrays members of mounted Confederate Cavalry units complete with horses. Mr. Dyson currently serves as the Commander of the newly formed Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp in Lufkin. The name of the new camp is Lone Star Defenders, Company C, 3rd Texas Cavalry.
The ACGS executive board will meet briefly at 4 PM in the Community of Kurth Memorial Library prior to the regular society meeting and program. All executive board meetings are open to the society membership and all society meetings are open to the public.
Free individual genealogical research help is available on the 3rd Monday of each month (except January and December) from 1-4 PM in the Ora McMullen Genealogy Room, Kurth Memorial Library, 706 Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas, 75904, 1-936-630-0563, provided by members of the Angelina County Genealogical Society. The program for the Monday, September 17, 2012, ACGS meeting will be presented by Debbie Parker Wayne of Cushing, a professional genealogist, and ACGS member, on the latest information on DNA testing and its use in genealogical research.
