Cornelius Smith, a native of Ireland, came to Texas with his wife, Sarah Pate, from Louisiana where the two oldest children Julia and Elizabeth were born. The family lived near Goliad a while until it was safe from Indians in Atascosa Co. Thomas was their first child born in Texas in Guadalupe Co. where the other Pate family members of the group were at the time. Four Pate sisters, Matilda, Sarah, Mary Louise, and Amy, and one brother, Joseph, were in the group. Cornelius and Sarah had 8 children: Julia, Elizabeth, Thomas, William, Ada, Sidney (Bud), Robert (Bob), and Lucretia. I am descended from Julia and her first husband, Daniel Sedgwick; their daughter, Mary, married W. L. Williams; one of their sons, Samuel Whitsett, was my father. I will be glad to hear from other descendants and share information, but my file has not yet been entered into the computer. I also am researching the Pate family, but have just gotten started entering that information. I will have to share by typing information to you onto email. There is some information on the family in the Atascosa Co. History Book, and I have additional information. Let me hear from you. Joyce
