Designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in Texas Birth Index

Many people have been confused by the designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in the Father's Name Field in the Texas Birth Index.

I emailed the Texas Department of State Health Services and according to them:

This designation is actually **DEATH FILE NUMBER EXISTS***, and it means that the baby was deceased. At the time that the birth certificate was data entered, the only way to make the notation in the electronic record that the baby was deceased was to enter this in the father’s name fields. The actual birth certificate will show the name of the father if that information was available, and the birth certificate will be stamped "DECEASED."

This format is outdated, however, and no longer used.

Note: Several people have pointed out to me that Texas has made mistakes with this designation, so use good judgment and further research when you see this designation in the Index.

Thank you so much for your reply. I'll agree with the stinker part and leave it at that:) I have some geneology charts going back to Jared Ellison through Robert's generation. I gave him some information many years ago about our spouses and children. I don't remember sending any pictures, but I visited the Lake Jackson Historical Society while I was there and there were some books in a back room with our pictures in them - which was a bit surreal. I never received any pictures or anything else after the initial information, though, so I'm not sure where they may be.
I have read anything I could find on family members and have found it pretty interesting stuff. I would appreciate anything you could send.

Again, thanks for the reply, and it's good to hear from you.

kattypat1020@yahoo.com

Kathy it's so nice to hear from you. Your dad was my father's cousin, but in his later years Bob and I became friends as well as cousins. He was a stinker in some ways, but I'm not sure that's not a Cashon trate, and he shared a lot of stories with me about the Cashon family. I shared my research with him and with genealogy as a common interest we had a close friendship.

Before your dad died he sent me all his work on your grandmother's family, and some other things as well. He had planned to send me his pictures as well, but the lady he left them with never sent them though I offered to pay for the shipping. I've lost track of her now. I had hoped she might have sent them to you instead as some of the old photos shoul not be lost to the family.

Getting to wordy here. But I am glad to hear from you. Finally went back on Abner Jackson's family. Neat that you lived there. When we were down there it seemed like a nice area.

My email address is

valette@juno.com

And I will be happy to share anything you would like to have.
I'm not sure if you still keep up with this, but I'll give it a try. My name is Kathy Patrick (Cashon). I'm the youngest daughter of Arthur & Lessie's son Robert. My parents divorced when I was young, and my siblings and I were raised in Alabama. I was given some family history information a few years back and have enjoyed reading it. My husband and I lived in Lake Jackson for a short time back in 2005, but are back in Alabama now. It was great to see the picture.

I am trying to find information on Barbara A. Curry. She lived in Brazoria County in 1990, not sure if she was born there or not. The only info that I have is her name, that she was possibly born in 1935 maybe in Texas. I do know that she was married to my father, Robert E Parker, Jr. on Nov 1, 1990.They were married and lived in Brazoria County, Liverpool, Tx. My father died there on May 7, 2001. I have been able to track down his Death Certificate (have ordered it) but I am not able to find an obit or any other information. If anyone has info on either or both of these people, I would really appreicate any help. Thanks in advance.

Re: James Edward McKay (1909-1969)

Cemetery transcriptions are seldom complete or accurate for many reasons

Texas Death Index:
James Mckay, died 24 Dec 1969, death county: Bell.
A Death Certificate identifies where a person was living when they died, not necessarily where they were living. DC's are mostly correct about location of burial...but not always. Does the DC identify the funeral home? He also "might" have been living in Bell, if there was a marriage separation, he had family in Bell, visiting a hospital for special treatment, etc.

The Social Security Death Index:
James McKay, born 7 Jan 1909, died Dec 1969, "last residence:" Cameron, Milam Co, TX.
---The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where a person actually lived or died. The Social Security Administration calls it simply the "home of record," and possibly the address where correspondence by the SSA was sent. It is not necessarily where any benefit was paid to the person, survivor, or the lumpsum death benefit (in years past, it was paid to anyone paying burial expenses, family member, funeral home, city/county, attorney; today, a living spouse). It is sometimes the location where the notification of death was sent to the SSA, sometimes where the lump sum death benefit was sent.

An obituary is NOT necessarily found where a person was living. The location of an obit depends on MANY factors: Was the person living in another area at a hospital/senior facility? Where was the family living, sometimes that is where the obit is found. Was the person living in the State prison on the other side of the State? Since this person was 60 years of age, there might NOT be ANY obituary. It depends on living family members, financial considerations, etc.

I find five posted family trees that identify James E. Mckay, but none identify a wife or date of death.

Etta is buried in the Oak Park Cemetery, Alvin:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=mc...;
She was born in 1909, died Oct 5, 1995 (26 years after James). Cemetery records indicate a son, Earl Dannar (1926-1998); and, a former(?) husband Clarence Richard Dannar (1902-1970) (identified as being separated or divorced). Her stone shows the Froberg Funeral Home as the attending service provider. I'd suggest contacting them to see what records they may have (opening of grave/sharing with, etc.).
--Per 1940 Census, Clarence and Etta had six children.
--Per family trees, Etta died in Rogers, Bell County, TX.
--Per informant on the DC of Clarence, his daughter, Lillie Lockaboy, he was buried in the Roberts Cemetery, Troy, Texas (same as records on findagrave). This DC shows the date and signature of the local Registrar. A Registrar is a county position for a person that reviews DC's and prepares burial permits. If a person is to be moved from one jurisdiction to another, the Registrar prepares a transfer permit, then the local Registrar in the new location completes the burial permit. I would suggest contacting Bell County and ask for the Bell County Registrar. They "might" have records from 1969 (although I doubt it), but they might be able to identify location of the archives. I would do the same in Brazoria County.

The phone number, 281-388-4257, is to the Alvin City Clerk's office. This office "might" be for the local Registrar. I have found many clerk's offices not having correct burial records. I recently worked a couple of researches for clerks attempting to identify information on names they had in records. One, in Montana, had a stone, but I found the remains in Washington State. The deceased wanted a cenotaph on the grave of a school friend.

Courtesy response! I'm not the original poster or related! Recommend you consider a more "likely candidate"? That was J. P. Owen son of Thomas J. Owen and Emily Allen. They lived in Barren, KY which is located in the south central part of the state. That's also where the White family lived. Jefferson Owen son of David and Sarah lived in Jessamine, KY. That's northeast of Barren and, on the map, appears to be quite a distance to travel for romance? All those mountains would have influenced me to find someone locally!(lol) View census records: 1850 KY-Barren-Division 1-Image 32, 1860 KY-Barren-District 2-Image 129, and 1870 KY-Barren-Glasgow Junction-Image 5. My candidate enumerated as J. P. in 1860 and Porter in 1870. Jeff P. Owen wed C. M. White, 13 Oct 1880, in Barren, KY. His mother's maiden name found on death certificate of brother Wesley (24 Sep 1839 - 27 Sep 1916). Makes sense?

Hi, Somewhere I saw that Jefferson's Father is David Owen, and his mother is Sarah (didn't have her maiden name).

I've been working on family tree on my husbands side, he is a descendent of Katie Beatrice Owen (grandaugher of Jefferson).

Let me know if you've gotten any new info on this.. since I see this message is really old :)

Thanks.

WILLIAM ROWE of Brazoria County, 1858 -1863

I am researching the William Rowe mentioned above who came to Brazoria County around 1858 and died there, leaving a will, in 1863. He was my 4 times great grandfather and Shadrack Rowe, who lived nearby, was my 4 times great grand uncle. They were both planters, although William's name is not listed on any of the land records that I have found.

I am most interested in where he would have been buried. When the Shadrack Rowe family sold their land to the McNeill family in 1866, they sold all but two acres containing the Cedar Lake church and cemetery. I am assuming my ancestor may be buried there but can find no evidence of that fact.

I have permission from the present owner of the land to visit the cemetery, but was wondering if anyone had any other information about who, besides the known persons listed in the TXGen database and in the published books, might also be buried in the Cedar Lake cemetery. Family history, anecdotal evidence, anything lending a clue would be most appreciated.

And as an aside, James Smith and Jamie Murray at the Brazoria Historical Museum library are fantastic. They helped me over the weekend to find my ancestor's last records than I would have ever imagined possible.

Sorry for any confusion! Are you seeking info on Martha's siblings? There were many, at least eighteen from three wives of John C. R. Lockhart. "Be careful what you wish for" was my light-hearted caution about the effort needed to research such a large brood. Clearly define your objective and let's get started? OPTION 1: Martha's siblings. OPTION 2: Martha's descendants.

My grandfather was Arthur Fulton Cashon (his wife Lessie Margaret Robertson)
For those of you interested in the Cashon family I have a real treat. On July 1, 1917 there was a family reunion at the 'Big House' (John Franklin Cashon's house). I believe the Big House was located near Prosper, TX. As you can see James Edgar and Asenath are seated on the righ-side of the photograph with my grandpa (10 yrs old) sitting at their feet. You may find others in your tree as well. Enjoy!

Notes: Asenath passed March 13, 1920 about three years after this photo was taken.
The oldest person in the photo is Eliza Jane (Grimes) Dudley b.1838. She is 82 years old in the photo and passed six years later.

Hello,

I am searching for any info on the Bass family, early settlers in the Brazoria County area. Edward and Ann (also Anna or Anne) Bass settled on the Brazos River in 1830 and were supposed to have been living in the town of Velasco by 1835-36.

According to the census records of his daughters, Edward was born in Tennessee. I do not know precisely when he died, but it should be between the late 1830s and mid 1840s.

Ann (maiden name unknown) was born in 1812 in North Carolina and dies in Galveston in 1898.

I am hoping to find any early records about this couple from the time they lived in Brazoria County/Velasco. I have been on the hunt for this family for about 4 years now, but since I'm confined to internet research, it's been slow going.

Just FYI,

The family relocates to Houston in (I believe) the mid to late 1830s, and Ann ends up moving to Galveston by 1868.

They have two daughters, Mary Jane b. 1836 in Houston and Sarah Anne b. approx 1838.

Thanks in advance for any help and/or suggestions,
Liz Ortel

Laura, I am a member of the Old Columbia Cemetery. We met last night and plan a marking with a Texas Historical Marker for Byrd Lockhart. We think he is buried next to Capt. Brown. Would like to hear from you and are you related to Byrd Lockhart. tissie@quikheal.com

Nancy, I am a member of the Old Columbia Cemetery which was given to Columbia by the wife of Josiah H. Bell. We met last night and plan to place a Texas Historical Marker at his gravesite (which is not marked) beside Captain Brown. We would love input from the neices and nephews of Lockhart. Maybe the family would like to place a grave stone at his site. We just had a new tombstone laid for Mary Bell, wife of Josiah and his family members participated in his ceremony. Where do you live? tissie@quikheal.com

I am a member of the Old Columbia Cemetery in West Columbia, Texas. Our group is planning a Texas Historical Marker for Byrd Lockhart to be placed in the area that we believe he is buried, next to Brown. We would love input from neices and nephews on this marking and certainly want you to be involved. tissie@quikheal.com

Dene Harper was my grandmother, real name Sidena. You are correct in that her maiden name was Menges. Besides Charlotte and Ruth, she had a daughter Florene (m. Joe C. Smith) and a son, Clyde, who was my father. They moved to Texas from Ohio in 1914, when my father was 2 years old. I would like to know more about her relatives.
