My father, Willie E. Malone was born May 10, 1913 in Texas and I think his father's name was Charles (Charlie) Benton Malone. I am looking for Willie's parents and grandparents. I think there are some relatives named Cockerhams. I know that someone in Texas was working on a Family Tree, but I understand she died before she finished. I have not heard from anyone in the last few years regarding that tree.

Howdy,

I realize this is a longshot but I am seeking any information on my Grandfather's time living in the Pampa and Panhandle areas. His name is Burton Owen Gentry (1890-1976). I know he built fences north of Pampa around 1917 (WWI draft card) and through old photos and census' he farmed in the area. Two of my uncles graduated from Panhandle High School in '39. My Father was born in Amarillo in 1931 and remembers living at an old place known as the " Boker Place", and later moving into Panhandle. Unfortunately he doesn't remember exact locations having left the area in 1943. I will be traveling with him and had hoped to suprise him by taking him back to the Panhandle. Thanks,

Wendell

My genealogy research has led me to Carson County. A distant ancestor is buried there. Sarah A. Dickson was last known to live in Panhandle in 1930. Her husband John Dickson was last shown in the 1920 census. They had a son named Lonnie and a daughter named Maude who may have married a Kelley.

I am seeking tombstone inscriptions. I do not know the name of a cemetery where they might be buried.

I would also be interested in photo's. We lived there in '51 and our house was completely destroyed by the tornado. My mother had a set of silverware that was scattered all over the surrounding country side. She and Daddy put ad's in the paper and EVERY piece of silverware was finaly recovered. Pieces were sent from miles away.

I was only 5 years old but remember my family (Dad, Mom, Brother and me) sitting at the table when Mother said we should take a drive and look at the clouds. My older brother wanted to stay there and finish his piece of pie but Mother wouldn't let him. As we were backing out of the driveway the twister touched down and headed straight for us. Daddy drove away on the road and we could see it swirling and picking up debris as it chased us. Years later, Daddy told us he had the car floor boarded and we were only going about 30 MPH.

When we came back after it passed we found our house gone, but the one next door to us didn't even have a broken window.

Hey there I believe I saw your family on Ancestry I have been in touch with Barb and Sharon of Montana. My grgrandfather Franklin H Rowe was the elder brother of (Jesse Cicero Martin s/o William Hogan Martin b.Ga and Mary Ann Garvin)second wife Martha Jane Rowe d/o(Eliel Rowe and Martha Ann America White)Jesse and Martha married 1880 in Nacogdoches Co.The Neels were neighbors of the Rowe family and a Rowe daughter Minerva also married Thomas Neel but died in childbirth.Jesse I believe was married first to Mary Elizabeth Neel 1871 a d/o Daniel Neel They went back to Decater Ms and according to the Neel family had a daughter I believe that Sarah Matilda Martin was their daughter someone in the Nunally family has her brothers named as Henry,Samuel and Jesse and James so that seems to point to that conclusion. In the 1900 Fisher Co census Jesse and Martha are listed as having children Henry Eliel,Jesse Samuel,Early,James Monroe,Ida J.,and Arthur.I have found the three death certificates for Henry and James on Family Search and for Jesse on Footnote.I don't know what happened to Ida and Arthur. I heard that Sharon had some pics of these boys and have asked to see them as they would be my grfather Joseph Taylor Rowe's cousins have not heard as to the origins of those pics but if they came from the Nunally family that should point to Sarah as having been the daughter of Jesse Cicero and Mary Neel as that is the only first wife Jesse had I think that Sarah Matilda was born in 1872 why she was not listed with the Neel family and Jesse in the 1880 census for Nacogdoches Co I don't know.I am having the same problem as two of the Rowe daughters died after childbirth Mary and Minerva one of them left a living child as I found a Mary Ragsdale as a heir when I did research at the courthouse in Nacogdoches but no child found on the 1880 census, the younger Eliel Rowe Jr. bought their shares and Martha and Jesse were in Adobe Walls in 1901.I think the William H. Martin family is well documented my email is jryellott@centurytel.net if you need to contact me JoAnn

I have a picture of your grandparents Edwin and Gelanah, and I have traced Gelanah's family to the 1760's in Virginia, but I can't get further back on the Bender side that Edwin. I remember Jesse visiting my family in Colorado a few times. He always drove a Cadilac and brought a watermelon. My e-mail address is gary.bender@roadrunner.com. Please contact me and we can share some information. By the way, do you know if we are related to another Jesse David Bender who was in Jackson County Kansas and farmed in the Texas panhandle. He was about 20 years older the our uncle (grand uncle in my case)?
Gary

Those markers always got moved or stored when the highway department widened the road. Some end up at courthouses.
Now we have to start looking at libraries!

Thank you thank you! A picture would be great. Can we have a closeup and one of the area, so we can see the library and the tree? Thanks again!!! First marker I've heard of that had a tree planted just for it. that's nice. If you could find any photos of the tree planting we can include that too!

This marker is now on the grounds of the Carson County Library at 401 Main St in Panhandle. I am remembering that it was moved to this location in 1986 but not sure about that. The librarian is looking for more information about it. A pecan tree was planted next to the marker to provide shade -- and it's now big enough to do that. I'll take a picture for you if you like......Louise

Perhaps you would share those clippings with the Carson County Square House Museum and the Carson County Historical Commission? There is an on-going project to tape interviews with county veterans of World War II and the Korean War at this time and your clippings might contribute to that effort. The email address for the Museum is
Director@squarehousemuseum.org

Thanks......

Does anyone know where the Carson County Centennial marker is? It was erected in 1936, supposedly 2.5 miles NE of Panhandle on Hiway 60, but later info says it was moved to the courthouse grounds. The county judge says it has never been at the courthouse. :(

I am attaching a photo of one, so you will know what to look for. They are about 30" tall, granite base, bronze Texas star on the front, bronze plaque on the top.

Thanks,
Sarah Reveley
http://www.picturetrail.com/neglected_tx_centennial

Instead of Groom Texas, I wonder if the town could have been Graham Texas in Young Co., south of Wichita Falls which would be almost due south of Enid OK. If you could find out which railroad he was working for, that might give you some clues as to the town location. I believe the Rock Island RR went through Groom, The Handbook of Texas reports "Graham was incorporated sometime before 1900. In 1903 service of the Chicago, Rock Island and Texas line from Fort Worth began, and in the 1920s Graham was connected to Breckenridge and Cisco by the Wichita Falls and Southern line" http://www.tshaonline.org/.

I don't think that Groom had a newspaper until around 1926 or later so the story wouldn't have been reported at the time of the disappearance.

Yes , this is the same man. He was first married to Lillie
Sturgeon. They had one child, Sylva or Sylvia... they divorced about 1914? and he married Margaret Cecil Ruth Babb. Her parents, Dr. John Charles Babb and Nannie Garland
Hubbard Babb lived at Enid, Okla.

Our story always centers around Sylvester's disappearance at Grooms abt. 28 Sept 1919.. and Sylvester's wife and children being taken back to Enid to her parents where they
raised the children.. the kids are even shown as Babb in the 1930 census and they were always told that their father
had killed someone and ran off , never to be seen again.
My side of the family were named Wymer and they lived in
the area of Woods county during that time and later went
to Protection, kansas where they lived out their lives.
It's an old tragic family story, never proven but known to be real.
Wendell H.
I checked the death records for Texas on Charlie Babb and Sylvester Wimer, but could find nothing of use.
sounds confusing enough, but, I came across a marriage with Sylvester Layman Wimer married to a Lillie Sturgeon. Could this be the same man? I could not find a death or death place for Sylvester, but this info states he died in Ok. I thought you might want to compare the info.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?P...

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/h/a/David-J-Cha...

http://www.noktree.com/individual/57725.html

http://boards.ancestry.myfamily.com/localities.northam.usa.s...

http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=115&amp...

http://genforum.genealogy.com/weimer/messages/772.html

This shows Rosella Wimer with Sylvester in the 1900 Ok Census.
Sylvester WIMER and Charlie BABB in 1919 Groom, Texas

My grandfather was Levi C. Wymer, a half brother to Sylvester
Wimer who lived with his wife, Margaret Cecil Babb Wimer and two small childen at Groom, Texas way back in Sept 1919. Sylvester was supposed to be working for the railroad. The actual date of disappearance is 28-29th Sept
1919 at Groom, Texas.
One story we have is that a brother to Margaret borrowed
money from the bank using Sylvester's home for collateral and Sylvester confronted him about it. A fight ensued and
Charlie killed him with an axe handle and later threw his
body in a ravine somewhere perhaps near Groom. So also
i would like to know if there has been any unknown bodies
found that might be identified as him since that time..
it has been 90 years and all of these people have passed on
years ago but this is a known family story so it could be
very well true.

Sylvester took his sister and her children back to Enid, Okla
to their parents within a few days and the children were raised by the grandparents, Dr. John Charles Babb and his
wife, Nannie Garland Hubbar Babb. Margaret, the now widow
of Sylvester gave birth to a son, Max Sylvester, on
1 April 1920 at Enid. Margaret later disappeared herself and was found years later living in Harvey, Louianna using
the name Ruth Dumas. When confronted by her children, she
would go into hysterics and deny everything..

Stories were told to the children that their father had run
off somewhere because he had killed a man.. of course, that wasn't true.

Can anyone verify the story that could have been printed in
the newspaper at Groom during that time?
Anyway, I thank anyone who can provide more information.
Wendell H. Melrose
wendelmelrose@earthlink.net

My research confirms that submitted by Paula. In addition, you and maryhanson55 have different Josiah Harpers. Josiah Harper that fathered Turner J. (father of Myrtle, Bettie, and Lora) married Mary F. Wison 5 Sep 1866 in Smith County, TN. The other Josiah Harper had expired prior to this event. Slight correction? Their stepfather was, correctly named, Oscar Reese Beddingfield (6 Oct 1878 - 25 Oct 1862). I am not related!

Somenina3- The only thing I know about my dad working at Palo Duro Canyon is that he worked for an organization he referred to as NYA. I have learned that this was "National Youth Administration" and that they paid young men to perform things like building, clearing away brush and small trees, paving roads.

Nancy

It is blurry when I enlarge it, too. It was taken in Canyon, Texas about 1942 or 1943. My mother attended West Texas College (as it was known then) and my Dad worked in Palo Duro canyon. This was the only photo I found of "Bill Teter."
