Would like to communicate with anyone who has a family story about the murder of Ruth Vaughan, wife of Henry Vaughan, in the Aberdeen Community in July, 1930. Henry Vaughan accused a young black hired hand, Jesse Lee Washington, of beating his wife to death with a pipe. According to the newspaper account, Sheriff Claude McKinney and Judge Luther Gribble interrogated Washington and got a confession from him. A change of venue moved the trial to Roberts County where the accused was tried, convicted and sentenced to death in the electric chair in a one-day trial. Two years later Henry Vaughan committed suicide when he drank a bottle of poison in a San Antonio alley. My father told me many years ago that it was widely believed that Henry killed his wife and pinned the murder on Jesse Lee. Both Ruth and Henry are buried in the Shamrock Cemetery bside Henry's prominent father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Vaughan.
