I have only a remote connection to the Asa Townsend Family. Asa Leonard Townsend (son of Asa Sr.) was the father of a Sallie E.P. Townsend who married Rebel Lee Overbay. Rebel Lee was the son of Dr. Henry P. Overbay and Penina Henderson. Henderson is my maiden name and Penina's father, Thomas Jordan Henderson, was my gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather. He's buried in Clear Creek Cemetery in Oakland, Colorado County, Texas. The children of Rebel Lee Overbay and Sallie Townsend would be my first cousins, 4x removed. But, that's about as close I get to that interesting family. :)

PS. Since I took the time to type this out in the email I sent to you earlier, I thought I would go ahead and post these names/dates here in case anyone else wanted them.

These were obtained from www.FamilySearch.org but, it's just a listing/index whereas the records I have on microfilm are copies of the actual records with signatures, etc. But here are the records found for surnames Guinn and Landrum.

BTW, Mary Frances Brattock/Braddock might be on my family tree as well. I haven't looked to see yet but, Spicer Christopher Braddock married Lillian Martha Henderson in Colorado County in 1904. He had been in Nassau County, Florida before he came to Texas shortly before their marriage. I believe he had been married previously as well.

Anyway, here is the list for Landrum:

1. Louisa C. Landrum and Samel J. Stapelton on July 8, 1868
2. Maurnring Landrum and Edward Brewbry on December 27, 1881
3. Annie J Landrum and J.W. Blackburn on October 2, 1879
4. Mary Landrum and Alex Jones on January 2, 1883

For surname Guinn there were these:

1. Lucy A Guinn and Edward Wilkinson on December 7, 1875
2. James F. Guinn and Mary Frances Brattock (or Braddock?) on September 6, 1880
3. Sarah E. Guinn and James A. McCleod on December 22, 1870
4. E.J. Guinn and Peter Rouche on July 29, 1872
5. Mary Guinn and Grayton Harbert on December 20, 1888
6. Dartha Guinn and T.H. Morton on December 27, 1876
7. S.L. Guinn and Lexie A. Loggins on November 6, 1878

I would like any information about the Hahns and the Hahn Ranch in Wharton County, Texas. My gr-gr-grandfather Gideon Wiginton was the postmaster from 1897-1919 in what was once called Hahn Prairie, Texas located about 11 miles from El Campo. I'm trying to learn more about how Hahn became a little town and the families who lived there, etc.

I have located two people so far who have photos of the old school, post office, store and community center. I have done extensive research on everyone (120 and counting) buried in the Hahn Cemetery. I've also begun researching the 40+ surnames who are buried in Hahn and the 20+ maiden names I have found.

Many people from the Frels area as well as the Oakland, Colorado County area moved to Hahn around 1900. In fact, the Clear Creek Cemetery in Colorado County and Hahn Cemetery in Wharton County can almost be considered "Sister Cemeteries". There are so many connections!

Any information on people from Hahn would be greatly appreciated!

I work next to the State Capital as well as the State Archives Library here in Austin. I special requested through inter-library loan the Colorado County Marriage Records, which are normally housed at Baylor University. They arrived today! And I have them until March 31, 2013. They start in 1866 and go through at least 1900, I think.

I just wanted to put it out there for anyone needing marriage records, I'd be happy to search for you and make you digital copies to email. :)

I'm looking for several myself, including the surnames: Henderson, Terry, Corder, Braddock, Farrell, Overbay, Jenkins, Rutledge, and Lamkin.

I can't help on Stephen Pierson. John Edward Pearsall purchased 600 acres in Colorado County on July 4, 1855. As evidenced by several records, the only slave names I have found are:
1. A slave Murtiper whom Elizabeth James Pearsall (mother of John Edward Pearsall) asked John Pearsall not to sell any of his Murtiper’s family (Letter written in 1828).
2. John Pearsall and Elizabeth James had two children. Alice Pearsall and John Edward Pearsall. Source: Will of Alice James (mother of Elizabeth), Will Book A&B, page 305, will dated May 1, 1832, probated Sep 1835, New Hanover County, NC. Mentions slaves to daughter Elizabeth, and a codicil dated June 9, 1835 mentions to daughter Elizabeth, slaves Sally and Margaret.
3. Julia. Elizabeth James Pearsall, (the mother of John Edward Pearsall) of Fayette County, Tennesse, gave power of attorney to Benjamin S. Tatum “to sell her Negro woman Julia and her child or children (if she has any living)” . This power of attorney is on file in the Pender County Historical Society Pearsall file in Burgaw, NC.
4. Violett, slave of J. E. Pearsall (30, female, black, born in North Carolina, farm hand, died suddenly in December when a tree accidently fell on her. This from http://www.coloradocountyhistory.org/slavedeaths1860.htm

Stephen Pierson was born circa 1825 in N. C. and could perhaps have been one of the unnamed slaves mentioned in the will of Alice James to her daughter Elizabeth Pearsall. I don't have the original will only an abstract.

Having said all this, there were also a number of Pierson families in Texas in 1860.

I'm researching Stephen Pearsall who was my 2nd great grandfather who may have been a slave of J. E. Pearsall. In the Texas Voter Registration dated July 25, 1865 his residence was listed as Frelsburg in Colorado County and that he was in Texas and Colorado County for 13 years. The name listed in the Voter Registration was "Stephen Pierson". A family member said she heard a story that he was the product his white slave owner and black slave. She said he had a half brother and sister named Jim and Elizabeth. Not sure if that is accurate though. The 1870 Census shows "Steph Pierson" being from North Carolina in Fayette County as a residence. The only reason I bring up J.E. Pearsall is that he is also from North Carolina and lived in Colorado County and had 42 slaves one of which was a male about the age of Stephen.

Not sure how else to look into this. Still fairly new at this type of research.

Any idea how John Edward Pearsall recovered, financially? In 1860 Texas, the value of his real property was $25,000 and his personal asset was 35,000. That was "rich" during that era.

The father of John Edward Pearsall, John Pearsall (died 1828) bought to Tennesse six slaves, names unknown, but they ended up with the spouse (Thomas Hill Wright)of his daughter, Hannah Pearsall because of debts owed.I have pictures provided by a Texas resident of the Cyclone Cemetery in Bell County, Texas and its interments.
The Foy Benjamin Pearsall (1892-1955) was from Wayne Co, NC and so were his parents. He died in Cleveland, Ohio. This family I took an interest in because I saw a obit on him and proceeded to find out who they were.

Per findagrave memorial, John Edward Pearsall was born in Wayne County. Is it possible Foy Benjamin or his ancestors were members of his enslaved estate? Per 1860 Slave Census J. E. Pearsall paid taxes on at least 42 slaves. The irony of that "peculiar institution" is that probates, deeds-of-gift, bill-of-sales, etc are critical to African American research.

The tree that I have on there is for a family (Foy Benjamin Pearsall - a black family that originated in Wayne Co, NC) I have no connection with this family other than the surname, just an genuine interest in all Pearsall's that originated in eastern NC. I have much data on the Pearsall's and intend to start putting the them on ancestry.

I don't know about the middle name of Henry Bruce Scott. The son of Neil Gilligan and Daisy Scott, John Bruce Gilligan stopped by the house (Reigelwood, NC) in September 2011. He resides in Taylor, TX.

Regarding Joel, he was a son and I think is buried in Galveston with his sister, Annie Goodloe Pearsall. Their Aunt, Victoria William md Aud Campbell and resided in Galveston, TX. Hence, the Galveston connection.

Thank you for the response. He married Elizabeth James Williams in Fayette Co, TN on 16 May 1850. John died 4 Oct 1887 in Bell Co, TX. Elizabeth died 7 Mar 1917 in Austin, TX. Four children: 1. Grace Pearsall (1852-1902) married John William Alexander Hill (1847-1927); both died in Austin, TX., numerous descendants 2. Richard Pearsall (1855-1941) married Mary J. (1862-1926); 3. Annie Goodloe Pearsall (1860-1937), never married, Teacher at what became known as Southwest Texas State Teachers College, died in Austin, TX; 4. Bella Pearsall (1860-1945) married Thomas L. Grace (1864-1923), both died in Uvalde Co, TX and are buried in Knippa, TX.

As you stated I found that Nellie Grace (1886-1961), married Walker Hairston (1883-1925). He died in Uvalde Co, TX. Nellie died in Stanislaus Co, CA. Nellie and William had two children: Adell May Hairston (1908-1929) and Edward James Hairston (1917-1960). Mary Elizabeth Grace (1883-1956) dau of Thomas and Bell, died in Stanislaus Co, CA.

The last child of John Edward Pearsall and Elizabeth James Williams was Alice Attelia (Addie)(1868-1917). Alice married to Joseph Watson Scott (1852-1942). They died in Clareville, Bee Co, TX and had four children.

Are you related to the descendants of John Edward Pearsall?

Thank you for the response. Chap 46, Sec 25 is in error. In 1972 I started researching the Pearall's that originated in eastern NC and I can tell you that Chap 46, Sec 25 is in error. Elizabeth James Pearsall and her two children are mentioned in the will of her mother, Alice James, in New Hanover County,NC. Extant are letters from John in Tennessee and from acquaintances when he died in 1828 in Salisbury, NC. He was returning to NC to get his family.

Willie Bella aka Arabella "Persal" Grace (22 Jan 1860 - 7 Mar 1945) was married to Thomas Lawrence Grace (28 Dec 1854 - 13 Dec 1923). They're found 1880 Bell-Precinct 4-004-Image 37, 1900 Robertson-Precinct 7-District 0124-Image 57, 1910 Uvalde-Precinct 7-0127-Image 7, 1920 Uvalde-Precinct 7-District 167-Image 25, and 1930 Uvalde-Precinct 7-District 10-Image 1. Eldest son Ned (28 Sep 1879 - 9 Sep 1900) not found with offspring(s). Eldest daughter Mary born 1883 was unmarried in 1930? Possible connection via Nellie Grace/Walker Hairston but they relocated to California? Not too adept researching outside Texas! A son, Lynn, appears on 1910 census but absent from 1900? John E. Pearsall's descendants my be "small" in numbers?

That original posting appears to be accurate? In addition to those kids enumerated 1860 Colorado, TX, they had Adda/Attie (ca. 1868) and Joel (ca. 1870). There are findagrave memorials: John Edward Pearsall (3 Jan 1826 - 4 Oct 1887), son Richard (12 Feb 1855 - 26 Aug 1941), and wife E. J. (25 Oct 1934 - 7 Mar 1917) buried Cyclone Cemetery of Bell County. There's also an online death certificate for Elizabeth James Pearsall who died in Travis County (same person buried in Bell County). Her father identified as surname Williams and mom as Alice Goodloe. In addition, Richard Pearsall's death certificate indicates birth in Somerville, Fayette County, TN. There is a marriage record on familysearch for J. E. Williams to E. J. Pearsall, 16 May 1850 in Fayette, TN. Believe the initials of bride and groom were reversed during transcription? J. E. Pearsall was born in Wayne, NC per tombstone inscription. I'm not related to either ethnic group!

I was just researching John Edward Pearsall and came across this post. According to the "History and Genealogy of the Pearsall Family in England and America" Chapter 46 is devoted to the descendents of Edward Pearsall who was in North Carolina. Section 25 of Chapter 46 lists "John Pearsall" as marrying Elizabeth James and residing in Duplin County. They only list 4 children (Jeremiah, Hannah, William I. and Thomas). There is no mention of John Edward Pearsall.

Hi Tommie. Hope this helps regarding Asa Leonard Townsend:

Townsend, Asa Leonard Obituary

It is with sadness we chronicle the death of Mr. A . L. [Asa Leonard] Townsend, one of the oldest citizens of the county, which occurred at the residence of his brother, Captain T.L. Townsend, on the 26th inst., in the fifty-sixth year of his age. Mr. T. had been a continual sufferer for about twenty-five years with the asthma. We have known the deceased intimately for thirty years. He was a kind husband, an affectionate father, a good neighbor, and a devoted Christian, and died with all the armor on, assuring his companion and brother that "all was well". He was buried in the Odd Fellows Rest at Weimar by the Masonic fraternity. Five of his brothers were present to witness the sad scene, three of whom joined in the mystic ceremony, in repeating the rite peculiar to that fraternity. "the dust shall return to the earth as it was, and the Spirit to God, who gave it". A large concourse of friends were in attendance.
He may have been born in Jefferson County, MS? The family of Nathaniel Kinnison "owned" many slaves per census records. Milton V. Kinnison, son of Nathaniel, found in Lavaca County, TX on 1860/1870 census. Lavaca and Colorado Counties share a common border.

I am looking for information about Alexander Fletcher Kinnison (or maybe Kinnerson or Kennison), whom I believe to be my great great grandfather. He not only lived in Colorado County but was active in its African-American community and was even elected Precinct 1 County Commissioner in 1876.

He appears to have been born in slavery, though, so I have been unable to determine his parentage, or even who his owner may have been. Can anyone help?

Husband/wife death certificates viewable/printable https://familysearch.org/ If you haven't already, you'll need to setup a "free" account with username/password. Their daughter, Peggy Collett Park (4 Sep 1906 - 21 Sep 1933) also online. Should I forward census records?
