I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. Between May 16-20, 1872 Private J.A. STEWART and Captain John M. REDMON of the Texas State Police joined with the Travis County sheriff and several Indians from the Chickasaw Nation near Arbuckle to arrest a man named KIMBLE for murder. KIMBLE shot and killed STEWART. The newspaper reported that STEWART was from Cooke County and was buried with Odd Fellows honors. I am searching for any surviving family members, date of birth, family history, place of burial etc.

I have a letter dated 1878 from my great grandfather, William Smith Griffin, to my great grandmother before they married. In his letter he states that he is going to visit his brother (first name unknown) in Dexter who is in the manufacturing business.

William Lackey and his wife Susan P. Rogers lived in Dexter area between 1865 to 1873. William, his wife and an infant son died between Dec. 1873 and Feb. 1874. They are buried in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery located about 2 miles from Dexter. William had a brother Greenberry Jr. that lived in Dexter for a while and his son Joseph is buried in the North Dexter Cemetery.

Susan ROGERS Lackey had family also living in this area during the 1870's. It is believed that at least her brother J.B. Rogers lived here.

Sampson Marion (S.M.) Gann born 1825 in TN. Sampson and his wife Maria settled in Texas in the early 1850's living first in Rusk, Texas and then in Dexter, Texas where he farmed. By 1900 Maria (buried in North Dexter Cem.) and a daughter had died leaving S.M. with two granddaughters to raise. They were Via and Abie Rogers. S.M. died in 1909 in Cooke Co., Texas. S.M. daughter married W.H. Rogers. Villulia Rogers married _____ Griffin. Other Gann descendants were Wallace, West, Stadler, Conaway, Odom, Blair. If anyone has any information on these families, please contact me. All these are realted to me on different sides of my family. I will gladly exchange information.
SLAUGHTER grave

A little girl called Ada Slaughter died in about 1883-84 in Cooke County TX. She was about 10 or 11 yrs old. Her name could have been Adaline. Either her first name or middle name. She was orphaned by 7/ 1880 when both her parents died. This little girl, Ada Slaughter, died after she caught her dress on fire as she was warming herself by the fire place. I am desperately seeking any info on her. She was the daughter of Minerva Jane ELLIS SLAUGHTER. Her mother died shortly after giving birth to Ada's little brother, John William Slaughter in May of 1880 in Bridgeport P.O., Jackson County AL. Ada had other siblings, David L., Richard Shelby, and Charles F., all younger than Ada. All of the orphaned children were taken from AL to Cooke County TX in 1880 after they lost their mother. If anyone can help me locate info or a gravesite I will be grateful.

P.S.
The spelling of Slaughter could have been spelled a different way by someone who may have reported the death or inscribing on the tombstone, if any, or any other info, so please look for any variations that you may think would fit.

Thanks for reading.
C Coughlin

Callisburg Cemetery / Methodist Church 1901

Can someone tell me if the Methodist Chruch in Callisburg was there in May 1901? I am looking for burial records for Joseph King who died May 30, 1901. In the 1900 Census he rented a farm near Callisburg. His wife was the daughter of a Methodist Minister. He was long deceased when Joe died but his wife (Evaline Doughty Baucom King Cross) was buried by a Methodist Minister in Era in 1960. So I am thinking she was Methodist throughout her life and may have had Joe's burial performed by the minister of the church there in Callisburg. Is it possible the church has burial records from 1901? Does anyone have contact information for this Church? Thanks, Lisa King - Elgin Texas

I know this to be wrong because Francis M. was born about 1877, which makes him 12 when Asa was born. Asa also had 2 older sisters, Florence and Minnie. When Asa's mom died in 1907, Asa went back to live with his mother's father Owen Asa Ellithorpe. WHERE IS THE DAD? WHERE DID THE 3 YOUNGER SIBLINGS GO???

Would like to find out about Willian Turner Williams, born Dec. 5, 1852 in Paducah,McCracken Co. Kentucky. Had several brothers of which 1 or 2 were Doctors, so I am told. Went to Texas in 1887 and married a Sarah C. Warren in 1880 and put down roots is Palo Pinto County, Texas. I have been told he moved to Cooke County for a short time and had a son, Tommy, that died there. It would be somewhere around 1890. He raised several children. He died 11 Mar 1941 and is buried near where he raised his children in Palo Pinto County. Any help would be appreciated

They are in McDonald County, Missouri for the 1850 and 1870 census. I can't find them in the 1860 census either in McDonald County or Cooke County. Supposedly they had the following children in Cooke County:
Mary Matilda and Martha Margaret Dobbs, twins, b. 19 Apr 1853, died the next day
Hemina Jane Dobbs b. 17 Jun 1855, d. 28 Jun 1855
Joseph Lodewic Dobbs b. 30 Oct 1857
Nancy Arminda Dobbs b. 9 Feb 1865

Thanks for any help,

James

I've had no luck finding Cooke's cemetery listings online.

Their daughter Ida married Joseph LEMBERT, she apparently died young and may also be buried there. Sister May Melissa married the widower & raised their combined families up in Indian Territory then OK.

If possible I would like to have some originals (not copied) of the letters, poems and photos as I personally have nothing that had belonged to my grandparents, Eva and Charles Ray BLAKEY. This would mean so much to me to have something of my grandmother Eva's. I would also like to have an original photo of her when she was young as well, this would be a real blessing for me. I would be more than happy to reimburse all copy and postage fees.

Dotty Blakey Cowart

I went up to Dexter recently and found a church and one deserted old building.

Marshall Smith

Cunningham & Leach & Grider

I'm trying to locate missing family links.

The first one is Mary Deaton, b. Jun 1884 AR. She married a Mr. Cunningham in Cooke Co., TX by 1902. They had two children: Thomas W., & Mary. By 1910, both parents are missing, presumibly dead. Thomas W. & Mary are living with grandparents, Thomas J. & Sarah Deaton in Cooke Co., TX. J Precinct. By 1920, they have moved to Le Flore Co., OK.

The next one is for Annie Taylor, b. Aug 1880. She married a Mr. Leach. They had a son Titus Clarence Leach, b. 1898. By 1900, Mr. Leach was gone. By 1910, Annie was gone. I would say that Annie married Mr. Leach in Cooke Co., TX. Are there any marriage records for those years?

Lastly, I'm trying to locate the graves of my 4th great grandparents, William & Sarah (Smith) Grider. The last I have of them is that they are living with Charles Taylor Family (son-in-law) in 1900 in Cooke Co., TX. I am almost certain that they must have died there and are buried there, but I cannot find any trace of them. They are not on the 1910 census and are not living with the Charles Taylor Family, who are in Logan Co., OK at this time. Sarah (Smith) Grider is part Cherokee Indian. Her father was David Smith, part Cherokee who m. Sarah Gallymore, a Cherokee woman. It would be great to hook up with descendants of the Grider family and/or the Smith family.

Thanks,

Mike

Putnam surname

Does anyone have any information on some Putnams that lived in Cooke County, TX in 1880? In 1880 there is this family:
Harry Putnam born Abt 1856
Texanna Putnam born Abt 1850
Joanna Putnam born Abt 1860
Jav....ia Berry Abt. 1872 (female)
Ruth Berry Abt. 1875 (she went by Arzula & never married)
Daniel Judson Berry Abt. 1878

The Putnams were siblings. Texanna (my gg grandmother) was widowed and the Berry children are hers. Texanna settled in Marietta, OK and my guess is that she was living with Harry temporarily. If you have any information, I would love to share!

Michelle MFielder@wichitavalleyrehab.com

I was hoping someone in the area might be able to look up a biography or obituary. I am working on a book about the Germans of Carroll County, Iowa, where he also worked, and I would appreciate any help. Also, I understand that a number of Germans immigrated to Cooke County from Carroll County, Iowa. Does anyone know if anything is known about that part of your county history?

Thought I'd make a post to keep the board alive, if thats possible... I did a lot of work on my site to make searching a little easier and will be reworking the text pages shortly. Take another look if any of the surnames match yours. Chances are I have some data on them.
http://www.netcolony.com/life/mine2000

BIRTH REGISTRATIONS

Going thru some old papers, I have found what I believe to be an unregistered birth certificate. My half brother, William Russell Griffin, was born in Whitewright, (Cooke Co.) TX on 2/10/1913. Parents were: Ruel Guy Griffin and Idabelle Henley Chancellor-Griffin. Soon after Russell's birth, the family moved to Thackerville, OK where Guy was murdered in 1918. I have an original birth certificate, signed by the doctor (C. B. Thayer, M. D.) and all the necessary information except it does not indicate the birth was ever registered.

Where can I check on this and whom would I contact and how. Help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Geraldine Kennedy-Young
SANTA FE BAND, GAINESVILLE, TX

My Dad played coronet in the Santa Fe Band in Gainesille probaboly between 1924 and 1927. I have a photo of the badn (about 20 men) on a flat bed truck in front of a Santa Fe train engine. The banner on the side has the Santa Fe logo and says "Preparedness thru safety "The Santa Fe Way". One of the men is holding an American flag.

Can anyone tell me about this band or the picture?

Also, I have a picture of my mother on a flat bed truck probably around the same time period. It is a group of women. I recall she said it was some kind of auxillary. They all have some kind of hat (perhaps homemade) depicting something like a crown of sort. There are two younger girls and two men. The ladies are wearing some kind of banner across their chest and shoulders and there is a banner on the hood of the truck with the letters 'FAU".

I would like to know if anyone in Gainesille has any idea what this organization was and can you tell me more about it?

Thanks.
Geraldine
