Looking to share and exchange any information/photos conerning ancestry of De Witt County --- Robert Day, wife Susan Cochran (Cockrum?), children John, Will, & Elizabeth Jane Day --- John W. Day, wife Frances A. Lowe, 10 children --- Jack Hays Day, wife Lue Renia Bell, 8 children --- Pitkin Barnes Taylor, wife Susan Cochran (Cockrum?) Day, children Amanda Jane & James 'Jim' Creed Taylor --- Will Morrow, wife Stella, children Esker, Josephine, Terry, and maybe more Morrow children --- William J. Scogin, wife Lue Ida Riley Flowers, 11 children.

Day's & Taylor's married into the Robert Burns Kelley (Kelly) & Delilah Oldham family. Day's married into the Will Morrow family. Day's originated in Georgia, Scogin family from Alabama or Florida.

My father-in-law is the Great-Great Grandson of Susan Cochran Day Taylor and also Grandson of William John Scogin, all former De Witt County residents. He is quite elderly so my timeline is rapidly diminishing to complete my research for his review and any additions he may have to offer.

Thank you for any response to this query,

Nancy L.
Byrne Co. Donegal, Ireland to Cuero, TX

I am looking for information on three Byrne brothers that immigrated from the townland of Malinbeg in the Parish of Glencolumbkille in southwest Donegal to Cuero, TX in the early 1890s.

The 1900 Cuero census shows Mike Byrne living with his brother, Barnie (Barney) Byrne. Barnie was married to a Frances and died before 1910. Frances is listed as a widow in the 1910 census with one child, Barney at age 9.

Based upon the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Cuero census, Mike married a Louisa and had one child, Mike Jr. It appears that Louisa died 19 Nov 1959 in De Witt Co. I have been unable to find when Mike Sr. died and find a record of his death certificate. I would like to see if his parents are listed on the death certificate.

In 1910, a niece and nephew of Mike Byrne, Ellen and Michael McGinley passed through Ellis Island with their final destination listed as uncle Michael Byrne in Cuero. Ellen and Michael McGinley were listed as being from Malinbeg, Glencolumbkille, Co. Donegal, Ireland.

Also in the 1900 Cuero census is the family of John J. Byrne and Annie (?). John is likely a brother of Barney and Mike. This family moved to Tarrant County.

All three individuals were in the grocery business.

Any information confirming the relationship of the three brothers and Mike Byrne’s death certificate would be appreciated.
Cemetery out by Concrete

I am looking for the name of a cemetery where my g-grandparents, the KRUMMs are buried along with a few of their children. Its out on the main road going into Cuero from Shiner. You have to go through an old store to get into the cemetery grounds but the last time we were in that area (2002), we couldn't find the old store. We saw one old, boarded-up building that looked like it might have been an old store on that road before going into Cuero, but it didn't look like it had a cemetery behind the ruins of the building. My mom has been there so many times, but nothing looked the same to her when we went. We live in CA and that was the last time we were able to drive to TX (so far). Does anyone have any idea what the name of the small cemetery is that you had to go through a store to get to it?
Thanks.

Nan

FLICK and WASSERMAN families of DeWitt County, Texas

I am trying to find a FLICK family that married into a WASSERMAN family. Raymond C. FLICK, born 17 March, 1866, in DeWitt County, Texas, died 10 March, 1924, married Annie L. WASSERMAN, born October 28, 1867. Died June 12, 1939, daughter of Gustave WASSERMAN and Margaret ROSE, on 26 October, 1887 in DeWitt County, Texas. Annie WASSERMAN had siblings: Louisa (married August C. DIETZ), Katie (married Albert F. LIENHARDT), Emil (married Erixie or Rixerine MCRAE), Gustave Frederick (married Ida KUNITZ), and Georgina (married Festus W. ABEL).

I believe that Raymond C. FLICK was the son of Frederick and Mary Anna FLICK. Frederick FLICK and his brothers, Ferdinand and John, came to the U.S. in about 1846. They landed in New Orleans where Ferdinand remained. One of the brothers, Frederick, went to Texas and the other, John, died in New Orleans. I believe that Frederick FLICK of New Orleans is the same Frederick FLICK that went to DeWitt County, Texas. I found Frederick and Mary Anna FLICK on the 1880 federal census for DeWitt County, Texas with the following children:

Alvina Flick b. 1862 Texas
Caroline (Carrie) Flick b. 1864 Texas
Florence Flick b. 1868 Texas
Hubert Flick b. 1870 Texas
Bertha M. Flick b. 1873 Texas
Charles Flick b. 1876 Texas
Paulina Margaret Flick b. July 19, 1879 DeWitt County, Texas. Died Sept. 22, 1949. Married Cecil Ralph MATTHEWS on April 25, 1905 in DeWitt County, Texas, son of John Calhoun MATTHEWS and Ida Belle HAIR. Cecil was born Feb. 4, 1879 in Barnwell, South Carolina.
Lydia Flick b. 1880 DeWitt County, Texas. Died May 11, 1947 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. Married a Mr. GEORGE.

On the 1900 federal census for Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas, ED #26, dated June 20, 1900, I found:

Anna Flick b. Sept. 1843 Germany Widow Immigrated 1846
Carrie Flick b. January 1865
August Flick b. April 1871
Charles Flick b. August 1875
Pauline Flick b. July 1877
Lydia Flick b. October 1879
Joseph Flick b. June 1883

If anyone knows anything about this FLICK family and a possible connection with the aforementioned Flick's of New Orleans, Louisiana, please contact me. There also is a connection between the John FLICK mentioned above and the WAX and HARTEGEN families of New Orleans. John FLICK died at the age of 44 and his obituary, dated April 26, 1889, states that he was a resident of New Orleans for 42 of those 44 years.

We are trying to find Dr. Samuel Burling Dickinson's family Bible. His wife was Caroline Elizabeth Kinnison Dickinson. She lived to be 107 years old and died 29 May 1926. They were some of the early, pioneer settlers of Texas and eventually settled on a ranch near Terryville in DeWitt county near the Lavaca county line. They had 11 children, 10 of whom survived to adulthood (6 males; 4 females). Some of their descendants still live in Texas. If anyone has any clues where their family Bible might be, please let us know. We are developing a web site in honor of them, their ancestors, and their descendants. Information in their family Bible would be very helpful and very interesting for posting on the web site. Thanks.
Looking for information on family from DeWitt County, Texas:

My Salmans Family History book lists that Margaret Mary (Polly) Salmans married Benjamin Power and moved to DeWitt County, TX. It says that Benjamin Power was killed by Indians in 1839, along with his son Michael. Sons Josiah and Levi were captured by Indians in 1842--Josiah escaped and Levi was killed. A grandson named Joe Van Dyke was killed by Indians in New Mexico.

I am wanting to find out if this is fact or fiction. Can anyone tell me? Would someone be willing to look up this information for me in your local history books or death records?

Sharon
ksharrison@veracom.net

Although she states in the census she is born Texas and so are both parents, I can find nothing on her before her marriage, nor can I find a divorce (Herbert Cooper remarried in 1926 in Australia) or a death for her.

Since I do not find many WASKOWs and most are in DeWitt County, I am hoping that she fits into someone's tree from this county.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

She was married to James Priestly who moved soon after her death to Cherokee Co., TX.- so she would probably be the only Priestly at that site. I would like to know whick cemetery she is buried in. Also, some family members believe she might be buried in San Marcus. Does anyone in that area know of old cemeteries that have listings or anyone who does cemetery lookups. I have information for her, but the query address came back to me. I continue to look for proof on the date of arrival of Henry Hensley (Henry Casper Genzler also seen on 1850 census Bexar Co as 'kenseller') on a German ship to Indianola in 1846. I need to know the ship he arrived on with his parents, their names, and date of arrival. Can someone contact me about Ms. Guinn new e-mail address?
Looing for DeWitt County History book entry (BAROS)

Currently, I am looking for a copy of the DeWitt County History book entry regarding the Baros family. It tells of a Michael Baros who came to Dewitt in 1870 from Czechoslavakia. He and his wife Ann and 8 children immigrated, landing in New Orleans. It was sent in by Adolph Baros.

If you have this, I would very much like to obtain a copy from you, if at all possible.

I have a paternal Great Grandmother of Moravian heritage who was reportedly a BAROZ (most likely a misspelling of Baros) who was born in Yoakum, DeWitt County, 15 Aug 1878. From what I can piece together, her maiden name was Mary Edvicka Baroz/Baros/etc. (Her 19 year old son was the informant for her death certificate, and I imagine he did it from memory. With the proper hacek over the "Z", it would have been pronounced similarly to Barosh--as would Baros--and therefore could be any of a number of spelling variations. He put BAROZ on her death certificate, but there seem to be no BAROZ's. Conversely, from the little town of Yoakum--which narrows it down quite a bit by itself--there are many Baros' and Beros' from Moravia. With a comparatively generic name like "Mary", her original first name could also be a list of variations.) Mary Baroz/
Baros/Beros/etc married my Great Grandfather Frantisek (Frank) Bacak in about 1903 and had 5 children.

I cannot for the life of me (so far) determine who her parents were, so any information related to the surname would be helpful. So far, I am leaning toward Vincent Baros as her potential father, who had a wife and two daughters named "Mary", but I cannot obtain any confirmation that she is one of them thus far. A volunteer from the library in Yoakum is going to do some research on it, but she is alone and bogged down and in poor health, so (though very thankful for any assistance) I have no idea when she might be able to get to it. Therefore, I am still doing "wide aperture" research of my own as well.
Many thanks,

Richard Martin

Seeking information regarding John Marion Custer. He was an Old Time Trail Driver of Texas and he rode the trails for at least 12 years. He also went under the alias of Bill Wilson for a few years after getting into trouble. I also have a small picture of him working on the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio. He was married to Sarah Jane Croft in 1893 in Dewitt. They were out of Live Oak. Sarah Jane Croft was out of Bee Co.
I believe he lived out his elderly years in or around Gonzales. I would like to also know where he is buried.

FYI: John Custer was born in Marion Co. Alabama in about 1865. His parents are buried in LIve Oak Co. Tx.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ron Woods

I read in the book,"Yorktown,Texas its History 1848-1989", that a group of citizens of Yorktown,DeWitt County,Texas, organized the Hulan Reserve Company with a muster of 60 officers and men on June 10,1861. The orderly Sergeant was listed as Chas.Karnei. Who was he and where did he and his family come from? I asked my father about him, but he couldn't figure out who he was and which Karneis he was related to. Also the 3rd Lieutenant was listed as C. Gohlke. Does anyone know who he was? Also W. Gohlke. I wish that they listed their entire name, then maybe I could get a clearer picture of who they were. I also would like to have a history of this group, did they fight in any battles, and if they did, what casulties resulted from this group?

I would also like to buy a copy of this book, and would have never known about this book if I hadn't been doing research at the main library in SA,Texas. I happened to be standing right by the shelf where it was just sitting there at the end of it. I would have never known that it even existed.

I am also doing research on the Gohlke and Karnei surnames and am trying to collect as much information possible about all the Gohlkes all over the USA and in Germany. It seems that they all came from very near each other originally and might be related, but we will never know unless we do this research.

I believe he lived in Cuero on Gonzales St. He was the son of a Methodist Minister,Rev. Allen Marion Box and Christiana (McIntosh) Box. I believe he married Illa (maiden name unknown) around 1902 and they had a son, George P. Jr. and daughters Rebecca Louise and Margaret Helen. From the Cemetery records of DeWitt County, I found that George, Illa, Rebecca Louise, and George P. Jr. are all buried in DeWitt Co.
PARK, WHITE, EVETTS, DONOHO Families

Hello,

I am doing research on my husband's grandfather (Moses Aaron Evetts b. 1865 d. 1950). He was the son of William Evetts (b. TN 1823 d.?) and Keziah (AKA "Kizzy" or "Kacy") Donaho Evetts (b. TX 1834 d.?) . Keziah was the daughter of William "Chief" Donaho (b. by 1800 in SC d.?) and Jane Addison (b. @ 1798 d.?).

Keziah was "apparently" widowed, and remarried to a John White in DeWitt Cnty on 9 July 1873. This union produced a son, Joseph White (b. 1877)

Also Keziah's daughter, Martha J. Evetts, married William J. Park on 27 Jan 1872.

I have had problems locating this family after the 1880 census. It has been particularly difficult as I don't know in which town they lived in DeWitt County, so searching cemetery records is difficult. If you have any information on ANY OF these individuals or any of these family "lines" could you please provide to me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank You,
Pat Evetts
pevetts@gvtc.com
I am looking for more info about Lewis Wofford, born about 1857-8, I believe in DeWitt County, to Daniel Webster Wofford and Nancy (Cooper) Wofford.
On the 1860 DeWitt census, he is listed in their household as 2 year old, along with the other children: Mary, Jane, Webb, John, and Susan. Problem is, he isn't listed on the 1870 census or 1880 census with them. The other children are though, except Susan, who may have died, I don't know. Then in the 1870 and 1880 censuses there are additional later children as well. So I am not sure which censuses are correct but this does seem to be the same family. Lewis went on to marry Mattie L. Clark, presumably in DeWitt County but I don't know for sure. If anyone has any info and can verify that Lewis is the son of Daniel & Nancy or just any info at all I would appreciate it. Thanks!!

Marriages in Dewitt Co. 1870-1880

I have been trying to trace my family tree using the U. S. census records for Texas. I first found my ggrandfather in Mills Co. in 1910. I then found my gggrandfather in Llano Co. in 1900. I then saw him in the 1870 census at age 17, one of 5 brothers, living with a family of Woods and Word surnames. I found my gggrandfather again in the 1880 census of Dewitt Co., still living in close proximity to 4 of his brothers, Henry Woods and Emily Callaway/Word/Woods. My gggrandfather, Samuel Callaway was married to a 21 year old named Ardelia. Looking back to the 1870 census for 11 yr. old Ardelia's in close proximity and found a Ardelia Glimp and assumed that Samuel's Ardelia was a Glimp, based of names, ages, children's names ,proximity, etc. Since that time I have incountered family trees put out by Family Tree maker and the LDS which have my samuel and Ardelia married to other people but these other people don't have nearly as many matching dates and locations. I need marriage information on Samuel Calaway/Calloway and Ardelia age ~17 yrs. somewhere around 1875-76. In the 1880 census their oldest child, Milton is 3 yrs. old. and they also have a baby girl, Nicholena. Does Dewitt Co. have marriage and birth records for this time frame?
If you have an ancestor who served in Hobby's Eighth Infantry, especially in Company B, I would be interested in recording the location of, and possibly photographing the gravesite. I have recently found six veterans of Company B in DeWitt County, Cuero area, and am hoping to document the burial locations of as many others as possible in hopes of identifying their approximate city of origin.

Cuero Hillside Cemetery
Capt.
