Spur Party Photographs 1912-1920

I know that not many photos exist of social events of early Spur, but I hope that some of you might have old party or church event social gathering stored somewhere--or even posed pictures of young women and men from the years 1912-1920. I'm trying to create a book that captures the idea of life in early Spur and especially (at this point) the courtship and social entertainments of young people. Picnics, Kodaking trips, and revivals...anywhere young people gathered to meet and court. I've found references in The Texas Spur about members of the following clubs and their activities:

Batchelor Girls
Merry Wives
Bob Whites
Old Maid's (or Old Maid's Thimble)Club

If you have anything more on these groups--Photos or stories--please let me know!

Thanks,
Marcia

I am looking for information on Lillian Long, daughter of Earl Benton Long and sister of Joe Bailey Long. Lillian was born about 1905 in Oklahoma.

I have the obituaries for both Earl and Joe. Earl's says that he had three grandchildren. I have been able to determine that two of them were sons of Joe Bailey Long. The third was probably the child of Lillian, who is not mentioned in either obituary. Can anyone help me find this child? I have no idea who Lillian married.

Also, does anyone know if Earl had a second wife? No wife is mentioned in his obituary. The mother of Lillian and Joe Bailey was Susan Ida Jackson, whose father was my great grandmother's half-brother. Susan died in Crosby County in 1923. She is buried in Hood County, Texas, near her parents and first child who died young.

About a year or so ago I requested information on Willis Rufus Henderson, Sr. who died in 1943 and is buried in Spur Memorial Cemetery. Linda Hughes was kind enough to get the information from the funeral home in Spur and send it to me. I stupidly deleted the e-mail before I recorded the names of his parents. (How embarrassing)....I know the father's name was Sam or Samuel but I can't remember the mother's maiden name. I am wondering if someone would be able to send the information to me again. Thank you.

Ricky Henderson

On the John Hampton and Lillian Grace page, a footnote about W. W. Grace (John Hampton's Father) was posted by Rudella Connally. She mentioned that she had a civil war journal from the elder Grace. The Graces were my great-grandparents, and I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who knows how I can contact Rudella Connally about the journal. I'd also appreciate any new information on the Grace family.

Thanks,
Marcia Dickson

James A. Neighbors/ William A. Neighbors

I am searching for information on brothers James A. and William A. Neighbors. I am trying to find out if they are the sons of Albert Neighbors and Sarah Autrey Neighbors.

I have the obituary for W.A. Neighbors from The Texas Spur dated July 31, 1914. It says that W.A. Neighbors, a "prominent citizen of the Steel Hill community" had died at the home of his brother, J.A. Neighbors. The reference to the services being held at the Church of Christ gave me the clue that these were my great-grandfather James A. and his brother, since James was an elder in the Church of Christ at one time. W.A. Neighbors is buried in Spur Cemetery.

I am not sure when my James A. Neighbors moved to west Texas, but I think it was some time in the 1890's. My mother, his granddaughter, says that Jim Neighbors and his second wife (his first wife died 6 weeks after they were married), DuRetta Bee "Retta" Lewis Neighbors, bought land at Spur, then later sold it and bought a section of land 4 miles south of Crosbyton and raised cotton and grains. They also had rent property in Crosbyton, but fell on hard times and had to sell it. The family eventually moved to Parker Co, TX in the 1930's, where Jim Neighbors died in 1938.

There are about 11 or 12 children listed on the Union Parish LA and Bowie Co TX censuses, so I hope that some of you Neighbors researchers who are the descendents of Albert Neighbors and Sarah Autrey Neighbors can help me figure out if their children listed as Wm.A. and James A. are my ancestors.

And I hope that some of you in Dickens County can give me any information on James A. and William A. Neighbors or suggestions as to how/where to search for information.

I am not listed on any mailing lists, so please reply to this message board or directly to my e-mail.

Thank you for your help!

Denise in Texas

My grandparents were James Reubin E. Lee b. 1886 in Gorman, Texas. He married Lillie Maude Hagins 23 Dec 1898 in Spur, Dickens, TX in 1915. I know the Hagins side of the family but cannot locate anything on him. He also went by R.E. Lee and Reubin E. Lee. They had 7 children who all lived around the Fort Worth, Texas area. My grandfather was said to possibly been adopted by a family named Bond of Buffalo, New York area and the Bond family were in furniture business. I have not been able to make that connection. He was also said to have been a mounted policeman in Waco in the 1920-1930, as well as a Free Mason. Any information you have on him would be helpful. Also If any Hagins family members have any stories about my grandmother Lillie Maude, daughter of Lou Carlisle and Powhatan Elcano "Poet" Hagins of Duck Creek, Dickens, Texas.

I am currently living in Maryland and it will be several years before I can go to Texas to find it myself.

I will gladly return the favor if you need anything from the Maryland/D.C. area.

Here is the information I have on her:

Elizabeth Jane Goyne (maiden name Johnson)
spouse: John Thomas Goyne
Birth date: Jan 10, 1885
Place: Texas
Death: March 31, 1918
Burried in Afton Cemetery (R17)

Teresa

George Walter Jackson and Mattie Leona Davis

I am helping a cousin with his research. The above couple are his maternal grandparents. Mattie Leona Davis was born about 1882 in Texas and was married before te 1900 census. Therefore, she is not listed on any census record with her parents. According to the 1900 census, her mother was born in Mississippi and her father in North Carolina.

There is a widow, Jane Davis, listed on the 1900 census in Dickens County. Living with her are two children. That census record says that Jane was born in Mississippi and the record for the children say that their father was born in North Carolina. Jane could, then be the mother of Mattie Leona Davis.

George Walter Jackson and Mattie Leona Davis were living in Dickens County in 1900, 1910 and 1920. By 1930, they were living in Arizona. They had 7 children, Hansel, Velma, Una (my cousin's grandmother), Horace, Halbert, Winnie and Minnie (the last two were twins).

Una married Ben Lyle Crites about 1924, possibly in Arizona where they are found on the 1930 census.

The Jacksboro Gazette
Thursday, February 24, 1944

Rev. J.V. Bilberry, 83, father of Rev. A.R. Bilberry of Jacksboro, died at his home at Spur, 21 February 1944. Funeral and burial took place at Spur. Survived by sour sons and two daughters.
When Rev. Bilberry first went west there was not a church of any denomination in Dickens County. He organized the first church in Dickens county and in Garza County at Post. He was for a number of years, missionary of the old Stonewall Baptist Association.
Rev. Bilberry served in the Baptist ministery for 47 years, and the people where he preached and worked unceasingly during this time truly realize that a watchman in Zion has fallen.
