Park - Eastland & Comanche Counties

I saw some earlier posts re Pontotoc Co., Mississippi, Quarterly and reference to the info it might contain re families who came from Pontotoc Co., MS to Eastland & Comanche Counties, Texas. I am interested in the PARK Family. BRYANT LEROY PARK brought his family first to Comanche Co. and then to Eastland Co. probably between 1900-1909. He married 3 times, the first in Mississippi to S.E. (?) by whom he had at least 6 children, all born in Mississippi: Elonzo Lonnie Park (1887-1961 md. Belle ? (1892-1981); Jessie W. (b. Sep 1889); Leroy B. (1891-1968); Eva (b. Oct 1893); Ernest (1896-1965); and Modess (b. Aug 1897. He then married SARAH EVIE MILLER (1875-1911), dau/o Gordon MILLER (of Sugar Valley, GA & Comanche Co., TX) and Sarah Catherine METCALF. Evie (MILLER) PARK was the mother of one or two daughters (there seems to be confusion among researchers there.) Verleta/Valeda PARK, b. abt 1909 in Texas is listed in 1910 & 1920 censuses. However, she may be the Veola Dee PARK (b. 22 Jan 1911 - d. 27 Mar 1967). [The dates given for her don't fit with the census records, sooooo.....] Byrant Leroy PARK's third wife was Bertie M. ?, whom he apparently married shortly after Evie's death in Jan 1911. I find no evidence that there were any children of this union.

Bryant Leroy & 3rd wife Bertie PARK as well as son Ernest are buried in Gorman Cemetery. Sons Lonnie & Leroy are buried in Oaklawn Cemetery adjacent to Gorman Cemetery.

I would appreciate any infomation on this family.
John Wesley Burns --> John Christopher Burns and descendants

I am looking for descendants of John Wesley Burns through his son John Christopher Burns, a.k.a. J.C.J. Burns.

John Christopher Burns was in Ellis County, Texas in 1880, lived in New Mexico for some period of time between 1880 and 1920, and lived in Lubbock County, Texas from ca. 1920 until his death in 1933. The family also lived in Eastland County for a time in the 1880s.

I have a possible match in my file for John Christopher Burns, born 1854 in Texas, and son of John Wesley Burns.

My John Burns, son of John W. Burns, was also born 1854 in Texas. I find only one John Burns in census records in Texas that matches this profile, so I am trying to make a connection between John Wesley Burns, and John W. Burns to determine if this is the same family.

In particular, I am seeking the parents and three youngest siblings of Manerva Lucinda Burns. I am descended, on my mother's side, from Manerva Lucinda Burns.

The parents, John W. Burns and Manerva Hester, moved 'west' from Rusk County, Texas between 1870 and 1880 with youngest children John, Roxana, and Bethena Letisha, to parts unknown, and were never heard from again by Manerva Lucinda Burns and her family.

Please compare the report of John Wesley Burns with that of John W. Burns below, and please reply if you think these may be the same family. I can give more details about John W. and Manerva Burns.

Thanks,

Tom Vaughn

Descendants of John Wesley Burns

1 John Wesley Burns - Date Unknown
........ 2 John Christopher Burns 1854 - 1933 <---------------------- Possible match
............ +Emily Josephine Holley 1854 - 1935
................... 3 Walter Augustus Burns 1880 - 1932
....................... +Estella Esther Baker 1888 - 1972
................... 3 John R.

I'm trying to locate the burial place of Susan Elizabeth Beaford Steele.
She was the wife of Capt. John Steele and they at one time ran the Steele Hotel in Eastland.

I need to find her burial place for her possible inclusion in _Texas Burial Sites of Civil War Notables_. She was the subject of an article in "Frontier Times" about her life in Georgia during the Civil War and her later coming to Eastland.

I thank anyone who can assist in this.
Some of my SCURLOCK relatives lived in Eastland Co and some are buried there. Particularly interested in descendants of Josiah Gordon (Doc)SCURLOCK. I am a descendant of his sister, Rhoda Ann SCURLOCK (b 23 Jul 1837) married John Sherman DeKalb ARMSTRONG. My grandparents, William Marcellus ARMSTRONG and Anna Eliza GUY lived in Eastland on the north side of town, just as you go up the hill. The house was about l/4 mile off of the road and had a small lake of water in front. If you know anything about the SCURLOCK family or the ARMSTRONG family, please e-mail me. I will share any info I have on them.
Audlou2@aol.com

Armstrong/Baker families in Eastland County

Would appreciate info on Susan Melinda Armstrong, widow of Confederate vet John.Armstrong of Georgia. He died in Georgia and she moved to Eastland Co. in 1880s or 90s with sons Paul Medwin, John Hardy (my grandfather) and a third son known to me only as "Zee," possibly Zeke or Ezekial. Susan homesteaded at Cuervo, N.M. with son Paul and died there in 1909. Census records are unclear on her maiden name, possibly Peasley, Pealsey or Teasley. They were married in Georgia before Civil War. John Hardy married Lucie (or Lucy) Baker at Eastland in 1900 or 1901 and they moved about 1908 to Mangum, OK where both are buried. Their oldest child was Willie Logan Armstrong, my father. Lucy's father was Walter Logan Baker, His sons who lived to old age were Jim and Walter. I'm particularly interested in info on Susan, her husband John (the Civil War soldier) and son Zee. Also interested in corresponding with Baker family.

Jones family that raised a Belrose baby in Sabine County TX around San Augustine

My childrens' GGrandparents were Caleb & Victory Porter Belrose. b. about 1864. The story goes that Caleb's father was killed in the Civil War. His mother was bringing him on a wagon train to Texas from an unknown destination, when she died. A nice family by the name of Jones took baby Caleb into raise as their own. About the age of 16 he found out that he was not a Jones but a Belrose. He got upset and left. The Jones' later passed away leaving him his equal share of the family fortune. When they found and offered it to him, he refused saying that it was not his to take. We are trying to do our Belrose Family lineage, but can't because we can only go back to Caleb & Victory. Since we don't know who raised him, and we don't know his birth parents names. If anyone could be of help, we would be very grateful. It is a very interesting story! One that I would personally like to be able to tell completely to my own children. That is why we started this, so our children would know their history and pass it down to their children. Thanks for your help. pameyjane@yahoo.com

William James Pate, born 1872, died prob in Ranger, Eastland Co., TX. abt. 1924

My husband had a great grandfather named William James Pate, born November 1872 somewhere in Texas. He married Emma Barber in Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana in 1896, and they had three children together. William Pate later deserted this family and returned to Texas. In 1918 he was in Orange, Orange County, Texas, with a wife named Eva (per Draft Registration Card). In 1920 he and Eva were in Ranger City, Eastland County, Texas (according to the 1920 Census). He is believed to have died in about 1924, probably in Eastland County. (Actually, I was told somewhere out around Ft. Worth, but--from here--Eastland might be considered close to Ft. Worth.) Does anyone have information about William, such as date and place of death, or an obituary? Any information at all would be appreciated. Thanks very much. Loretta Cooley

The following is from a newspaper clipping without a date. It occurred sometime after Dec 26, 1910 most likely in 1911.

"Accidentally Killed"
"On last Friday evening about sundown a most deplorable accident occurred near Merrriman which cost the life of Mr. Ephram Dixon a young man living in that vicinity. Some time in the afternoon Mr Dixon in company with a friend Mr Chas McGlothlin took a gun and started out hunting and late in the evening, they treed a squirrel Mr Dixon stood his gun against a tree close by and began chopping the brush away preparatory to cutting down the tree , when in some way the gun was knocked down and discharged the load of shot taking direct in Mr. Dixon's right side, killing him instantly, Mr. McGlothlin reported the accident and Saturday morning County Attorney Davenport went down to investigate the matter . A coroner's jury was impaneled and from the testimony a Verdict in accordance with the above facts was rendered. The remains were interned in the old Merriman Cemetery."

I do not have at date of death for Ephram Dixon. There is a very good chance that there was no headstone for the grave. His family was from Henderson Co, TX. Any information would be helpful.

The Lost Bell Family of Alameda

I wrote the following story, and have hit a brick wall trying to find out what happened to the Bell family in 1877...any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jeff.

The Bell Family Mystery
Five Killed, Laid to Rest
At Mansker Family Cemetery
By Jeff Clark

Five members of the Bell Family died tragically in 1877. They were laid to rest in the Mansker Family Cemetery, at what would later become Alameda. The tragedy of whatever felled that young family hangs heavy in the mist, silent yet calling.

I have learned that the answer is always out there, if we will only be patient, if we will believe. Searches with friends over the last couple of years have proven this time after time – the Rustler Community was found hiding over near Salem. The hermit finally showed himself, became a trusted guide. The breaks in both cases can only be credited as gifts.

I was out wandering in Alameda Cemetery the other day. Someone had emailed looking for a grave from the late 1800s. To the left of her grave, five more tombstones stared back -- the Bell Family, five burials in the same year. The tragedy happened within a few miles of this tranquil setting. What could their lives have been like as that 1877 spring brought a cascading series of funerals, all linked, that changed that new family’s life forever?

If you get near the back of the cemetery, around its first graves, you find the Bell family. The printout in my hands tells that five Bells died in 1877, three of them children. Three of the graves have only initials for first names.

The cemetery has six Bell graves total, far as I can tell. Five of them are these near the back, mere yards from the more famous Manskers. They sit on a shaded knoll that gave this site a side to side view of the Leon River Valley. Back then, the flats below would have been grown up in brambles and shinnery. They could have seen log cabins in all directions except west. Looking south, the mourners would have seen a much larger, majestic Mansker Lake. The promise of that lake, of that rich valley might have invited the Bell Family to these parts with the hope of a better life.

I stood there looking at the five lonely headstones standing like soldiers, theories of what happened rolling around in my head. It could have been one of the serial epidemics common back then. The 1877 deaths started in April with I. E. Bell dying. He or she was twenty- three. Then September claimed young Allie, seven months old. October took first Robert Lee Bell, two-years-old, then four days later four-year-old sister Frances. They are buried next to Susan Booth who died in July that same year, separated by a cedar planted after the turn of the century. All the headstones are hard to read.
There is a gap between the two larger adult headstones, big enough for another grave. The markers were carved in white stone, the work of a professional. It’s easy to get this type of work wrong -- I re-read my printout. I was one grave short. Then it hit me. There are TWO I. E. Bell tombstones on this printout, both dying in 1877 but the second stone was not here. As I studied the details, I noticed that both died on the same day, April 19. But the birthdays were one day apart – October 24 and October 25, both 1854. The part I’d missed up until now is that the second I.E. Bell was buried several rows away. I started walking quickly to the east.

Finally, after much bending and reading weathered rock headstones, I found the second I. E. Bell. There are no markers for several spaces on either side. An ancient brown sandstone marker, letters etched roughly by hand proclaimed his or her final resting place. Fluffy green moss was alive and well around the lettering, giving a haunting quality to the memorial. This I. E. Bell headstone is original, I suspect. I stood up and looked back toward the other Bell headstones. Though they are thirteen rows to the west, both sites are about the same distance from the south fence. Could family members, many years after the fact, have come back and set nicer permanent markers at the first site? Could the grief of losing so many within six short months and the distance of time have clouded the survivors’ memories of location?
The Bells are not a family name that I’ve run across in the tales from the late 1800s out there. By 1877 the Indians would have been gone from the country, and the family’s passings were separated by several months. I didn’t find them on a quick look at the 1870 census, yet the six month tragedy would indicate that they were not campers at Mansker Lake, passing through on their way somewhere else, as many hundreds did. They were probably neighbors to families we know -- passed our kin at the Schmick Store, sang hymns on Sundays in the arbor up the hill, struggled to get by as most did in those times.

The only other Bell in the entire cemetery, far as I can tell, is A. S. Bell (Asa?), buried right beside this first row. He or she was born in 1829 and died in 1892, sixty-three years old. The headstone mirrors the style and age of the other four Bells in his row, the ones that started this story. He or she was alive when catastrophe struck. Did this father or mother leave the area broken, and yet come back to join the family at the end? Did he or she continue to live below the radar of history on the shores of Mansker Lake, for fifteen more years crippled by grief?
I want to know the Bells, to know what happened. I want to write their story, let some folks understand their passing. A quick search in my “easy answer” bag of tricks offers no solution to these first puzzle pieces. The kind people that have been helping weren’t even born until sixty years after this tragedy. The answer will have to come from the mist... jdclark3312@aol.com.

I spent considerable time at the Eastland County Clerk's Office looking for birth and death records without success. After the fact I was told by the Texas Department of Health Services that if the event took place in the city limits the record would be at the city level -- not the county. The Eastland County Clerk said nothing of this. How do I locate births or deaths that occurred in the City of Ranger or Gorman?

Thank you,
Kay Fordham (California)

My uncle "Louie", Charles Louis Porterfield, married his first wife on 18 October 1935 in Cisco Texas. I have always known her (maiden name) as Ruby Jo(e) Lassiter. But in a recent check of the Texas Birth Records for their son (Louis Fulton Porterfield) born 17 Aug 1937, I found her name listed as Ruby Joe Yancey.

First of all, if any one can check local marriage records for Cisco in 1935, that might help clarify the name issue.

Also, if any one has other information on Ruby Jo(e), I would appreciate it. I have not done much research on her until recently. I am not even sure when or where she was born.

My Uncle (Charles) Louis remarried in 1946 in Waco. Did Ruby Jo die or were they divorced?

Thanks,
George Porterfield
(in chilly PA)

Mary Sanders, born ca. 1855, mother of George Moore

I just found a 1930 census record from Eastland County that shows the mother of my great grandfather, George Moore (Feb. 22, 1889-Aug. 28, 1977, buried Colony Cemetery, Ranger, Eastland County) is a Mary Sanders. In 1930 she was 75 and widowed. Her birth place and that of her parents is the United States only.

What i need to know is, is Sanders her married name (if so, how is her son named George Moore?) or her maiden name? I can't figure out how to make this fit.

Her son, George, his wife (Della), both his daughters (Ruby Griffin and Mary Tarrant) and their spouses, and his son, George, are buried in Colony Cemetery, so Mary Sanders may also be buried there. If anyone that lives out that way would be willing to check for me, that would be amazing. George and Della are buried in the back right corner behind some mountain cedars.

I am looking for relatives or friends of Army Air Force Corporal Robert L. McAdoo, Jr. of Desdemona, Texas. Corporal McAdoo was a World War II MIA who served with the 1330th Army Air Force Base Unit in Jorhat, India. On July 17, 1945 his C-109 aircraft vanished on a flight from Jorhat to Hsinching, China. This past August, Mr. Clayton Kuhles discovered the wreckage of his aircraft in the Lower Dibang Valley district of northeast India. Mr. Kuhles has asked me to try to locate the relatives of Corporal McAdoo, to notify them of the news of this discovery.
Corporal McAdoo was born about 1923, the son of Robert L. McAdoo and I. Marie McAdoo. His father was born about 1898 and his mother was born about 1901. His military service number was 18082676. He is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery.

AR. living with cousins Wade + Zephra STEPHERD and in 1930 I am not sure but there is an Al BROYLES on the Eastland Co. TX. census as an inmate.
Is there any way I can find out about this Al BROYLES. On my grandfather draft registration it states my grandfather was in prison at that time, it was signed by his mother. I haven't been able to find his whereabouts in 1930.

I am trying to do some research on my step-father's family (I consider them mine also as I have been in the family for 53 years). His mother's name was (I believe this is right), Eunice Slaughter (or Carter) and she married Johnny D. Clements. They lived in Eastland Co. since the early 1900's and are both buried at Eastland. The family lived in Morton Valley for many years. I know there is a connection to the Carter family because when I was a child we attended several Carter family reunions at Abilene.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I could probably get some info from Daddy, but I want to surprise him with this.

Please contact me direct with any info. jlindley@centurytel.net

Thanks,

Jan Lindley

I am trying to locate the grave of my grandfather, Lawrence McKinney, who was buried, I thought, in the Rising
Star Cemetery about 1955. I see Shirley Cawyer's name is next to that cemetery but there is no contact info for her. Is there anyone else that might know something about this? I know I went to a cemetery in or near Rising Star with my mother in the late 50s, met my grandfather's
second wife, Bertha, there to visit the gravesite. But the listing(http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/Texas/eastland.html) for the Rising Star Cemetery does not have his name.
Is there anything anyone can tell me or can someone forward this to someone who might know more information?
Please contact me directly (this was posted from my wife's id).

I have a copy of a letter written in 1922 by C. U. Connellee to my g grandfather concerning his departure from his employ to return to Kentucky. It was a very nice letter in terms of my g grandfathers work ethic and states he had worked for about 4 years for Mr. Connellee. Does anyone know what sort of horse racing he was involved in? My g grandfather trained trotters, I think was the term. I am also wondering if he had stables of some size where there might be photos? Are there descendants still in the Eastland area? Will be happy to share the letter with any interested parties.
