Hey, Randy! I just may ACCIDENTALLY have a clue or 2 for you! When I read your post and saw the photo, the people looked sort of familiar, so I started going thru my 3,300+ pictures on ancestry, because a lot of my relatives wound up in Erath Co., Texas, too. To see my photos, go on ancestry and do a search for me, Melanie McCoy, b. 1946, Oklahoma City, OK. When you get into my tree, search for these people:
1. THOMAS WHITFIELD BIGBY:1848-1916. He & his wife could be a younger version of some in your photo. He was born & died in OK, and I haven't figured out how he got the middle name Whitfield yet. He is of Cherokee descent.
2. MARGARET KELSEY KETCHUM, Cherokee descent: 1858-1932, ERATH CO., TEXAS.
3. MARTHA ANN BULLARD, Cherokee: 1821-1889, ERATH CO., TEXAS.
Margaret & Martha's faces closely resemble those of the women in your photo.
Martha Ann Bullard married a Southern, their dtr. m. a Lowe(Lough), their Lowe son married a Terry. All these families spent many years in Erath Co.
Margaret Kelsey (m. a Ketchum) is from an offshoot of the same LOWE families in Erath Co.
Please, Please, write and tell me who you suspect your photo to be, and for whom you are looking in Erath Co., OK?
I've just got to know who these people are.
You are welcome to use any and all info on my tree. Help yourself. Do you have a tree on ancestry? May I look at it, and if so, what name do I look up to find it?
I really hope to hear from you soon. Good luck!
Melanie McCoy

Oh no! Thought I "had something"!(lol) Appears the Mathews/Matthews family found in Erath/Palo Pinto County immigrated in 1871. From the Bible: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? Brothers Abednego, Meshach, and James immigrated along with sister Sarah Caroline (wed Evan Jones). Hope someone is researching this family? Your James A. Mathews is a mystery. There's no evidence James Mathews that immigrated in 1871 was ever married. He's found with married sister's family 1900 TX-Palo Pinto-Precinct 8-District 0125-Images 29 & 30. He and his brothers buried in Palo Pinto.

James George Matthews (18 Apr 1895 - 10 Nov 1972) died in El Paso as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident. He was a resident of Odessa. Seems the father's given name was actually Meshach or various spelling. James married Ethel True, 6 Jul 1920 in Erath. She was the daughter of Commodore Perry and Flora May/Mae Eggert. Ethel was born ca. Oct 1896 in Kansas and died 25 Nov 1995 in Oklahoma. Her death notice published Monday, 27 Nov 1995 in Tulsa World. Meshach Mathews (17 Aug 1862 - 12 Nov 1948) buried Palo Pinto. There's more!

The James Mathews I am looking for died in Birmingham, Alabama April 9, 1978 and is buried at Forest Hills Cemetery, Birmingham, Al so this must not be the same one. Did the James living next door to Mich possibly have a child named James also. This James Mathews just continues to be a brick wall. I have not been able to locate him until the 1930 census living in Coosa County, Alabama

I believe the person you are looking for is James George Mathews. He was born 18 April 1895 in Thurber, Erath County, Texas. He died 3 January 1988 in Ft. Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. He is found on the 1900 census of Erath County, Texas. In the home are Mich, Mary, Shadrick, James, and Nellie Mathews. In 1910, he is father, Mitch, and brother Shadrick are living in Palo Pinto County, Texas. Around 1918, he is in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. His brother Shadric is also living there.

James George Mathew's mother, according to one research, was Mary Gibson, born 1875 in Scotland. She died 1 September 1956 in Chicago, Illinois. She was married three times: 1) Mitch Mathews, 3 April 1891, in Erath County (Texas marriage records); 2) In 1910, she is living with her second husband, James County, in Washington County, Iowa. Also in the home is her daughter Nellie M Mathews, who was found on the 1900 census of Erath County. She and Mitch Mathews were evidently divorced before 1905, because there are two County children born after that time. 3) Mary is found on the 1920 census of Washington County, Kansas, with her 3rd husband, John Davis. Living next door is her daughter Nellie Mae Mathews Green, who is married to Roy Green.

Mitch Mathews was born in August 1868 in Wales. On the 1910 census of Palo Pinto County, Texas, Mitch is said to be a widower. I cannot find him after 1910. Living next door to him is James Mathews, 62, who was also born in England. James is also a coal miner like Mitch.

If you are a member of ancestry.com, look up the Koch Family Tree. If you have any questions, let me know. I might be able to answer specific questions. I am not related to this family. I just enjoy doing the research.

Find "Manuel" Johnson in 1900 Milam and he was providing shelter for Lilly Lewis, another niece. "Johnson" was possibly the maiden name of Jack Lewis' wife?

One of the children was identified as George Stephen Keith, born 1789 in Knox Co, TN, died 18 Aug 1859 in Erath Co, TX. George had married Rebecca Crane, born 1798, no death data. THEY were the parents of Gabriel G. As a stab in the dark are there any family groups that may have any old bibles, etc you may be aware of? Again thank you!

Hi,

I think this will be hard to prove from any kind of death record. The first court house in Erath County was wooden and it burned in 1866 and many important records were lost. For additional info, go to Erath County History, www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txerath/history.htm.

There should be will and probate records but maybe they were destroyed also.

Also the county was formed in 1856 so he lived and died there very early in the county's existence. You can contact the County Clerk's office, http://co.erath.tx.us/countyclerk.html and ask about any death records that old.

There are two places to contact for an obituary (hopefully a newspaper was in operation that early).

Library volunteer at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txerath/lookup.htm

OR
Erath County Genealogical Society, www.dublinlibrary.org/ECGS
Successful Searching!
Hi,

I couldn't find a Lingleville Cemetery but there is a Beth Haven Cemetery in Erath Co. and some of the web sites show it in Lingleville. However, it's located out in the county.

I searched all of the web sites on line but didn't find her. This is an old cemetery that has been maintained on a volunteer basis. If she was buried without a tombstone, her record of burial has probably been lost. Probably your best bet is to contact the folks who have already indexed the cemetery. Here's the list of web sites.

Tombstone Transcription project, www.usgwtombstones.org/texas/erath.html

Erath County Cemeteries, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pairplace2...
Scroll down to Erath Co.

USGenWeb Archives, www.usgwarchives.net/tx/erath/cemetery.htm

Cemeteries of Erath County Texas, www.cemeteries-of-tx.com/Wtx/Erath/ListErath.html

Erath County Cemeteries, www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txerath/cem/cemeteries.htm
Successful Searching!

They lived in Dublin, Gorman and Moran.

I don't know exactly the age of the photo, it is not a cabinet card or CDV, it is a modern type photograph. The hair styles and clothing looks about 1920s-1930s.

If I figure out who Griffin was, I will post here.

Strangely there is a Fort Griffin in Shackleford county, that makes my searches more difficult.

There is no Moran County in Texas, and Gorman is near the SE border of Eastland County, between Dublin and Eastland. I looked for Griffins in the 1920 census of Erath and Eastland counties and found none with the occupation "photographer".
I would like to know where Griffin was if you ever find him. I am interested in photography in that area and era.

Hmmm, I have a photograph taken of a couple that I am trying to identify. The photo has the studio name of Griffin on the photo holder. The photo was in with photos of a Townsend family that lived in Dublin, Erath county and Gorman, Moran county Texas. I was hoping the studio was in one or the other areas, it would help narrow it down a lot.

I've viewed your tree and wonder why you designate Francis' siblings "private"? Both are deceased and that's info that'll help ensure accuracy of searches. Nevertheless, the Dunn(s) siblings of Clifford and Wyonia were not long-lived! There's always an exception and she was Elvira Ann (nee: Dunn) Capps (21 May 1856 - 31 Aug 1942) who died in Dallas. Their parents were William Henry Dunn, born about 1839 in Alabama, and Narcissas Simms, born about 1820 in Alabama. Find them 1870 AL-Choctaw-Township 13-Image 7 then 1880 TX-Hill-Precinct 2-073-Image 22. Hill borders Bosque's eastern boundary and that's why there are records in both counties. W. C. Dunn wed Mattie Elizabeth Mears, 26 Feb 1893 in Bosque. After 1900 Erath, Clifford's found 1910 OK-McIntosh-Ryals-0076-Image 12 with new wife Nanna B., three stepsons, and two sons via Lizzie. Clifford must have expired prior to 1920 'cause Nanna listed as head of household. His stepsons enumerated with surname Dunn. Sons William Francis Dunn (18 Jan 1894 - 29 Mar 1992) and Cebern P. Dunn (19 Jun 1899 - 2 Jul 1961) died in Kern, CA.

Clifford was her uncle by "blood". His sister, Wyonia, wed Lemuel Hankins, 7 Nov 1883 in Bosque County, TX. Guessing both died early after giving birth to Frances Pearl, Lonzo Callaway, and Minnie? Are you encountering difficulty researching! I'm not related, courtesy lookup!

Reuban and Frances were brothers of my GGGrand Mother Sarah Jane McCoy. When the war started her husband Asa Williamson joined the 10th company H. He was my GGGrandfather. He joined in October 1861, Reuben and Francis joined in Feb 1862. I remember seeing records of Reuben still being with his unit after Franklin. Why, I don't know, but Asa never returned to Texas either. He went home to Kentucky. Maybe Rueben went with him.

Point you in the right direction and you'll "git 'er done", huh?(lol) For Parilee Oakes, add 1910 Colorado-Precinct 1-District 0019-Image 29. That same image has sons Arthur and John. Image 28 has son Thomas. Confident you'll grab the ball and run with that? Nolie wed James A. Johnston and they're found 1910 Bexar-San Antonio Ward 6-District 0045-Image 11, 1920 Bexar-San Antonio Ward 6-District 72-Image 21, and 1930 Bexar-San Antonio-District 107-Image 22. Nolie Johnston (19 Oct 1878 - 5 Aug 1938).

Thanks for accepting my invitation for joint research of this family! Everyone has something to bring to the table and 'sharing' strengthens the "community bonds". James Richard Fleming's widow and kids found 1910 Tarrant-Fort Worth Ward 6-District 0120-Image 30. FYI, men born 1872-1901 were draft eligible for WWI. If they were patriotic, most registered and were usually residents of the county of registration. That's true of Richard Ross Fleming who registered in Bexar County with a wife and child. They're found 1920 Bexar-San Antonio Ward 4-District 62-Image 24. They were: Richard R. Fleming(32), Cora(30), James R.(7), and Fern(35). Richard was an attorney and possibly following his father's path? However, he died 17 Mar 1930 and the death certificate viewable/printable https://familysearch.org/ His widow Cora and son, Dick, found 1930 Bexar-Precinct 5-District 167-Image 16. Cora remarried and died as Cora Henrietta Watson (1 Jul 1889 - 30 Sep 1971). Their son James Fleming (24 Jan 1912 - 30 Jan 1975) died in Bexar County. Ferne Fleming (30 Apr 1880 - 7 Feb 1968) also died in Bexar County and never married. No info found on Harve Fleming after 1910. Mattie Fleming wed Clyde Herd Milliken and there are several public family trees viewable on ancestry.com.
