I started off researching the family of Cornelius A (C.A.) Rogers of DeSoto County, MS because I was interested in his father, Hiram King Rogers. I found Cornelius and 2nd wife, Jennie B, in Texas in 1900. In 1910, his mother in law, Sarah Martin was living in their household. The enumeration appeared to say she was married twice, so I wasn't sure if Cornelius wife was a Martin. I went back and found a J.M. Martin and Sarah Martin back in DeSoto County, MS in 1870. In their household were three children: James K (age 15); Melvina (age 3) and Virginia B (age 1). With the gap in the children's ages, I wondered if he was actually the couple's child. (I don't remember about 1860). By 1880 J. M. and Sarah were in Collin, TX and James K is out of the house, but Melvina and Bell are still at home and they have a 3rd child, Joseph age 6.
I was still unsure who Cornelius wife really was and the obit that names her DOES connect their family. In 1930, Melvina Mays and Jenny Rogers are living together in Wichita Falls, TX. I thought they were likely sisters but they gave differing information about their parents birth places. (Which is an area that we all know is completely unreliable). This must be Melvina and Virginia B. But how could Jennie be called a Sister In law? I still have a couple other questions but will stop here and hope to hear from anyone working on this extended family. S. C. McKenzie.
