Will not find them! In 1,000 examples, I'll bet the initials (R L) stand for Robert Lee as in an honor to Gen. Robert E. Lee. I'll win 75% of those bets! Having said that and familiar with the geography of East Texas, find Lee "Sherrel" in 1880 Titus-Precinct 2. Franklin was actually carved out of Titus County. In 1900 Franklin-Precinct 1 find an 18-year old widow: Ethel Sherrell in the McClure household. That may have been the child-bride? During that era, "widowed" was often used to describe people of failed marriages. It get's "squirrelly"! Robert Lee Sherrell registered for WWI Draft in Johnston, OK. His, then, wife was Etta as in Mary Etter Sherrell (16 Sep 1886 - 25 Nov 1935) who died in Wheeler, TX. Her maiden name was Sherrell and that's as far as I'm going on that. All speculation!

I'm trying to find a record of the marriage of John Henry Brooks and Lois Mebane. It would have been before 1940, but I don't have much more information than that; I can't find either of them in the 1930 census.

TX Vital Records -
The Texas Vital Statistics law to register births and deaths was not passed until 1903. Texas was then and is now a dual registration state which means the local registrars retain a copy of all birth and death records for the events that take place within their jurisdiction and the state retains the original of all birth and death records for the entire State of Texas. However, the statutes for registering these events were not made mandatory until 1926. However, many local registrars did not adhere to the statutes until the late 1930’s or early 1940’s. This means some records reside only in the local registrars’ files and not with the State.

STORY - Samuel Garner WELLS
Believe to be from St. Louis, Mo.
Census report of Franklin County, Tx. 1900 lists S.G. (54), S.J. (wife - 34), Moses (16), Silas (14), Allen (12), E.A. (daughter Annie - (10)), Carrie (8), Nevada (6), A. (Arabelle (2), and Apolona (2). Also says father and mother were born in Ky. and Sarah's mother and father in Texas. Samuel and Sarah had been married 21 years at this time.
See 1910, even though Samuel and Jenny were dead by this time, Arabelle appears as an orphan of (I think) 12 years.
Possibly had home at Edgewood or Jacksonville, Tx. which the oldest child, Joseph may have claimed according to Carrie Wells.

Annie [Wells] Lambert tried to claim it about 1935-1939 at Jacksonville as which time she would have had to swear she was the only remaining child living, which she was not. She was not successful at this.

STORY - [from another researcher]
Best information as this time says Jenny and Samuel both died about 1904 in a measle epidemic, but I can get no sure evidence of this as the location of death was supposed to be Wills Point, Tx, but I can find no records of this.
I did find the death certificate of a Mrs. Wells that died in another small town close by, but there is nothing to show if it was or was not Jenny.

Paula, you've done a lot of work! Vikki and I have exchanged information and confirmed relationships, and your information is most helpful. Diana, referenced with the Ingram history in your posting, is my cousin. I posted that family search info, but now recognize some of it is wrong.

A.L. Temples' only son (as far as is known) with Louisa McClung was William Watts Temples, found as W.W. Temples. A.L died 1862 as result of wounds from Civil War after medical discharge, Louisa married Glover. WWT married M.A. Arnold (sometimes Arnal which is probably misspelling) in Jan 1877 and Safronia Rebecca Armstrong in Dec 1881; he also died young. Safronia Rebecca Armstrong Temples married Palmer, also a widower, with whom she had a child (Martha Jane, known as Margie). He left here because she didn't want to go west with him without all of her children. I've learned that the name Palmer was often pronounced "Parmer" or variations by those of the deep South. There are two letters from Melissa Ann (known as Emma for M.A.), to her brother Ewing (half brother) and sister Maggie (half sister), in which she references Grandma Coffey. But I have no idea who Grandmother Coffey really was.

You cannot know how excited I am about this. If your Melissa eloped with Steve Swindell they are indeed the same person. She was my great grandmother. She had one daughter, my grand mother, Clara Victoria Swindell Davis, then my mother, Clara Mae, then me Victoria (Vikki) Anna Caple Kaelin. No one in the family knows anything about Melissa. She died about 1917/1918 when my grandmother was only 2 or 3 years old. Steve remarried to Della Barnhouse who had 7 children, Melissa and Steve had 5 then Steve and Della had 6 more.
Melissa died in Tishamingo, Johnson County, Oklahoma. After her death the family moved to Arkansas.
Does anyone in the family have a pic of Melissa? If so I would love a copy. Also will exchange any info. I have pics of my grandmother and her brothers, Guy, Wilburn (Bill), Herman and John Ray. Melissa had 12 children, only 5 survived. My grandmother was the baby.

Melissa Ann Temples was known as Emma (for M. A.) within her family. She eloped with Steve Swindell. William Watts Temples married Safronia Rebecca Armstrong 9 Dec 1881, after his first wife died, and they had 5 children, 4 of whom survived to adulthood. Maggie Lousia, Ewing Lindsey, Lewis Harvey (my grandfather), Laura Verona, and Willie (probably William). Willie died of a snakebite when he was 13 months and 5 days old (he picked up a "stick" to throw but it was a rattlesnake that bit him on the right hand). Maggie, Ewing, and Lewis lived, raised families, and died in Hopkins Co. Emma was their half sister.

I had my grandma send me a copy of her family tree and I stand corrected that the name is Rohus. There are two Saras listed- one born to Scotty hedgecoth mother Lena Tomilson and one born to Marion m Rohus and mother Eve m Morris. Unfortunately I do not have information passed that other that her brothers and sisters names and grandparents names.

I know that people have been researching him for probably close to a decade at least. Which brings these questions on Samuel to mind:

1. How did this name come up as the father? I know the 1900 census has him as SM or SG. It's scribled and hard to read. Sons Mose and Sam have the name of dad as John on death certificates. Son Allen has Joseph as dad on his death certificate. Oldest child, Joseph's ceath certificate is left blank. I haven't found anything on the other children.

2. How can the only document for this man be the 1900 Census? I can't find any land record, birth records of kids, school record, or military record.

3. Where did he get married? According to the Census, he was married 21 yrs. That would make the marrage event in 1879.

I am not related. My name is Paula, I was born in Hopkins Co in 1950 and my parents were born in Franklin County.

I believe the marriage in Franklin County Texas in 1895 is the correct couple as it is noted in the 1900 census that "Steve" and "Emie" had been married 4 yrs as of June 1900 with their 5th wedding anniversary being 30th of July 1900. I found it odd that she was listed as "Emie" in the census of 1900.

It is for certain that the children of W W Temple(s) and Saphronia Rebecca Armstrong from Upshur county wound up in Hopkins County which is the county just west of Franklin county. Three of the four death certificates identify their being born in Upshur county.

After I could not find Melissa A or M A Temple(s) in the 1880 census then I "cleared the board" and just searched for Temple(s) b. Texas abt 1878 and found Emma in Upshur county which is just southeast of Franklin county with Camp county between them.

The only other explanation that I might think of is that her mother remarried before the 1880 census and she was listed with stepfather's surname. That happened quite often.

The Swindell's are an example of that in the 1930 census even with the last name being wrong, big error on the enumerator Ressie Gentry.

It sure would be grand to find a death certificate in Oklahoma for Melissa Ann and hoped it had the correct information. Or if anyone has done extensive research on the family of W W Temple and S R Armstrong to know if they had a half-sister Emma who married someone else. W W Temple(s) two marriages in Upshur county is all that is listed on the familysearch.org website.

I even explored the possibility of M A Arnold also being a Melissa but did not do further research on the Arnold's in Upshur county. I also did not explore the other "Temple's" that married in Franklin County.

Here is a pedigree from FamilySearch. I do not known who submitter is or was but the Coffee name shows up again.

She was my great grandmother thru her daughter Clara Victoria Swindell. Then my mother Clara Davis Caple then me Victoria Anna. My mothers bible states the family thought Melissa was adopted.

HOPE--Wilburn Frank Clark, 80, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at a local hospital. He was born October 28, 1928, to Wilburn F. and Rosie Alford Clark in Nevada County.
He was an Army Air Corp/Air Force veteran, an oil field worker, cattle and chicken farmer, and former owner/operator of Diamond C Feed and Seed Store in Prescott. He was also a Presbyterian and was preceded in death by his parents; by his son, Joe Clark; by his brother, Cloyce Clark, and by three sisters, Thelma Singleton, (Lura) Juanita Reed, and (Alpha) Dee Swindell b. abt 1916 AR.
Survivors include his wife, of 55 years, Helen Power Clark, of Hope; one daughter, Enola Gay Stout, of Hope; four grandchildren, Nathan Stout, Lea Stout, Ashlea Hill, and Joseph Clark; three great- grandchildren; three sisters, Hattie Phipps and Quentin, of Longview, Texas, Mattie Green and Joe, of Doddridge, and Jean Henson, of Waskom, Texas; one sister-in-law, Doris Clark, of Shreveport, La.; a special niece-in-law, Barbara Hackney, of Bensenville, Ill., and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2009, at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Hope with Mr. Harley Sisson and the Rev. Will Green officiating. Arrangements are by Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope. Family received friends on Sunday, March 22, from 2-4 p.m. at Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope. Sam Wells, born in 1900 was my grandfather. He was the baby and his middle name was Allen. The 1900 Census leaves out two sons, Joseph, the oldest and Sam, who was born three months after the census was taken.

Ester (or perhaps Easter or Hester), the first wife of Rufus, continues to be a mystery. His mother, I now know, was Nancy St. Clair, born in North Carolina and married to Elijah Williams in Lincoln County Tennessee. Cannot find the family in 1860, but perhaps they broke up for a time. I see a young Rufus Williams living with a Moses Williams in Missouri. Perhaps Rufus stayed with them as the family made the move to Texas? Perhaps Elijah fought in the Civil War? Such a mystery! I have been unable to locate the parents of Elijah or Nancy.

Elizabeth married Thomas W. Gill, father of Loranzo/Lorenzo Burrough Gill. J. B. Burkhead married Francis M. LNU then Mary Elizabeth Cox.

It is "all" so fulfilling! Walter Whitfield Deshazo's son Evan Bennett (26 Oct 1887 - 28 Jun 1967) married Lucy Pearl Moulton (17 Jul 1890 - 10 Nov 1968). Lucy's sister Janye (2 Nov 1880 - 27 Apr 1950) was the second wife of Talbott W. Gill. While assisting research of the Gill family, I observed Mrs. E. B. DeShazo was the informant on Janye Moulton Gill's death certificate.
