Darlene, I'm interesting in information regarding a Roberta Maldanado who went to Pearsall High School in about 1953. Could that be your mother? I'm distantly related to Ben Duncan and taught in Pearsall in '53 and '54 and am trying to locate some of my former students.

What about the Arnold-surname? I do not find a public family tree that connects the dots. Let's fix that? Your first reply did not mention brothers J. T. (15 ar 1915 - 12 Dec 1936) or Frances Harlan (1 Aug 1923 - 9 Sep 1997). They also had a sister Ruth A. Higdon (9 Jul 1910 - 27 Jun 2002). I'm not related just hopelessly addicted to genealogy!

She lived east of Derby or Melon, I believe. That was her married name, however.

Not only does Capt. R.H. Williams' name appear in books, he himself wrote a book in his later years called "With the Border Ruffians." Some of the names in the book he disguises (Gen. Bee becomes Gen. Wasp, etc.) and some are fully recognizable. He mentions the Nueces Massacre in his book with considerable sympathy toward the German Texans who were ambushed.

Capt. Williams was active in the CSA. TX State library archives show that he had the command of the mounted volunteers of Frio County, 3rd Frontier Division of the Texas State Troops. The only record I have shows 1863. Another source says the unit "never fully organized," so I suspect this Frio County duty was a sort of sideline for him. Capt. R.H. Williams served at one time under the cruel Capt. Duff and, regrettably, is reported by some sources to have participated in the Spring Creek massacre near Harper TX.

The book is in paperback and is entertainingly written.

As for Jake Vinton, he lived and ranched out near Frio Town near the Hilers, Blackallers, Slaughters, Woodwards, Louis Oge, and a few others. I'm rather certain that he's mentioned in the publication "Frontier Times." There's an online index to that publication, but I think you'll have to visit a library or the Frontier Times Museum in Bandera to read the actual text of the old magazines.

I knew several of the Wood family, including Ira (a farmer who lived east of Dilley), Ila (a Wood by marriage who owned and operated a dry goods store in downtown Dilley), Ila's son Chester, wife Suzie Mae and sons C.B. and Bryan. They're all deceased, although C.B. has two sons--in San Antonio perhaps.

Claude Wood was a barber and cut my hair as a child. He died in relatively recent years. I knew U.A. Bryan in the Dilley Post Office with Ralph Crawford and Mr. Grocie, but I'm thinking the U.A. I knew was born considerably after 1883. My mother's 91 and remembers some things. I'll ask her when U.A. went to work for the Post Office. (Don't hold your breath--but I'll certainly give it a shot and get back in this board if she remembers anything worth relating.)

I also remember Pete Wood, a brother-in-law to Ila. (I'm sorry--can't remember her husband's name at the moment.) Pete lived in Dilley for a few years but moved elsewhere in the 1940s, I'd guess.
I visited the cemetery a few years ago was sad as it appeared cars were parked on some graves and a helipad most likely built on others. My great aunt mentioned putting flowers from her wedding on a Harris grave I think was probably a young child will have to research. The Ciy just had a proclamation about the Harris family who were early settlers of Dilley. I sad about the care of the cemetery there is also a cemetery on the other side of Dilley looked quite large but most of the stones have been destroyed.
The now used cemetery was originally my great grandmothers exempt allotment Josephine Flora Harris. The first buried there was is said to be my Uncle who died of food posioning when he was a year old. I will visit there around Jun 23.
Walter Hart

Brooks family in Frio and Atascosa County, Texas

I'm researching any Brooks family members who resided in Frio and Atascosa County in the late 19th and early 20th century. As a minimum, they lived in Moore and Big Foot as well as communities in Atascosa County.

I'm particularly interested in Oliver 'Ollie' Thomas Brooks, born 26 Sep 1907, and died 22 Jan 1914 at age 6. He died as the result of a rattlesnake bite. Ollie shows up in the 1910 Atascosa county census, but I'm unable to find any other documents. He's not listed in the Texas death index. I do know that the family moved to Big Foot in Frio County sometime after 1910 before finally moving to San Antonio by 1920. Thank you.

Elizabeth Ross I believe was married to John Ross from Ireland. Elizabeth and John had seven children. Three I know lived to marry and have chlidren. James was the second child. James and Ann were born in mississippi. James and Ann had five children that I knew of before 1880. I just found james and ann in Frio this week. There children, were Riley, William, Mittie, Sallie and William Hugh Ross. Riley and the first william were not in the 1880 census in Grant county, Madison Twp, Arkansas. I just found William Hugh in Val verda Co Texas. Would like to share info. Your posting was along time ago. Hope you see this

And keep in mind that the Scots were organized along clan lines, so belonging to the clan did not necessarily mean being a direct relation (father, grandfather, etc) of someone such as Robert Bruce. Here is a link to the Wallace tartan design.

http://www.clanwallace.org/tartans2.html

Yes, they are. However, the Bible was written many years after the events by numerous authors in Hebrew, rewritten, translated into other languages, then English. That is obviously not the case with Mr. Sowell's work. He interviewed Bigfoot in the ranger's home in 1896 and states that he is merely a relative of Sir William and Robert Bruce. You and many others have claimed that Bigfoot was a direct (is there any other kind?) descendant of these Scotish patriots without showing how. It's like someone named Washington saying they are descended from the first U.S. president even though he had no known children.

Bigfoot was tough and heroic on his own merits, not because he had royal or Godlike ancestors. I've been researching Bigfoot for many years and presently his Wallace line does not break the wall of limited Scotish records to the Middle Ages.

Passages of the Bible are open to misinterpretation. Your "near" relative conclusion is not contested. Is that the same as "close kin"? However, Andrew Jackson Sowell's narrative is referenced in the TSHA Article.

The Handbook of Texas is a good source for general information, but it isn't always accurate and I've corrected them a few times. I prefer primary and contemporary documentation myself. Bigfoot always said he was a "near" relative (not a descendant)of Sir William and Robert Bruce. You can get this statement from the horse's mouth in A.J. Sowell's writings on Bigfoot.

Bigfoot Wallace isn't a proven descendant of Sir William Wallace or Robert Bruce and never claimed to be. I don't believe there is any evidence that Sir Wallace and his wife fathered a child in their brief time together. The Hollywood affair with the future Queen of England also seems unlikely. Sorry Wallaces.

I have a book that was written about Bigfoot Wallace and it was dedicated to my GG grandfather. They were very good friends. My GG grandfather's picture is in it. I will scan through it and see if I can find any familiar names that you mentioned.

I am searching for information on C.J. Kinzel family of Merrill, Wis. My ancestors are Frank A. Kinzel and his son Julius R. Kinzel. They immigrated from Tyssa, Austria in 1889 to Phillips, Wis. to work in the lumber industry. I am also seeking info for a daughter, Caroline, born abt. 1900. The mother died shortly after. The family disbanded. Daughter, Pauline, to Duluth, Mn - Josef to Michigan - Frank and Julius to Tennessee. I believe Caroline was taken in by a relative or neighbor. Possible the C.J. Kinzel family was related. Any infomation is greatly appreciated. Thank YOu! Pat Wisney
