Thank you. I am not familiar with Ambrose Hurley - but I was aware of his brother Charles. This Hurley family was well established in Galveston before my Hurley's arrived. I don't know if the families are connected - but so far I have no evidence that they are. Appreciate the info though. You never know.
Kevin

I came across this obituary while doing some Galveston research.

THE GALVESTON DAILY NEWS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1897.
Death of a Veteran
Houston, Tx., Dec. 30. -Ambrose J. Hurley, an old and much respected citizen, passed away this morning at 10 o'clock at his residence, 1910 Travis street. Mr. Hurley was 59 years of age and was well known and popular in business circles in this city, where for many years he held a position of trust with the Sam Allen lumber company. He was also secretary of the Acme lumber and manufacturing company. He was
reared in Texas and was a brother of the late Charles Hurley, at one time mayor of Galveston, and a half brother of Mr. George A. Brarnard of this city. He was a gallant soldier in the late war. He went out as
sergeant of company B of the Second Texas regiment and at the close of the war was captain. He was in the battle of Shiloh and other terrible battles fought by the western army In Kentucky, Tennessee, Mis-
sissippi and Georgia. He was captured at the fall of Vlcksburg, but was held only a short time, when he was exchanged, and then went into service on the lower Texas coast. In his war service he always earned the highest regard of his men and his superior officers. He leaves a wife and six children, two of whom are grown, to mourn his death. While always a pleasant companion and warm friend, he was never talkative and Inclined to be remarkably reticent.
He was about fifteen years in the employ of Mr. Sam Allen, and by those who knew him best, was held in the highest regard.
The pall bearers selected are Ernest McAshan, William Christine, W. Herring, Sam E. Allen, H. T. Keller, and S. E. Jones.
Deceased had been ill a long while, but on account of his rather better condition early this morning his death, which came as quiet as a gentle slumber, was a severe shock.
I have just started exploring my family history. One of my Great Aunts, last name Campbell, originally from Ireland moved to Saskatchewan via Scotland and married a homesteader named Arthur Stelter who had moved (with his father?) from across the border in the USA and was farming in Ceylon, Saskatchewan. This would have been some time in the first half of the 20th century. If you or any reader has any further information on the Stelter family in Saskatchewan I would be very happy to hear about it.

Hi Casey,

I have no idea why the records were still in the orphanage. There were a number of boxes, books, desks, tables, etc. in the basement. There were still shelves with writings on it, along with a freaky weird room under the stairs with a sign to keep out because it belonged to "Mr. Bluebeard" or something like that. Frankly, the place was a bit frightening, especially that basement. The owner just left everything intact. I did reach out to the State/City and that's when I found out that their records (or what they kept) were also destroyed in Ike.
Jennie was born in Massachusetts but I've yet to find anything in the Masschusetts vital records.

I'm looking for information on Isidore's parents Isaac Lovenberg and Fleurette (Laurier/Deslaurier). I am currently researching an Antoinette Lovenberg who lived in New Orleans until 1878. Please drop me a PM.

My husbands name is James Ray Balducci, His father was John Elmer Balducci, born to Julius and Adrianna Balducci. We have been trying to find info on Adrianna for some time. We recently took a trip to Galveston and visited the Cemetery she was reported to be buried in, however, there was not a headstone or marker of any kind. Feel free to contact us at js2avants@yahoo.com. I seldom use Ancestry so I may not get your message if posted here. Thank you so much for this info. Sincerely, Sue Avants-Balducci

Earlier today, I quickly scanned for your Hurley(s) and found one tree with Michael, son of Daniel Hurley. Next, I accessed familysearch for the uncles and found lifespans for: John (10 May 1857 - 2 Sep 1936), Timothy (15 Apr 1868 - 18 Apr 1940), and Dennis (24 Dec 1876 - 15 Oct 1944). Using the parental search option (John Hurley and Nora Reagan), I also found death certificate for Nora Collins (26 Feb 1874 - 28 Apr 1958). Then the football game began and I stopped!

I am not researching the Hurley's, but there was a Hurley family that lived in High Island in Galveston County. My dad was born in 1932 and there was a Jay Hurley that was about his age that he went to school with in the 30's, 40's, and possibly the early 50's. My dad has passed so I cannot ask him any details. I did find them in the 1940 census. The father was H Wilton b 1908, the mother Theo b 1914, and the son Jay W b 1935.
Karen

Curious if anyone is researching Hurley's in Galveston. My great-grandfather, Daniel Hurley, emigrated from Ballymacshoneen to Galveston in 1899, to live with a brother, Michael. It appears Michael had been in Galveston for a few years living and working with uncles (John, Timothy, and Dennis). My g-grandfather left for Boston in about 1900 - no idea why other than he had sisters there.

The Ballymac Hurley's had cousins in Galveston - Whelton's, Sullivan's and Regan's. In fact, when Pat Sullivan was the Police Chief, there were a fair number of "cousins" hired as Officers.

Anyways, just trying to piece the families together...

Hi
I talked to my sister after I sent you the reply and we both had one question, why were the records from the home left at the orphanage? Seems to us both that they were/should have been considered State/county property. It doesn't make any sense to us.
We both agreed to help any way we can and know of several other "inmates" from our time in there. We've started compiling a list of names and would be happy to send it to you. As I said before, we've been curious about others from our time there and would like to see how many more are still around.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Casey
Hi there. Thanks so much for the post and sharing your information. I've been in the house and I know of a few files from the 1950's exist. But all in very bad condition since Hurricane Ike flooded the basement of the house. Since it is privately owned, all the files belong to the owner. The historical society and the Galveston Children's Home do not have information or pictures of the orphanage or actual records. Again, all of that was destroyed in Ike. I am still working on the book. It has taken so much longer than I've like since such little information is available and I have to depend on folks like yourself for any stories or history of the time spent there.

I would love to talk to you further about your experiences at the orphanage. I can be reached at kraley2005@yahoo.com if you wish to contact me.

Hi there. Thanks for your post and sharing the information with me. It's been an on-going labor of love and information from folks like yourself is extremely useful. If you want to share your pictures, I would recommend contacting the Rosenberg library in Galveston. http://www.rosenberg-library.org/

They have a historical archive section and would love to have it for the files. There are so few pictures left.

Also, if you'd like to share scanned copies of the pictures with me, please let me know.
My Grandfather was in the home in 1932,Not sure if galveston or The Buckner home in Dallas.I would think Galveston since that is the area we are from, story is that she just couldn't take care of him and put him in and then later she got him out. I have no information, and had been waiting on the records to be posted on that year. Just read the post of everything getting lost because of IKE , Just made me sick at my stomach. But on a Good Note I have a lot of Group pictures from that time. Bunch of the kids and believe even couple people that work there.. Not really sure I just inhereted the pictures and there is no one to help with the mystery ... I know no one on my Grandfathers side. His name is Edward Hollis Brown ... Please let me know who I could maybe get in contact with on the pictures... would love to give copys to the Historical Site or even maybe even find out who some of the children are. Thanks

You asked for anyone who was in the Home. Well, my sister, 2 brothers and I were in there for about 4+ years. We weren't orphans, but my mother wasn't able to care for us, so she put us in there. We come up with the dates of 1952 +/- to about 1957 and were also wondering if any records still existed. We can name quite a few of the people who were in there with us during this time.
My sister and I were talking about this tonight earlier and we've basically blanked out most of our memories about this place, but we would be more than happy to help you anyway we can. There were good and bad times, good caring matrons and some you'd rather not remember.

Hi Karen,

Thank you for checking this for me. I've had the info. on the 5 who arrived on the Johann Schmidt in June 1857 - they are my great-great-great grandmother and four of her grown/nearly grown children. Her oldest son Conrad was my great-great grandfather.

Conrad arrived sometime 1 Jan. 1855 and 31 Dec. 1856 as his second son was born in Fayette Co., TX in 1856. Then Conrad's wife died sometime soon after...Conrad married again on 23 Feb. 1857 - Round Top, Fayette Co., TX.

My best guess is for Conrad to have arrived in 1854. This is from a 1900 Census and also from his 1867 voter registration card that stated he'd been in TX and the USA for 13 yrs.

A third cousin and I have started collection mis-spells of the last name - 31 different versions to date.

Conrad may have arrived at any of these ports:
Galveston
Corpus Christi
New Orleans

I've not found any of his extended family entering through NY and then down to TX.

My email is: info@ancestryintoart.com

I really appreciate the help with this...I've been at it off and on for months, the third cousin even longer, and we've yet to find anything definitive on Conrad's arrival.

Yesterday I contacted the church they belonged to in Round Top. The pastor indicated that there are old records as far back as the 1850s - all in German. They are going to see if there's a death date for Conrad's first wife and also a specific birth date or a baptismal date for the second son (the one born in TX).

It's just another attempt at narrowing Conrad's arrival date. He did come with wife and one child...possibly another sibling or more.

All the best,
susan

Thank you!

Now if I could just find out what ship/port Conrad Zwernemann (brother to the Ludwig Z. on the Neptune in 1853)arrived on in 1854. I went ahead and plugged his name into all the ships listed for 1854, '55, '56 for Galveston. I wonder if there's anything similar for New Orleans or Corpus Christi?

Best,
susan

Major Moses Park - obituary

The Galveston Weekly News (Galveston, Galveston Co., TX),
Tues, 18 Nov 1856, p. 1, c. 3

-------------------------------

Tuesday, November 11, 1856

Obituary -- We have to announce the death of Maj. Moses Park, who died on Sunday last [Nov. 9th] at his residence in this city, and was buried yesterday, his funeral taking place from the methodist (sic) church of which he had been a most worthy and exemplary member for some years past. The death of Mr. Park was not unexpected, as he had long been afflicted with the consumption, which, for the past five or six years, had been gradually undertaking his constitution and bringing him daily nearer to the last home of all. He had been a citizen of Texas for the last eighteen years [ca. 1838], and was well known to nearly all the older settlers of the country, by all of whom he was held in the highest estimation for his many virtues. In fact, we believe we may safely say that he lived and died without an enemy, for his strict integrity of purpose in all the transactions of his life, was above suspicion and his amiable and ancillary manners made friends of all who knew him. His widow is the daughter of our fellow citizen, David Ayres. She is now left with four children, mainly dependent on her own exertions, but she has the consideration to know that her loss is felt by many sincere friends, as a heavy loss to the community at large.

Oops, correction- JHN Muller was my great great grandfather. Anyways, I will try to scan it & email to you sometime next week. Do you have documents or have info on the Muller family tree? You are probably correct that John H N Muller was Johan since he has a daughter named Jacobina Johanna b 1856.

Hi,

That's so cool that you have the Müller's bible! Are you planning to scan it? If so, I would love to get a copy of the images. My email is rmckenzi (at) gmail (dot) com if you want to correspond off-board.

Captain Müller's wife Mary Verona Sophronia Wilde died 23 Feb 1900. I saw that his son John Jacob Müller died in Nicaragua but I didn't know how he got there. I only have five children for John Jacob Müller and Mary _:

Bernard, b. abt 1873
John, b. abt 1874
Mary Maud, b. abt 1877
Helen, b. Dec 1878
Edward, b. May 1880

Can you add the others, and do you know Mary's maiden name? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brookes

I have a copy of John Herman Nicholas Muller's bible. They spelled it Muller with an umlat over the u. He was my great grandfather. The handwriting is difficult to read but lists his wife as Grona or Srona Wild from some Canton in Switzerland. Captain John Muller, who died leading a charge across the field in the battle of Corinth, has a son named John. John's wife dies. He becomes heartbroken and hands his 8 kids to his sister then heads off to Nicaragua where he marries into with the Miskito Indians and has 12 children. One of them was my grandfather. Edit: rereading your post- the Muller Bible has John H.N. Muller's son John Jacob's birth as May 6, 1851. Mary was born March 3, 1861. Verona 19th May 1858. Do you have any info on where & when Capt. Muller's wife died?

I am not related, just doing a lookup for you.
Jennie's obit states she came to Galveston from New Orleans as a young child with her parents, Mr & Mrs I.C. Levy. You can find them on the 1870 Galv census as Isaac and Mina. The three Samuels children, Louis, Jennie and Adolph are enumerated as Levy. There are two younger (Levy) children,Mollie b 1862 & Max b 1868. Jennie's mother was Minna Posner as is on her half siblings death certificates.

Looking at NY passenger lists, it seems as if Minna and Louis and her husb, Hirsch age 27, came over Apr 21 1854 on the ship Elise.

I could not find anything else on him. But, there is a tree on ancestry that has Isaac Levy in it, wife is Minna Posner Samuels with her death in 1898.

Adolph died in 1870, Louis in 1909.

Rayedene Seal Graves

Hah, I got those notes! Aunt Tomie wrote them and someone thoughtfully show'd them at the Folmar reunion and then shared them with us! They're part of the documents I was attempting to upload when the power went out a few days ago. This tears it. I'm gonna have to get over my fear of crowds and come to the Folmar reunion this year. Sissy's been begging me to go with her for years, now, anyway. Maybe we'll bring mama & one of her sisters too, and represent Maggie O's lineage? Katy Lou married like 4 times too, but I only knew of Ed Fowler & Marchbanks (Marsbanks is how Tomie had written it).

Remember when I said 'according to some of our "Folmar cousins"'? Nancy et al are amongst that group. In fact, I'm a baby in the ancestry tracing department compared to the long time experience of a lot of other Folmar kinfolk. ;D______Regards to Mike, he said he's descended from Rebecca via a maternal link. I'm sure when he has the time and energy he'll get into his researching again! I am just as curious regards the Folmar/Skinner connection.
