Fortunatus William Bryan, son of Josiah Dupont Bryan and Margaret Ann Singleton Bryan, was born May 10 1833 in Barnwell District, South Carolina enlisted in Company D,56th Alabama Partisan Rangers,C,S,A. on September 1,1862. He served until the South surrenderd in April of 1865.He and his brother- in- law, his sisters husband, James L. Rogers served together throughout the war,They were paroled at Mobile,Alabama on May 19,1865 to return home to Choctaw County,Alabama. Shortly after their return home,Fortunatus, his wife( Sarah Elmira Rogers Bryan ) and children ( Fortunatus Cornelius, Josiah Dupont, William Henry, James Monroe, & John Davis ) ; his mother( Margaret Ann Singleton Bryan),his wifes parents (Cornelius and Elizabeth Rogers) his sister( ElizabethBryan Rogers) and her husband,( James L, Rogers) and children left Alabama for Texas, arriving in northeast Texas during the Fall of 1865 . Shortly after their arrival in Lamar County , Cornelius Rogers died( December 15 , 1865). After their arrival in Texas, five more children were born to Fortunatus Wiiliam & Sarah; Sarah Elizabeth, Mary Margaret, Martha Isabel, Jarrett Finney & Benjamin Franklin. The latter five children were born near Glory in Lamar County, Texas. The Bryan family moved to Hamilton County ,Texas during the 1880s.They operated a general store and hotel in Pottsville ,Texas for several years , until the early 1900s.
Many of the Bryans & other kin are buried in the Pottsville Cemetery. Fortunatus' mother, Margaret Ann Singleton Bryan ( b. Dec 7 1809 in South Carolina & d. jan 11 1892) is buried at Pottsville as is his mother - in - law, Elizabeth Anderson Rogers ( b. April 18 1810 in Mississippi and d. May 17 1885 ).
