I'll get a digital file to send to your email if you will send me an address to bill@vanrwhite.com ...also, please see if you can get any info regarding any relationships with my Jones family of Hardeman County TX. Info from my mother is that my great aunt, Lou Della Jones, had a man she was planning to marry killed in the war. She remained unmarried until her death. Perhaps they were friends and the poem was written or copied for her. The poem referenced the Spanish American War and Cuba as I recall and was dated 1954.

Info on any barbers who worked in Hardeman County about 1934 or so?

I am hoping someone might be able to help with the names of any barbers who were working in Hardeman County around 1934. My father was born and adopted in 1935 and I have recently learned information about his birth parents. The birth father was a barber by trade. The mother was a woman named Lana Bell Jenkins who lived in the Quanah, Hardeman, Texas area with her family until the late 30's. Unfortunately, I still don't know the name of his birth father but do know his birth father was of Irish descent, was a Baptist, and was a barber by trade. He was approximately 5-9 in height and was dark complected. I also now know the father had a sister who was blind and the father's parent were separated at the time my father was born. The father's name was supposedly something like McAnis or something similar, but that info has not been confirmed so it may not be correct. The other info about his descriptors and occupation has all been verified. Any help is greatly appreciated. It has taken me 3 years to learn the ID of his birth mother which I was thrilled to find out. Now I am hopeful someone might have that 1 small bit of information that will lead to me being able to identify his father.

On the death records I have it says they are buried in the Quanah Cemetery. I would like to know which cemetery they are buried in.

Need some help

I am hoping for some help from anyone who may have or who can look up someone in the Quanah, TX area. I just learned last week the identity of my adopted father's birth mother. She was shown in the 20's and 30's living in Hardeman County so I am assuming she attended Quanah High School. She was born about 1910 and probably attended high school from about 1924 or 1925 until 1927 or 1928 (assuming she graduated). She may also have been in the news for some reason or other and I am hoping someone might be able to find that out as well. I know I am asking alot but I have been seeking her identity for 3 years and now that I have it I am seeking any info I can find on her. I have already learned a lot from researching her here on Ancestry but am hopeful that someone out there might have even better info on her and/or her family, especially any other children she may have had. Her name was Lana Belle Jenkins. Her parents were Walter Francis Jenkins and Sarah F. Jenkins. I think the entire family moved to californai sometime around the middle 1930's. She later married a man in California named John Joseph Bartsch. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.
I am not related.

Marie Andrews was living with uncle George David Tipps in Childress Co in 1930. What leads do you have that they may have been in Hardeman County ?

I can not pinpoint her brothers who were not listed with Ora's other brother Claude. Ora's mother, Martha Tipps, was living in Nacogdoches in 1930 census with her brother Edwin Muckleroy she died in Nacogdoches Co in 1959 almost 99 yrs old, nor Ora's sister Eliza after 1910.

John Emmett Andrews' family, for the most part, were still in Childress County in 1930. The boys are not found as being listed in an orphan's home.

Ora Tipps Andrews remarried after the 1920 census and died in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches county 02 Oct 1929 as Ora Edna Burrows was married and buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, death record says she was born 24 Jan 1896 TX dtr of H S Tipps and Martha Jane Muckleroy.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txnacogd/cemeteries/cemind...
Oak Grove est. 1837 alt. name: American Located at the intersection of N.
I would like to see if someone could find a picture in a yearbook for Quanah High School for 1. Milton Leon Andrews or Leon Andrews, 2. J.D. or John or Jack Andrews, 3. Marie Andrews. #1 should have graduated about 1934-1935. #2 about 1936-1937 and #3 about 1929-1930. Also, if there is anything in the newspaper about any of these folks or their parents, John "Jack" Andrews 1893-1919 and Ora Andrews 1897- about 1930. I would be more than happy to pay for your time and expenses.

Thanks!

Carol Robertson

The only thing we have was the daughter obtaining a mortuary warrant.

The undertaker was Henry S Ramsey of Wilbarger preparing him for burial. No funeral home stated. Wilbarger Co does not have any information on Mr Ramsey. Last treating Dr was a Thomas A King.

The funeral home in Chillicothe in 1932 was operated in conjunction with a furniture store by Mr. and Mrs. Ed GEEO. After their deaths the business was operated by H.R. Ward. After Mr. Ward there have been 2 or 3 other owners. The current funeral home is:
Smith Funeral
14035 US Highway 287
Chillicothe, TX 79225
(940) 852-5121.
If you order the death certificates it will show which funeral home handled the burial. Since Mr. Barker died in Vernon, it is possible a funeral home there could have handled the funeral.

Hello from Texas!!

I have recently found a document spoken by John William Chewning in Sept 1969 and transcribed by persons unknown for Mrs. Ward Manning Chewning of LaGrange, GA.

I am not certain where this doc came from; most of my family has passed away, and I have been going through many old boxes. It was in a pocket of an old valise. For all I know, you gave it to us way back when.

But I would love to get in touch. Found a phone # for you in NO but it no longer is valid. I live in Austin now, contact me here and we will get in touch.

Sincerely, Debbie (used to be Harris) Stuart
(Deborah A. Stuart)

James Butler and Maud Whitener family location in 1910

I’m trying to locate my great-grandfather’s household on the 1910 census. His name was James Benjamin Butler and his wife was Maud Angeline Whitener. He appears on other censuses as follows:
•1900: James, in his father’s household in the Ball Ground District, Murray County, Georgia.
•1920: “J. B. Butter” in the Ball Ground District, Murray County, Georgia.
•1930: “James B. Butler” in Chatsworth, Murray County, Georgia.

He should be found in Texas in 1910. His first five children were born in Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas between 1907 and 1916. Moreover, his second son was born in Quanah on February 14, 1910.

I’ve searched every permutation of his name that I can think of in both Ancestry.com and FamilySearch (not just in Texas – the whole country). James, J. B., Jim, Butler, Butter. I’ve searched all Butlers born in Georgia in 1880, then again as a wild card search with the last name as But?er. I’ve also searched for his wife and his two oldest sons, Floyd David and James Benjamin, Jr, again with any name combination I could come up with.

I found James' sister, Mattie (Butler) Sampler and her husband in Quanah. His younger brother, William, lived with Mattie. I would have thought that Jim’s family lived somewhere nearby, but I’ve browsed through every page of the census images for Hardeman County and they are nowhere to be found.

Does anyone know where to find this family on the 1910 census?

Thanks,
Tonia Kendrick
www.toniasroots.net

You will have to refresh my memory. I don't recall that I mentioned pictures. . . only write-ups on different families, some with pictures and many without, in the CHILLICOTHE VALLEY AREA HISTORY published in 1987.

I just heard on the news that over 150 headstones were toppled or broken at the Quanah Cemetery last night. I just want to tell anyone that has loved ones in that cemetery how very sorry that I am and how terribly sick it was. The Sheriff says that if they catch the people who did it, they will be charged with first degree criminal mischief over $200,000. I hope they catch the people who did it! Evidently, the first person who was buried in the cemetery had damage to his headstone too.

Julie in Wichita Falls, TX

My name is Edna Harris. I am the daughter of Edwin Walker Harris and Olie Faye Combs Harris. My father died in 1956; buried in Hope Cemetery, Henrietta, Clay County, Texas. My half brother Marion and half sister Margie are both deceased. My parents divorced when I was very young so I did not know much about his side of the family. At the time of my dad's death, Marion Walker lived in Washington state.
I believe Marion later died in the Houston, Texas vacinity but I don't know the date.

Edwin Walker Harris had two brothers, Lonnie (Quanah, Texas) and Earl (Henrietta, Texas). I don't know any thing about Lonnie's children, but Earl had a son Jerry and a daughter Carol Ann with wife Fay. I do know Earl died many years ago.

Edwin Walker Harris born 6-27-1903; deceased 2-3-56
Birthplace - Gorman, Texas
Father - Henry C. Harris - birthplace Texas
Mother - Della Nipp - birthplace Texas
