OBITUARY
MRS. WILLIAM POWELL
Mrs. William Powell, nee Marilla
Lucretia Smith, was born in Batavia
Oatskill Co., N. Y., April 11, 1822. She
came to Pittsfield, O, in 1837, and in
1841 was married to David Davies. To
this union there were born four chil-
dren, three boys and a girl. Of these,
two are living, David, at Wellington,
and John, at Minneapolis. The girl
died in infancy, and the other boy gave
his life for the Union in ’64. The faith-
er, David Davies, who had nursed his
son in his last illness in the Army, died
soon after returning home. In 1869
she was again united in marriage to
William Powell, who is now one of the
most popular and well known cattle-
men of Texas.
They removed from Pittsfield to
Beecher, Ill., in 1872, and in 1893 to
Channing, Tex., where they lived until
the time of her death, January 19, 1901.
She had been a member of church since
the age of thirteen, and at the time of
her death was one of the most promi-
nent and influential members of the
M. E. Church at Channing. She was
also an active Sunday School worker.
The profuse and beautiful floral decora-
tions at her funeral in Channing held
January 21, the large number who were
present, and especially her class of
eighteen boys who attended in a body,
give evidence of the high regard in
which she was held at that place. Last
Saturday David Davies brought her re-
mains back to her former residence in
Pittsfield, where a brief funeral ser-
vice was held Sunday, at 2 o’clock,
conducted by Rev. Geo. O. Enders.
Few who have ever lived in Pittsfield
have been more prominent influen-
tial, who have been more missed than
Mrs. Powell.

through your columns to express our
sincere thanks to the many friends for
their expressions of sympathy and acts
of kindness during the sickness and
death of my late mother, Mrs. William
Powell. David Davies.
