Vona Sumpter, 75, of Whitney, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 in Dallas. She was born in Abbott April 8, 1928, daughter of Walter and Maudie Burton Nichols. She grew up in the Aquilla area and graduated from Aquilla High School. She married Gene Tennison, and he preceded her in death in 1950. She later married Chester Sumpter October 5, 1957, and he preceded her in death December 27, 1978. She lived in several locations while she supported her husband in the armed forces,moving to Whitney in 1974. She was a member and past officer of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #8571 of Whitney. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne and Royce Nichols.
Survivors include: three daughters, Bonnie Rice of Moody, Teresa Eubanks of Trinidad, Colorado and Darla Urbanovsky and husband, Al, of China Spring; three brothers, Dale Nichols, Lloyd Nichols and Troy Nichols, all of Aquilla; two sisters, Doris Boucher and Nell Hurley, both of Whitney; one sister-in-law; eight grandchildren;
and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 29, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney with Rev. Laraine Waughtal officiating. Interment followed at Prairie Grove Cemetery near Aquilla. Memorials may be made to the Central Texas Senior Ministry, 957 Corsicana Highway, Hillsboro 76645.
