Couldn't tell if you ever got an answer to where the Ropesville cememtary is: As you are driving through Ropes on Hwy 62, there is a paved road that goes over the railroad tracks by the grain silo, farm Rd 168 going east. take that road and the cemetarys a few miles down on your right hand side, at another intersection. There's some info on the cemetary and some of the headstones listed on the website called Find a Grave.

There was a Brown Food Market in Sundown, TX in 1941, owned by a Bill Brown. A Sundown HS alumni recently told me that he (the alumni)played in a band with two of the Brown boys, James and Gerald (Jerald?). Also, there was a Betty Brown in the 2nd grade in the 1947 annual. Do not yet know if she was a daughter of this Bill Brown.

Texasbird

I am trying to determine who the wife "Jean" 1915, of an uncle of mine was. His name was Virgil Thomas Brown 30 Apr 1913 KS - 6 Nov 1987.
According to the Texas Death Records and his Social Security Death record Virgil died in Levelland, Hockley Co., Texas. His body was transferred to Wichita, Ks for burial. He was born there and had other family buried in a certain Cemetery there. I found Jean's first name in
Virgil's mother obituary. She is not buried with Virgil.

I'm looking for Jean's nee, possible remarriage, death/burial and any children she may have had. I'm not sure if she and Virgil were divorced and she remarried or why she is not with him.

Jim Moore
DYK? Click on any username and a window opens to enable email(s). Don't be shy! Ask the tree's owner for verification of data. Based on marriage and census records, Caladonia Dickinson[sp] wed D. C. Parsons 28 Jan 1883 in Scott County, AR. That's extracted from Arkansas Marriages, 1851-1900. The 1900 TX-Collin-Precinct 1-District 1-Image 46 census indicates Dewit[sp] C. Parsons(41) and Lucey[sp](22) had been married for five years. She, Lucy, was enumerated as the mother of only two children and both were still living. They were James T.(4) and Rosa L.(1). Lucy was Lucy Belle Gibson. She and Dewitt died in Hockley County, TX. View 1880 AR-Scott-Tate-District 169-Image 2 for the Dickison[sp] family. Flip to Image 3 and you'll find the Gibson family with Lucy. There may be a trip to Scott County, AR in your future? The Dickerson surname was mostly "corrupted" on census records. View 1850 AR-Carroll-Osage-Image 7 and search for James M. Dickeson. In 1860 AR-Carroll-Prairie-Image 4, search for James M. Dickeson. In 1870 AR-Scott-Tumbleston-Image 7, look for James Dickerson. I gave the 1880 record earlier. Not related to any surname mentioned!

I am trying to find out of Caldedonia Dickerson is my Great Great Grandmother. My Grandmother was Callie D Swagerty. her Mother was Cora Pearly Parsons. Pearl died when my Grandmother was yound and she and her brothers were sent to live with Pearls parents, Dewitt C Parsons and Lucy Gipson Parsons. My Grandmother told me Lucy Gipson was her step-Grandmother and her real Grandmothers name was Callie also. I saw on a Parson family tree the name Caldonia Dickerson as Dewitts first wife. I am so excited. I found information on Caledonia Dickerson. Could Caledonia be the Callie my Grandmother Callie was speaking of? Please help if you have any information. Thanks and God Bless.

Their mother was Mary Ellen Reed Grubbs Liles and she lived in Vernon until her death May, 2008 at the age of 94. Her mother, my great-grandmother, was Martha Thurston Reed and she died many years ago when I was a young child. I believed she was 102 when she passed.

I recall my father mentioning the last name Simmons although I do not know any relatives currently with this last name.

Our family is so small... at least the family I know. I would love to know my relatives. Please contact me if you think we are related. Thank you.

You are welcome! Familiar with findagrave! Ada Blasingame's parents were John Allen Blasingame (25 Jul 1854 - 31 Dec 1933) and Lillie Susan King (17 Aug 1867 - 5 Jan 1946). Find them, with kids, in 1900 Navarro-Precinct 4-District 104-Page 37. Find Charles and Ada Spurgeon in 1910 Navarro-Precinct 2-87-Page 35. The inlaws are on the same 1910 census image. In 1910 Dallas-Farmers Branch-District 80-Pages 1 and 2, find eight-year old Vella(sp) with family. In 1900 KY-Warren-Goshen-District 108-Page 17 find the Medlin family misidentified as "Medley".

Thank you so much for your prompt response to my request. I did find the obit through Findagrave.com It does not mention his father or Mother but does list his children and his brothers ansd sister and also just that he had 9 half brothers and half sisters. 15 grandchildren and 32 geat grandchildren. I may have to be content with that information. There was no stone in the City of Levelland Cemetery but wonder if someone has placed one by this time.I found the stone for Charles and Vela.. Find a Grave
is a great site if you are not familiar with it. Again Thanks.

I agree with your math. However, I doubt the obit will confirm your suspicions? Charles Lee Spurgeon wed Vela Helen Medlin 20 Jan 1919 in Navarro County, TX. The three eldest Spurgeon kids were born prior to this event. Vela may have been the only mother they knew? I believe Charles' first wife was Ada Blas(s)ingame and she was mother to Johnnie Lee, Mildred Inez, and James Delbert? The timing of Charles' second marriage (1919) may indicate Ada died from the Spanish Flu Pandemic that killed 600,000+ in the United States? Possible additional sources for research are the social security applications for the eldest children? Mildred Inez (Spurgeon) Spence (19 Jun 1913 - 2 Mar 1999) died in Oklahoma City. Unsure of James Delbert Spurgeon, but someone of the same name died 6 Nov 1999 in Coolidge, Limestone, TX. That person's birthdate listed as 28 Jan 1919. I am not related!

Could someone look up an obit for me for Johnny lee Spurgeon died Oct 19 1998. I am looking for relatives of the Charlie Spurgeon family. My genealogy research has left me in doubt as to his mother. the information that I got was that his mother was Vela medlin, but the dates will not support that event. i am in the Spurgeon, McGowan, Thompson line and someimes I get confused, there must be 100's of Spurgeons in the Ellis County, Navarro County and the Hockley Counties that are related to my line in some way. An obit might shed some light on the ancestery. thanks

You did not reveal information on early ancestors? James Haley King, Luther's dad, died 16 Jul 1930 in Collingsworth County, TX. His death certificate is also viewable. Born 13 Jan 1853 in Hill County, TX, his parents were J. H. King and Charity Lindsey. The informant was J. L. King who I believe was the brother born after Luther? Find them in their parent's household in 1880 Johnson County, TX-Not Stated-District 81-Image 2. You have the 1900 image of Luther in Jack County-Precinct 1-District 34-Image 30? Review image 33 of the same county, precinct, and district? James H. King(48), Nancy(50), Josie(15), and Lee(13) lived next to John L. King(22) and Daisy(17). I'm probably providing information you already have, but it's your fault for not revealing more data! Thought I was on the trail of living descendants, but it vanished! Texas Birth Registry indicates Hattie Lou King and William Newton Milner were parents of Hattie Maxine (7 May 1929) and Billy Ray (5 Mar 1937) both born in Lubbock. Unable to trace grandchildren or deaths of grandparents? Perhaps they relocated to Oklahoma, my "weak spot" for genealogy?

This has not been answered yet? Sorry!!! Some Texas Death Certficates are viewable/printable online. Your computer must be configured with javascript to access same. Javascript is a free and safe download requiring approximately 15 minutes. Google javascript and follow the instructions, if needed? Access the certificates at http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?... Ready? Search for Mark Luther Taylor King (14 Feb 1875 - 18 Jan 1952) and Susie Ellen Phillips King (24 Mar 1876 - 16 Aug 1969). Luther's informant was Mrs. Hattie Millner, probably the Hattie L. you provided? Susie's informant was Mrs. Lloyd Horton-daughter-unsure which one? Digest that while I research further? OBTW! Add me to your Christmas Card Mailing List? I prefer the online variety. Stay tuned for more info?

Here we go! Have read your other postings and think you might be chasing the wrong Turners? Doyle Dean's parents were Allen H. and Pearl J. Turner. Find them, newlywed, in 1910 Bosque County, TX-Precinct 6-District 12-Image 3. Doyle was born after the census on 20 Jul 1910. In 1920 Lubbock County, TX, the family was in Precinct 3-District 175-Image 20. In 1930 they were in Lubbock-Idalou-District 19-Image 10. Doyle had at least two sisters and two brothers. Doyle's paternal grandparents were Allen G. Turner and Mary E. Graves, both natives of Mississippi. Great grandparents, paternal, were Stokley Turner of North Carolina and Susan Simpson of Tennessee. Great grandparents wed 1827 in Jones County, MS. Grandparents wed 1861, also in Jones County, MS. They are not a difficult trace plus a pedigree is viewable at familysearch.org. Perform an advanced record search for Allen G. Turner (16 Jan 1840 - 4 Oct 1919). Under "Pedigree Resource File", he was born in Jasper County, MS per Arlene Willis Tharp of Utah. You can purchase her GEDCOM or have fun researching youself. Some of Texas' Death Certificates are available for online viewing/printing. The address is http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?... Your computer must be configured with JAVASCRIPT to view these documents. Javascript is a free and safe download requiring approximately 15 minutes. Once you are able to access the website, lookup Allen H. Turner (7 Dec 1882 - 30 Aug 1976). The "H" denoted "Hiram". He also registered for WWI Draft in Lubbock,TX but the birthdate listed as 9 Dec vice 7 Dec. I am not related, simply responded to your plea for help!

Ropesville is on U.S. Highway 62/82 and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, in the southeast corner of Hockley County. It was the first settlement of Hockley County, developed when the Spade Ranch opened for colonization in the early 1900s. Early homesteaders were led into the area by Jim Jarrott in 1901. Later, when the South Plains and Santa Fe Railroad Company ran a line from Lubbock to Seagraves, the company agreed to build stock pens, switches, a sectionhouse, and a depot on land donated by Isaac L. Ellwood of the Spade Ranch. The Spade cowboys who constructed rope corrals to hold cattle for shipment wanted to name the depot Ropes, but the name was rejected by the post office officials since it was similar to another Texas settlement called Ropers. The name Ropesville was submitted and accepted. The depot still displays the name Ropes and is now a permanent part of the Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock. The actual townsite was laid out in 1917, the same year the Ropes school district was established. The first business was a general store opened by J. R. Evans, who also became the first postmaster when the post office was established in 1920. Eventually the Whitehorn Hotel and Cafe, a gin, and a theater followed. The First State Bank, the first bank in Hockley County, was organized on November 21, 1924. The first school, built in 1920, also served as a church. A high school was built in 1925. The First Baptist Church, the first church organized in the county (in 1921), was followed by the Methodist church, the Church of Christ, and the Church of the Nazarene. In 1926 editor Nyles Morris started the first newspaper, the Ropes Hustler. It became the Ropes Plainsman and was sold to the Plainsman of Lubbock around 1968. The Ropesville Resettlement Project began in 1934 in conjunction with Franklin D. Roosevelt's Federal Emergency Relief Administration. The project eventually encompassed more than 16,000 acres divided into eighty-one farms of 140 to 160 acres to grow cotton, sorghums, and other crops. In 1943 federal funds in support of the project were transferred to the war effort, and participating farmers were allowed to purchase the land they worked. Seventy-six farms resulted, ranging in size from 146 to 300 acres. Ropesville increased from a population of 500 and fifteen businesses in 1930 to a peak of 950 residents and forty-eight businesses in 1965. By the late 1980s it had a population of 500, nine businesses, and a post office. In 1990 the population was 494. The population was 517 in 2000.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: Mary Alma Blankenship, The West Is for Us: The Reminiscences of Mary A. Blankenship, ed. Seymour V.
I am trying to find out what happened to Chester A. and Essie Thornton who were living in Wichita Co. TX in the 1920 and 1930 census.
The 1920 Wichita Co.census shows

Name Age
Chester A Thornton 43
Essie Thornton 32
Ethel Thornton 13
Horace Thornton 11
Marie Thornton 10
Charles K Thornton 7
May Dorlher 5 6/12 (Dorothy)

In searching for what happened to this family, I found in the SS Index - Horace P. Thornton 27 May 1909 5 Jul 1998 Levelland, Hockley, Texas

This is the only Horace in the SS Index who was born at about the right time.

Does anyone have access to the 1998 obits who could do a lookup and see if his obit mentions any of the above census names?

I would greatly appreciate it. I am writing a book about Murders in Northern Texas and Essie was slightly involved in the Santa Claus Robbery that happened in Cisco, Eastland Co. TX in 1927. At the end of each story, I add a mini genealogy for each person involved in each story and I would like to add the genealogy of Essie Thornton but I have to trace her history first! It is possible that Essie remarried after her husband died between 1920 and 1930 and I can't find her date on http://search.labs.familysearch.org

Thanks for ANY help.

I am from Philadelphia but am trying to learn more about my grandfather's roots. I know little but his name is Jesse Casares (possibly originally Cazarez or Cazares), grew up on a ranch in Laredo Texas, I think his family owned a general store - not sure. He left there at 17 and never went back and really didn't keep in touch but i believe there may be family there. We found out a while ago that he his parents (Ascencion and Concepcion) were from "deep in Mexico." I am wondering if this is a common surname in that area of Texas.
