Hopkins Co. 1870 Census residents born in Mexico

Posted: 30 Jun 2013 11:25AM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Jones - Martin - Caldwell - Ledbetter-Cullen/Culler
1870 Hopkins Co. Texas
580/581 Augustus CALDWELL(w) 32 Alabama
Betty(w) 21 Georgia
Lulu (w) 1 Tx
Levi MARTIN(w) 18 Mexico
John VANSICKLE (w) 35 Missouri
Augustus Caldwell m. Elizabeth Ledbetter 5 Mar 1868
*need to know Elizabeth Ledbetters parents

581/582 Clark Cullen (b) 35 Georgia
Mary (b) 26 Ga
James (b) 23 Ga
Nancy (b) 20 Ga
Amanda (b) 3 Tx
Young (b) 1 Tx
I have not traced these to see if there are any connections to the families they are living next to, but will. If anyone has info on them, let me know.

582/583 Charles Ishmael(w) 55 Tenn (my g-g grandfather)
Sarah (MARTIN) (w) 28 Ky
Benjamin (w) 21 Ar
James (w) 17 Ar
Elizabeth (w) 10 Ar
Thomas (w) 6 Tx
William P (w) 4 Tx
Adeline /12 Tx (m g-grandmother)

*I've been unable to identify Sarah Martin with any other Martin families in Hopkins Co. Tx or those born in Ky. She doesn't appear to be living near any relatives. EXCEPT in this census there is LEVI MARTIN, born in Mexico. Therefore I'm exploring the possibility that Levi and Sarah are related.

Levi Martin is on the 1860 census of Rio Arriba, New Mexico Territory
Hermengildo Martin 28 New Mexico
Antonio 17 New Mexico
Levi Martin 8 New Mexico
Juana Sandaval 60 New Mexico

I'm not familiar with understanding naming patterns and relationships of the Spanish that are on the early census and if anyone can tell me what the relationship of the people on the Rio Arriba census could be, please advise.

Also on the 1870 Hopkins Co. Census:
401/399Thomas JONES 37 Mexico
Missouri 28 Tenn
Hardy 10 Tx
Elonzo 4 Tx
William 9/12

Thomas Jones is in Delta Co., Tx 1880. I'd like to trace this family (marriages and death dates) to see if there is any connections to my Sarah Martin, Levi/and or Thomas Jones.

The Mexico born residents must be coming into Texas via the Santa Fe Trail--and my g-g grandmother arriving just after the Civil War and marrying 1863 in Hopkins Co.
