Some wrong information posted by the other, adding additional findings.

The Muster Roll data included more information than provided. Z.W. Ford was age 17(which would be about correct). He enlisted on Sep 3, 1863 at Washington Co. for six months. He mustered on Sept 15, 1863 into Company E, which was stationed at Camp Randle on Sep 15th. The Muster roll (document) was dated on Sep 15th (image online).. Texas State Troops (Militia). As a Militia, he may or may not have fought in the civil war.

The 23rd Brigade was formed in Austin County. Records can be found at:
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/taro/tslac/30174/tsl-30174.html
MASSIVE amount.

I found one family tree posted on William Gordon Ford, identified birth as you have, parents Zachary Daniel Ford 1774-1836, Mary Gordon 1777-1832. The father might have been the name source for Zachra (or Zachra's name was incorrectly enuerated). Mother Mary could have been the name source for Mary.

The 1850 Census was enumerated on the 14th Day of Sep, in Jackson Co.
William G, age 32(1817/1818), born Tenn
Margaret B, age 22(1827/1828), born (overwritten).
Zachra W(?), age 4 (1845/1846)
Mary Ann, age 1 (born 1849, IF she was one year old by Sep. Census are often wrong on age).

The 1860 Census, enumerated the 8th day of June, in Jackson Co.
W.G. Ford, age 42, born Smith Co, TN
M.B. Ford, 32, born Holms Co, Miss
Z.W, 14, born Washinton Co, TX
Mary A. 11, born Jackson Co, TX
W. G. Ford, Jr, age 2
Texana A. Ford, age 15, TX (I did a few searches for this person, without success. She probably wasn't a Ford, but may have been a ward, housekeeper, etc.). This person might have been born in this area, the census identifies the post office as being Texana.

The other poster has problems with computer links...Here is the correct one for the Marriage of a Mary A. Ford to James T. Lott:
http://files.usgwarchives.net/tx/washington/vitals/marriages...
The marriage took place on Jan 18, 1870, in Washington Co, but this record is NOT ENOUGH to verify this is the correct person.

The 1870 Census of Washington Co, enumerated 3 August.
J. T. Lott, age 23, farmer, born in TX
M.A., age 19, keeping house, born in TX
--This persons age would put her born 1850/1851.

The 1900 Census of Navasota, Grimes County, TX
J (transcribed as "I") T. Lott, born May 1850 in TX, Merchant, married 27 years (1872/1873)
Mary, born April 1860(1860 is correct), age 40, born in Texas to father born in Tennessee, mother in Mississippi (birth location of parents matches the correct Mary. So, this proves the marriage found above, although the number of years is incorrect). Mother of 4/4 living. I did not identify the four on the page, or the daughter-in-law (Eula, wife of William Royall Lott), as their info is found below:

The Mary Ford gravesite found by the other is NOT the correct person.
As found:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=fo...;

The CORRECT ONE:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=lo...;

---------------W.G. Ford, Jr.-------

The 1880 Census of Precinct 1, Washington County, TX
W. Ford, age 21, farmer, born in Texas to father born in Tenn, mother in Miss
B. W, age ?(19 as appears and transcribed), farmer, Tx/TN/MS
This page is torn across the names, second initial of W is gone, the age of B.W. is partially torn, but both are male.

The Washington County Marriage Index shows a W.G. Ford, marriage to an O.M. Holland, Jan 31, 1881.
http://files.usgwarchives.net/tx/washington/vitals/marriages...
The 1880 Census for Washington Co, shows an Ollie Holland in Chapel Hill, age 21, born in Georgia, dau of John S, 44, Georgia; and Mary, age 42, Alabama. A family tree identified her as being Olivia M. Holland.

Williams Grave: He was born 1858, died October 6, 1895. Spouse Ella Grey Harrison Ford. He is in the same cemetery as Mary Ann.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=fo...;
Per 1900 Census: Ella was born Sept 1866 in Alabama to fahter born in Miss./mother in S. Carolina, mother of 3/3 living.
Willie, born June 1891 in Tx, Fred, May 1893, Marvin, Mar 1896

When the other person wrote: "If you're interested in pursuing, I'd contact the Washington County Genealogical ..." She does not mean she would, she lives in Washington State.

Hi,

I believe Zachra was a Confederate in the Civil War.

Z. W. Ford, private
Commanding Officer: Thomas L. I didn't find any record for Ford's.

There are microfilm of Jackson Co. including Probate Minutes 1837-1912 and probate Records 1837-1887. You'll find the list of microfilms at www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/local/jackson.html. You can't order a microfilm from the Victoria College/University. You have to go to your local public library and they place a request for an inter-library transfer which is generally no charge unless you live in Oregon.

Mary A. Cemeteries that are indexed online but didn't find any Ford's. The Washington County Gen. Soc., website mentioned there are over 300 cemeteries in that county.
Find no female listed as Texana in Jackson county in 1850 census so she is a mystery.

I find a Mary A Ford that married a James T Lott 19 Jan 1870 in Washington County, Texas. It appears that one of these Lott's married a relative of Margaret B George in 1861. Mary A Ford Lott is listed in Washington Co 1870 census but do not find the other Ford's nor any marriages 1860 - 1870 for her brothers. Nor do I find a civil war record for "Zacharia" W Ford.

Wm Bailey George, that was residing with the Ford's in Jackson Co in 1850, returned to Washington Co by 1860 and married Hattie/Hallie Evans there in 1869 and appears to have remained in Washington County.
I am looking for information about William Gordon Ford and his children. He was born Nov 12, 1817, in Smith Co., TN; married Margaret B. George, Aug 05, 1845, Washington Co., TX. She was born in 1828, Holmes Co., MS.

They moved to Jackson Co., TX by 1850 and are also in the 1860 census. After that, I don't know what became of the family. Their children, based on census records, were Zachra W Ford, b. 1846; Mary Ann Ford, b. 1849; and W. G. Ford, Jr., b. 1858. There is also a Texana A Ford, b. 1845 in the household in 1860.

I am attempting to gain access to Elijah Stapp's grave that is on private property. The property is south and east of FM 822 and CR 124. From looking at satellite pictures, it appears the grave is in an open field. Though the grave is not visible, according to latitude and longitude coordinates ( N 29.040275 / W -96.705318) the grave is in the area.

By chance, maybe there is somebody who lives in the area who might know who the owner is and how I can contact them to get permission enter their property.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Civil War Camp

In late 1863 the threat of invasion in south Texas seemed imminent and Federal troops were stationed on Matagorda Peninsula . On occasion, they would make raids on the mainland for forage and cattle. Cavalry troops were stationed along the coast to watch and report Union movements. One such camp was established in late January 1864 somewhere along the Lavaca River. Likens' 35th Tx Cavalry was here for about 3 months until they were transferred to Louisiana. It's likely another unit moved into the camp to continue its vigil of the bluecoats on Matagorda. I suspect the camp may have been in the same area as Camp Independence. I'm looking for a county historian who may pin point the exact location of the camp and any records that may exist.

Thanks for the info. Since I posted the original message, I found the State Historical Marker website. It shows a marker for Texana has been placed on the southwest end of the lake. As for the CW camp, almost every Texas county has one or more local CW history buffs. Hopefully one of them may have some ideas of it's location. Thanks again.

The town of Texana is now completely underwater (or it was until the recent drought). There is a marker denoting its former location. To get there, go SE 4.5 miles from Edna on SH111, turn left at FM Loop 1822.

There isn't any marker about CSA cavalry being in the area. There is one in Matagorda Co.

There is a sunken ironclad steamship named the "Mary Summers" that was sunk in the Navidad River (about 3 miles from Lolita). About a year ago, a man in a boat struck a portion of the steamship that was sticking up and was killed.

Phyllis Mistrot

Texas calvary units were stationed here in the spring of 1864 to patrol the Gulf Coast north of Lavaca and Matagorda Bays. Their mission was to keep an eye on Union troops stationed on Matagorda Peninsula. On occasion, the Federals would make excursions inland foraging for supplies and beef.

Since you've specified "Volkmer" as a research-surname, guessing that was her's? If so, the she's listed SSDI: 8 Jan 1912 - 3 Apr 2010? You need to include more exact info 'cause Mary Louise Girndt (20 Jul 1870 - 1 Mar 1948) was a resident of this county, also. If the first person is the one you are seeking, then lookup birth records for Carolyn Louise Volkmer/Raymond Joseph Marak.

This information is incorrect. The Wells cemetery is located on FM 1822 just before you cross Dry Creek Heading in the direction of LNRA Headquarters. You have to go through my families land to get there. I was there recently and the graves are in bad shape. The pasture it is located on belongs to a neighbor of my family.

Following fellowship, history sharing and covered dish luncheon hosted by Juanie Jo ASHLEY SMITH CAMPBELL, the ASHLEY cousins & friends will meet at Linney Cemetery, located at E. Linney & N. Colbert St, Dayton, TX.

A Confederate monument honoring J.R. ASHLEY has been placed next to his son, George Washington ASHLEY (1860-1955). Nearby in unmarked graves are J.R.'s wife, Minerva BARFIELD ASHLEY (1840-1921) and G.W.'s wife, Mary Elizabeth BROCK ASHLEY (1854-1934)

Born 1/July/1829 in Robeson Co, NC, he was named James Robeson but in Texas he used "Robert." Briefly before the Civil War he lived in Huntsville near his brother Edmund Powell ASHLEY and uncle, Wm. P. ASHLEY. He was home in NC by 1860, and ready for war in 1862

NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS, 1861-1865, VOL XII INFANTRY, Co. E., 51st Regiment N.C. Troops; NonCommissioned Officers & Privates: "ASHLEY, JAMES ROBESON, Private; Born in Robeson County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Robeson County at age 32, Feb 28, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the head at Drewry's Bluff, VA, on or about May 15, 1864. Hospitalized in Danville, VA, May 18, 1864; Transferred to hospital at Wilmington on an unspecified date. Returned to duty on August 6, 1864." JRA was wounded at least a half dozen times, including "a ball in the soft part of hip" which caused him misery for the rest of his life. The last official reports show him in the hospital 1/Oct/1864 & AWOL 28/Dec/1864. He was at home, healing, waiting for war's end.

In 1871, J.R., Minerva and four children joined about 75 Robesonians moving to Texas, where three more children were born. Henry Bascom, 13, from 1st marriage, stayed with his Aunt Mary THOMPSON and never saw his dad again. Over the next 50 years ASHLEY farmed all over Texas, including Goliad, Washington, Falls, Ellis, McLennan, Coryell, Llano, Calhoun, Matagorda, Jackson, Harris and Liberty Counties. As he aged he was disabled by acute vision problems and a festering war wound in his hip so he usually lived with one of his children.

Daughter Elenor “Nell” (1859 NC – 1847 AR) married US Army soldier Joseph WOODS & lived in Ft Stanton, NM, Calhoun Co, TX, and White Co, AR.
Vanished Taylor family in Jackson County, TX

Searching to find out what happened to the James F. Taylor family found in Jackson County,Texas, 1900 Census, Justice Precinct 5, Enumerator District 60. They were:

Taylor, James F. 54
" , Martha, 43
" , Austin F., 17
" , Buckler W. (could be Burrell or Butler), 14
" , Jacob E., 11
" , Lucy E., 8
" , Joseph L., 77

Joseph L., above, is the father of James F. Also appearing in this household is one William A. Smith, 25, listed as a boarder, but probably a relative of James F.

By the time the 1910 Census rolls around the entire family has disappeared. It could be thought Joseph L. might have died of old age, but what happened to the rest of the family? Is Joseph L. buried in Jackson County?

Any information or even clues deeply appreciated.
