The Angelina County Genealogical Society will meet at 5 P.M. Monday, February 20, 2012 in the Community Meeting Room of Kurth Memorial Library, 706 Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904, 1-936-630-0563.
The meeting program will be presented by Jeff Roth, Assistant Professor of Geography at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. The program title will be AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORICAL IDENTITY IN EAST TEXAS, 1836-1865 as previously presented by Dr. Roth at several other historical and genealogical related meetings and conferences. Dr. Roth specializes in historical geography of the United States. Dr. Roth’s presentation is expected to contain a number of informational “gems” extremely useful for researching any early East Texas family and to explain the importance of using maps of where people lived to further genealogically research.
The program for the Monday, March 19th, society’s meeting will be presented by ACGS member, Mrs. Billie Grunden of Jasper, entitled MY JOURNEY TO THE WAR OF 1812. Mrs. Grunden is expected to describe some basic research techniques useful in finding information about the War of 1812 era. Mrs. Grunden will describe some of her adventures in tracing her families back to ancestors who served in the War of 1812. While Mrs. Grunden’s main emphasis will be on her War of 1812 ancestor who served in the Maryland Militia, two of her other ancestors served in the Mississippi Militia.
The ACGS executive board is expected to meet at 4 PM at Kurth Memorial Library prior to the regular society meeting and program. All executive board meetings are open to the society membership and all society meetings are open to the public.
Society members are especially reminded to come early to see the recently remodeled Ora McMullen Genealogy Room at Kurth Memorial Library. The room was closed from February 8-14 for the installation of additional new shelving for the growing book collection and the addition of more and better lighting in the stacks according to Ora McMullen Genealogy Room Librarian Mrs. Cindy McMullen.
Free individual genealogical research help is available on the 3rd Monday of each month (except January)from 1-4 p.m. in the Ora McMullen Genealogy Room, Kurth Memorial Library, 706 Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904, 1-936-630-0563, provided by members of the Angelina County Genealogical Society. Please call contact Cindy McMullen, genealogy department librarian, for further information. Calling ahead for an appointment is strongly advised to assure individual help from a society volunteer.
The Angelina County Genealogical Society meets at 5 p.m. on the 3rd Monday of the month at Kurth Memorial Library, except January when the library is closed for MLK Day.
Twenty-eight people signed in for the society’s January 16th meeting held in the meeting room at Lufkin Bar-B-Que. ACGS Society Vice-president Vivian Cates of Alto presided at the executive board and regular meeting due to the absence of Society President Dickie Dixon due to the death of his wife, Jana. A double program was presented by two unrelated Griffin surnamed men with connections to separate family shootings and murders with political connections. Society past-president and executive board member Sam Griffin talked about the murder of his wife Mary’s early Texas ancestor who was murdered in Arkansas. Frank Griffin of Splendora, Texas, reviewed his book, TOUCHED BY FIRE, One Man’s Road from Alabama to Dallas, 1954 to 1963, copies of which were available for purchase after the meeting. A copy of Mr. Frank Griffin book written with Peter Heyrman is available at Kurth Memorial Library.
ACGS members were reminded that dues for the club/calendar year are now due and payable at $10.00 for individual and $15.00 for two people at the same address. The new slate of officers for 2012 began functioning at the January ACGS Executive Board Meeting. They are third-term president, Dickie Dixon, Vice-President Vivian Toole Cates, Secretary Betty Dufner, and Treasurer Sharon Elliott.
