If I recall the legend correctly, as it was told in my family many years ago; Dolores Doporto, as a young woman was engaged to marry a man named who tended goats in the hills near Ft. Davis. On a certain night of the week, Dolores would climb this mountain and light a fire that he would be able to see from where he was at. This was her way of communcating to him that she was thinking of him. One night, shortly before they were to be married, the young man was murdered while tending his goats. Dolores never overcame her grief and for forty years she continued to climb the same mountain and build her fire in remembrance of her beloved fiance. When she died she was buried on this mountain that later became known as Dolores Mountain. As legends go, some people say that on this particular night of the week, you can hear her crying on the mountain.
Jesus Doporto of Shafter and later Ft. Stockton was a friend of my grandparents. Any relation to your Doporto family?
Best Regards

We do not know if he met with an accident or some other ill fate. My Great Grandmother moved in with my Grandparents Lima Mae Allen Buerger, and Harry B. Buerger. I would also like to know what happened to John Lovic.

Haven't been able to locate this family of Allens:

John Lovic Allen born Feb. 1878 Lavaca, Co., Texas; wife Anna May Wilson b. Aug. 1880, Texas; daughter Lina M. b. 1899; daughter Stella Maud b. ca 1902; son Jesse b. ca 1908; son Alex L. born ca 1911. They, except Lina, are in Jeff Davis County in 1920 census. "J.L. Allen" is listed as managing a grocery store. Couple is on 1900 census, Wilson Co., Texas in household of Aaron Wilson in 1900 and are in Wilson Co. still in 1910 as Lovic J. Allen household. This implies they married in Wilson Co., Texas around 1898/99. Son Alex L. shows up in household of aunt Myrtle Allen Fauver and husband Geo. F. Fauver (indexed as Fanner) in San Antonio, Bexar Co., in 1930 census. Alex is listed as a 19 year old bellboy. John L. Allen is son of James Monroe Allen and S. C. "Kate" Rhode also in his household in 1920 in Jeff Davis Co. I would like to know of any whereabouts after 1930. Many Thanks.

I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. Southern Pacific Railroad night watchman (called Captain because he was captain of the watchmen in El Paso previously and detective) Richard "Dick" Elsbery (also referred to as J.L. in some accounts also with various spellings of last name) was shot and killed on 16 Aug 1895 in Valentine (Presidio Co at the time and now in Jeff Davis co) by two robbers. The case is well documented in Bob Alexander's book, Lawmen, Outlaws, and S.O.B.s. Volume II, Silver City, NM: 2007. I have a stack of newspaper articles also. Tom & S.L. HOLLAND were arrested but Tom's case was dismissed. S.L. was conviced of the robbery and acquitted of the murder. He was later retried and acquitted of the robbery.

You use John Luckie Elsberry which matches the J.L. references. I found a J.L. Elsberry as a detective for the Morriss Agency in Houston in 1889-1890. I could not find any family information on Elsberry, date of birth or place of burial. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Dear pdsain,

Thank you very much for your very thorough research into the Wither's family. The remains of Robert L. Withers were never recovered after his plane went down in the North Sea and it is fitting that there is a memorial for him in the Hill Crest Cemetery.

Lt. Withers was the lead pilot on the first mission of the 381st bomb Group, a raid on Antwerp, Belgium on 22 June 1943. My father, 2nd Lt. John M. Carah, also a pilot, was assigned to the tail gunner position of Lt. Wither's aircraft to assess the effectiveness of the P-47 fighter cover. Wither's returned to base unscathed after this mission, but several others were shot down or crash-landed.

My father himself was later shot down over France in July, 1943 and spent some 9 months in occupied Europe before he successfully evaded to Spain in early 1944.

Can you suggest a newspaper that might have carried a story on the death of Lt. Wither's in October, 1943? I would like to find a microfilm or similiar record of the reporting of the event and also a photo if one was printed in the newspaper.

Again, thank you for all of your help.

Regards,

Warren B.
Robert L. Withers--USAAF Pilot--WW-II

I am researching the military career of several persons who were my father's bomber squadron mates during WW-II. Robert L. Withers was with the 533rd Bomb Squadron of the 381st Bomb Group based at Ridgewell, Essex, England in the summer of 1943.

Mr. Withers was probably born in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas in December 1919, but he enlisted in the Army Air forces cadet program at Dallas in January 1942, and stated his residence was in Jeff Davis County.

Mr. Withers was a lead B-17 pilot in his squadron and was promoted to Captain in September, 1943. On 9 Octboer, 1943 his plane went missing over the North Sea and vanished without a trace.

I would like to make contact with a relative or other person having knowledge of Captain Withers. In lieu of that, I would like to know if someone can look up the newspaper articles that likely were written shortly after Capt. Withers aircraft was lost in October, 1943.

Thank you,

Warren B.

I REALLY hope someone can help me here! I'm looking for any information on my great grandfather, James Andrew Moore. He lived his whole life in Morganton, GA, but his children (at least some of them) seemed to have moved to Hazlehurst. My grandfather was John Avery Moore, who married Latitia Aleph Latimer, daughter of James H. Latimer. (who's son married Callie Moore, brother of John Avery.) I'd really like to know who the parents of James Andrew Moore were, and where we're from. He was born 17 OCT 1840, married Sarah Matildia (Legg) Huckabee 30 JUL 1865, and died 06 NOV 1913. John Avery Moore was born 14 JUN 1871. Thanks for the help!!

I have posted my Dutchover family tree at Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project. There are about 1500 direct descendants of Diedrick and Cora Dutchover, and about that many more members of families related to the Dutchovers by marriage. With that many people, there are almost certainly some errors that you can help me correct. Please take a look, and contact me if they have additional info or corrections. The family tree is at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~dutchover

Diane,
It had been a while since I had looked at the book, "One Hundred Years of Faith and Memories" by Viola Short. It is basically a book about the Catholic Church down in Shafter (Presidio Co.) and the people of the area, mostly hispanics. There is nothing in it that would help you as far as I know. By the way, the book retails for 16.95.
If you know that any of the people you are looking for were connected with the fort in any way the historian, Mary Williams, will tell you if they have any information there. She does not keep records on civilians of the area unless they had a connection to the fort as a civilian employee. If you know that there is a connection, you can write to her and ask her if she has any info on file, but she will not do research for you. Again, this is only if they have a connection with the fort. I wish I had her e-mail address but I don't. Her mailing address would be P. O. Box 1379, Fort Davis, Texas 79734. Include your e-mail address as she will probably prefer to answer you that way.
I hope this is of some help to you. Good Luck!
Pat

Diane,
I am going to be gone for church and then we have a lunch date with friends but I hope to be able to sit down and check for your list of names in the book by the end of the day.
By the way, I happen to be the bookstore manager for the bookstore at Fort Davis Nat'l Historic Site.
I agree with you about the Pioneer Cemetery. I have asked if the boy scout troop could maybe keep it up but that hasn't happened. Also, I know that the Historical Society "talks" about it but it is made up of mostly older citizens. Hopefully, some day it will be kept maintained before it gets much worse. I will have to bring it up again.
Pat

Hi again Pat,

Yes, I have visited the cemeteries and courthouse, as well as the book shop in the visitor center at the Fort. And of course, I have looked over all the books available in the Limpia gift shop. My personal library has grown considerably with all the history this area provides. <grin>

I will be eager to hear from you if the "One Hundred Years of Faith and Memories" book has any of my names. And the cost of the book, if it does....

Daniel Murphy (in HIllcrest Cemetery) was the second husband of my husband's 2nd great grandmother. There is a long and convoluted story here where he married two sisters. His first wife, Sarah Hinfey died in San Antonio about the same time Susan Hinfey Brady's (her sister) husband died. Sarah and Daniel had one son and 5 daughters. Susan and her husband had two sons and 3 daughters. When Daniel wanted to go to Fort Davis, Susan told him he couldn't take his daughters (her nieces) out West with all those soldiers without a "proper chaparone", so they married and combined the families and settled in Fort Davis. The other names I mentioned were those of husbands of the daughters, and most of them moved on prior to their deaths and would not be in the cemeteries. But I appreciate your providing the names of those who are there.

I have taken photos in the old Pioneer cemetery. What a shame the community doesn't keep it cleaner. I know getting those dry weeds out would not be an easy task, but this is no way to honor the men and women who settled this area. You probably feel the same way.

Have a good day,
Diane

Diane,
I will scan the book for the names you sent. Since you mentioned that you have been to Fort Davis, have you checked the cemeteries for the families you are looking for? I have transcribed Hillcrest Cemetery here in Fort Davis. I checked it for the names you sent. The only ones with matches are:

Ward: Victor Moreau, Cora P., Marion Ernest, George
(These are not all in the same area of cemetery.)

Davis: Alice Grubb, Emmitt E., Floyd Emmet, George Watson, Nellie C., Thomas H., Alvin H., Augusta, James B.
These are not all in the same area of cemetery.)

Murphy: Daniel

The other two cemeteries in the area are the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, which is not actually owned by the church; it was started by the Men's Mexican Association and is mostly, but not all, hispanic burials; and the Pioneer Cemetery, that is very old and not very big.
If any of the above names connect with your line and you want the dates, etc. let me know and I will be glad to send those to you. In case you want it, my e-mail address is:
porptty@sbcglobal.net

Pat
Pat, thank you for writing about the Viola Short book. I don't remember seeing it in the gift shop while in Fort Davis last October -- perhaps they were out. I would still like to know if the book includes information on the following families -- and the price -- before I try to order it.

Abbott
Brady
Caraway
Davis
Hopkins
Hunt
McDonald
Murphy
Scannell
Shields
Van Valza
Ward
Young

Best Regards, Diane

Searching for any info. Tillmon Jones and Margaret Louise Sanders. Tillmon had several children before he married Margaret. Their children Perry, Vianna, and Viola were born in Valentine abt 1880-1890's. Like many of Weed NM residents this family and some of Margarets siblings moved to Valentine. Margaret later raised another family with Alex Wilkerson. Any of these names sound familiar. Thanks

Hello Uncle/Cousin or other,

I'm Dena, Lorena's daughter. I am the eldest of three siblings --Rupert Gutierrez and Jerry Gutierrez are my brothers. I am Juan Lara's eldest granddaughter.

I don't know if this info will help you out of not, but my great great grandmother Belen's father true name was Anton Von Diedric(k). He was originally from Anthrwerp Belgian. He eventually settled in Fort Davis Texas and made history by "holding down the proverbial fortt" until the U.S. sent in more men to help with the stronghold at Ft. Davis during the Tex/Mex war. Anyways, I've called the librarian at Ft. Davis and looked him up and he referred to in history books that pertain to Ft. Davis's settlement.

Also, just so you know, when my great great grandfather was killed by lightening either gathering or hauling salt, great great grandmother Belen remarried again (even though she had five children or so at the time) and had more children with her new husband. His last name was Trujillo (this information was given to me by my great great grandmother Maria, who is probably your mother or grandmother). The reason it was quite easy for her to find a new suiter is because the Dutchover family was, is and has always been highly esteemed in Texas. There are even some in New York. Not surprising since great great great grandpa Anton had to come through some eastern port of entry and at the first opportunity joined the military mainly for citizenship. Her Mother's name was Refugia "Cora" Salcido.

Please feel free to contact me there is more information than I can believe on the internet. A distant relative (Jim Granger) 2nd general Dutchover has many postings and replies.
