I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram for 26 June 1891 reports that a fight erupted at a fandango at Encinal on 25 June 1891. Constable George REED could not quell the disturbance and sought assistance from Deputy JOHNS, James COPE and Robert CARR as a posse. COPE was killed by gunfire and CARR wounded. Bias REYAS of the crowd was killed and RIEBAND, a white carpenter, was mortally wounded. The black men engaged in the firing were arrested and taken to Cotulla. The dead men were buried.
I am searching for more information about this incident and the place of burial of COPE.
