Sometimes we have found that some things relatives have thought was true wasn't but we all agree on this one. You can check out my book if you want.
EDGAR Family Cemetery in DeWitt County

EDGAR Family Cemetery
Decoration Day 2013

A Decoration Day at the old EDGAR Family Cemetery is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th. The cemetery is remote, on private land, near the location of the old Edgar family homestead in the Edgar community, between Cuero and Yoakum. The Edgar family’s first-born son, Joseph Smith Edgar, was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21,1836 (almost 177 years ago).

The cemetery dates to 1863 when the first burial is believed to have occurred there. The James Edgar family had moved to DeWitt County, TX from Maury County, TN in late 1853 to settle on a third of a league of land (1,476.1 acres) which was a first class headright grant, awarded to their first-born child, Joseph Smith Edgar, for his presence in Texas prior to the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on 02 Mar 1836. Ten children are known to have been born to James Edgar and his wife, Selah Witherington, between 1818 and 1835. There were nine boys and one girl, and they all came to Texas.

The 17-year-old Joseph came first, in late 1835. He joined the Texas Army, and he was a member of Capt. Robert Calder's Infantry Company K, 1st Regiment, Texas Volunteers at the Battle of San Jacinto. In addition to the headright grant described above, Joseph was also awarded a donation grant of 640 acres for his service at the Battle of San Jacinto and a bounty grant of 320 acres for his service in the Texas Army in general.

Unfortunately, Joseph died before he ever saw any of the land he had earned. He died 09 Jul 1837 at the home of Capt. James Gibson Swisher on the Swisher Farm near the Old Gay Hill community in Washington County. Capt. Swisher was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and he was from the same area in middle Tennessee as was the Edgar family.

In addition to Edgar family members, numerous other burials occurred in the old EDGAR Family Cemetery of relatives by marriage and of friends and neighbors. Some of the surnames of those known to have been buried in the cemetery include: Abel, Batchelor, Bates, Bell, Bennett, Bouldin, Brown, Carr, Dikes, Donnell, Duke, Dykes, Edgar, Farquhar, Hadley, Hugo (or von Hugo), Jacobs, Ladd, Lee, Luce, Mahler, McAdoo, McCormick, McMeen, Means, Mikes, Mikesh, Murphey, Newsome, Nyegaard, Odom, Pincham, Powers, Pridgen, Rackley, Reader, Robinson, Skeen, Sparkman, Strown, Taylor, Welch, Witherington and Young.

There will be two 3-hr work sessions at the cemetery, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and a visitation period in early afternoon for those unable to attend either work session. A lunch at a local restaurant will include an organizational meeting aimed at forming an EDGAR Family Cemetery Association (“EFCA”) with the objectives of restoring, regularly tending, and preserving the cemetery.

Anyone interested in attending a work session, the visitation at the cemetery and/or the luncheon should contact the EDGAR Family Cemetery Association via email at EFCA1853@gmail.com. More information about the cemetery, the EFCA, and Decoration Day 2013 can be found at the cemetery’s website at http://parkerhannah.com/EdgarFamilyCemetery/Welcome.html.
Loved that tidbit on Sarah Belle being surpised by W M McMurrey's 6 children after William and Sarah's marriage in 1847.
My G-grandfather was John Taylor the child born that led to the death of his mother Mary Elizabeth McMurrey (Taylor) in 1846, W M's first wife. So John Taylor was just a toddler when Sarah Belle married and knew no other mother.
I have often wondered if there was any step-family concerns.
My G-grandfather in 1860 Census at age of 16 shows in the shousehold of his uncle R L McMurrey and not of the household of W.M. and Sarah. Of course, my G-grandfather may have been just apprenticing to his uncle R.L. McMurrey as a blacksmith. My G-Grandfather later worked as a blacksmith after raising his family until the turn of the century.

You have made our day! Your message brought great excitement our way.

My siblings and I can't begin to express our thanks for the information you shared. We started looking into building our family tree about 6 months ago but ran into so many stumbling blocks we were about to give up. I am so glad I ran across the message boards for Fayette and Lavaca counties. Had it not been for that we would not have this information.

We live near Houston and will be spending some time around LaGrange soon. Plans now include a visit to the Czech Heritage Center during that time. Also, I am going to contact the local Family Search Center to inquired if they may have the books you mentioned.

We are amateurs at this and have been blessed to run across someone willing to help us.

Thanks again. The manuscript is at the library of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas.

The Chylek family arrived at the port of New York on April 10, 1883 on the ship Main. They were as follows:

Jan Chylek, born Jan. 14, 1850 in Kozlovice #56 to Bartolomej Chylek and Johana Lanca; no further information on him.

His wife Anezka, born on Nov. 8, 1855 in Ticha #38 to Ignac Fojtik and Anezka Havel; no further information on her.

Their son, Frantisek Chylek, born May 31, 1879 in Kozlovice #56; died in 1966 and buried in Wichita, Kansas.

Their daughter, Marie Chylek, born April 8, 1881 in Kozlovice #56; married a Kahanek man, died April 11, 1964 and buried in Hill County, Texas.

Further information about Anezka can be found in MUDr. Simicek's book, The Pilgrims For Hope, Vol. I, which is also available at the TCHCC in La Grange and at several other libraries in Texas:

Anezka's siblings were:

Antonie, born Jun. 13, 1851; married Jan Peterek
Jan, born May 4, 1853; married Veronika Tomas
Johana, born Dec. 19, 1859; died Jul. 18, 1884
Veronika, born Feb. 10, 1862; married Josef Jurica
Mariana, born Jun. 11, 1864
Rozalie, born Nov. 14, 1866

There is more information about the Fojtik family in this book. If you are not near a library that has this book, let me know and I can scan and send a few pages to you if you will give me an email address.

Nancy Schmidt

We have been unable to locate the list. We have found information from a Texas Czech Genealogy website giving us the names, ages and area they were from but we have been unable to obtain the original list to show the ship by which they arrived or their destination in the USA. The arrival date in NY was 3/20/1883. They left Kozlovice.

Thank you so much for your interest and suggestions.

We wish we could share. Grandmother died in 1957 and my aunt, who may have had information as to grandmother's relatives died in 2001. There was a family Bible but it was lost several years ago. We are trying to find out names, dates, too. We are not able to find death certificates for Jan and unable to locate birth certificate for our grandmother. All we know is that she was born on 6/10/1884, most probably in Lavaca or Fayette County.

Thanks for your interest. Wish we had more information.

Yes, this is our grandmother and her sister, Mary, was married to Louis Kahanak. We are unable to locate any information on the mother and father who came over from Czechoslovakia. It is our understanding that Jan Chylek, grandma's father, died shortly after coming to the states and her mother remarried someone in either Lavaca or Fayette county. We have had no success in locating them.

Thanks for your kind assistance. It is so much appreciated.

Believe her parents to be Anezka and Jan Chylek who arrived in the US on 3/20/1883 through NY and settling in either Lavaca or Fayette County. We think Anezka may have been the sister of Rozalie Fojtik-Konvicka Chovanetz as Florence's sister, Mary, lived with the Chovanetz's.
If you are seeking a document with her name and James Allison York together, good luck! Perhaps your best hope lies in his probate, if there was one? There is a "lot" of inference 'cause the two youngest kids in 1860 were enumerated as "Buddie" and "Babe". I'm suggesting the nine-year old Martha would morph into Ida May. James A. York and Ellison York were the same person, circumstantially. Both names listed as slave owners 1850 and 1860 Lavaca County. You may need to spend hours in Lavaca County Courthouse?

Appreciate your reply. Sorry I did not provide enough info. for you. But, I do not see how the 1850 (Jas A."Yock") & 1860 ("Ellison" York) Lavaca Co. Census Records prove that Ida May York (born 1851 in Sweet Home, Lavaca Co. Tx/died 27 Jan 1928 in Goliad Co. Tx)is a child of James Allison/Eliza Green. I do know that the death certificate of Ida May is incorrect--She was Mrs J.P. Reed, not J.C. Reed. The first census on which I find Ida May York is the 1870 Lavaca Co. Census where she is listed with siblings: Malissie (1848-?), Callie (1850-1895), William (1857-?), and James Allison (1860-1934). If you can help me prove this relationship, I will be most grateful. Thanks

Difficult searches are made easier when you share "critical" info and refer to places in terms of counties vs towns/cities. The answer found on your tree. Her parents were James Allison York/Eliza Green. "Critical" info: Mrs. J. C. Reed actually Mrs. J. P. Reed died 27 Jan 1928. Father identified as "Ellison" York probably soundex for "Allison"? Family found 1860 Lavaca-Lavaca-Image 36 and 1850 Lavaca-Not Stated-Image 22. In 1850 search for Jas A. "Yock".

Hill Family (African American) of Lavaca Co.

I am researching my African American family who lived in Lavaca County. Queen Hill Gafford (whose maiden or possibly slave family name may have been Hastings) was born in Miss. about 1852. She appears in Lavaca census records in 1870. She had seven children (Jefferson, Prince Albert, Robert, Lilly, Ira, Lula and Craddie) all born in Lavaca from about 1868-1880. The children's surnames are Hill but I don't know their father's name. A TX marriage index showed that Queen married a man named Isaih Gafford in 1877 but he must have died before the 1900 census. Queen kept the surname Gafford thereafter.

I'm looking for information on Queen’s life before she arrived in TX, who her children’s father is and where/when she eventually died. Possible connections to the children’s father might be Anthony and Martha Hill or Richard and Rosa Hill of Lavaca circa 1870. I’d also like to find vital records or information on Jefferson, Lula and Craddie as I have found some information already about the spouses and children of Queen’s other kids.

Is anyone else researching this family line? Does anyone have suggestions on where to look to find more information about this family? I’m new to genealogy research so outside of censuses and vital records/indexes, I’m not exactly sure where to look.
Lippe Detmold, Germany Geographical DNA Project

The scope and purpose of this Geographical DNA Project is to offer help to those reseachers who can either trace their ancestral roots to, or currently live in what was the former Principality of Lippe. Although there is a German DNA Project, the Lippe Detmold Project is designed to offer a more confined geographical area of research. Currently Lippe consist of roughly 481 square miles, this is walking distance. I originally started a DNA SURNAME PROJECT, which I still administer. Due to the German practice of changing surnames with the transfer of real-estate, either by purchase or inheritance through a female spouse, this project made sense to me. Historically Lippe has existed as a country since 1123 and was once an independent state within the Holy Roman Empire, later, it was incorporated into Prussia. Lippe was elevated to the satus of Principality from 1789 to 1949, it is now part of the state North Rhein-Westphalia. In the 19th Century 20,000 people from Lippe emigrated to the the Americas, mostly to the United States and Canada. Those of you, who want to join, please contact; Al Tieman at altieman@gmail.com

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/LippeDetmoldDE/

Samuel Marion Brown and his wife are buried in Browns Cemetery in Bell County, TX:

The Texas Historical Commission designated the Brown Cemetery which served the community of Okay as a Texas History Cemetery. The original Brown Cemetery was located in the community of Okay in west Bell County on the old Belton-Lampasas Road. It was located on the farm of Samuel Marion Brown and Mary Elizabeth (Evans) Brown who deeded one acre to the Okay community for a cemetery in 1953. Fort Hood displaced the community in 1942, but the cemetery survived intact untill the runway at Gray Air Base was extended. The land was condemned and The Cemetery was moved to its present location at the corner of Reece Creek Road and Ivy Mountian Road. Seventy-three people are buried in the Brown (Okay Community) Cemetery. Members of the Brown (Okay Community) Cemetery Association are trying to learn more about the people interred there and their lives. If you are related to people buried there or if you have information about them contact Oliver Bell in Killeen, Texas.

Rube, Mattie, Ella & Jesse are buried in Killeen City Cemetery. Marion is buried in Shep Cemetery. The only child I can't locate is Henry.

Believe there is something wrong with 1870 Coryell County Census? Familysearch records nine marriages of surname-Bell prior to 1880. Highly unlikely they all came to Coryell after 1870? Anyway, A. B. Bell wed Ella Carpenter 21 Sep 1877 in Coryell. Emma Vada English (13 Jun 1901 - 16 Sep 1982) died in Travis County per Texas Death Records. SSDI indicates last benefits paid to Plainview, Hale County. Council Marvin Bell (28 Mar 1886 - 20 May 1959) died in Tulare, CA. His wife (2) Sallie (18 Sep 1887 - 14 May 1968) perished in the same locale. Her maiden appears to have been Wolf, daughter of Henry Wolf. Annis K. Bell (30 Jul 1883 - 21 Sep 1961) and wife Louise (28 Sep 1889 - May 1973) died in Fresno, CA. Their daughter Edith Etta (nee: Bell) Hollands-Gibbs (22 Mar 1906 - 9 Oct 1991) died in San Luis Obispo, CA. Her death record indicates mother's maiden was Dickenson or variation thereof. I'm not related, simply unable to sleep and in need of somethiing to do!
