Designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in Texas Birth Index

Many people have been confused by the designation "Number exists***, **Death F" in the Father's Name Field in the Texas Birth Index.

I emailed the Texas Department of State Health Services and according to them:

This designation is actually **DEATH FILE NUMBER EXISTS***, and it means that the baby was deceased. At the time that the birth certificate was data entered, the only way to make the notation in the electronic record that the baby was deceased was to enter this in the father’s name fields. The actual birth certificate will show the name of the father if that information was available, and the birth certificate will be stamped "DECEASED."

This format is outdated, however, and no longer used.

Note: Several people have pointed out to me that Texas has made mistakes with this designation, so use good judgment and further research when you see this designation in the Index.

This is a very old query but maybe you will see it. You said in your message you were looking for a Mangrum connection. The only Mangrum connection I am familiar with are my grandparents. Mary Francis White (daughter of Richard White, son of Joseph Arnold White, son of Sanders White) married my Willie Ray Mangrum of Dallas. They have been married 62 years but before them I do not believe their is a Mangrum connection to the Whites.

I don't know if you will see this as you posted about this in 1999. My name is Rebecca I also found the same Frank that you spoke of who married Susan or Susie, they had three children Lula, Hettie and Floyd. Floyd married Maggie Cooper and they became the parents to my father Sampson who later changed his last name to Chatman as he said the Chatham was the slave masters name. Please contact me if you receive this message. Thanks and hope that this can help!!!!

My wife's great grandfather was Jefferson Norris, who came to England from Galveston Texas withe the boxer Jack Johnson round about 1911/1912 (I think). He married an English woman and remained in this country, possibly working as a coal miner. His family believe he left a wife and children behind in Texas. We live in Manchester in North West England

You may already have it, but the Leon County Genealogical Society has a book title A History Of Leon County where it has stories of the early pioneers of the area. You can get a lot of information from that, if you paid proper attention to plagiarism and copyright laws...

Hello,

I am currently several chapters into writing a book about the 22nd Texas Infantry (aka Hubbard’s Regiment).

Since Leon County provided many of its soldiers, it is important to accurately document the families and the towns they called home.

I am looking for extra stories about the personal lives of soldiers, photos, etc …. If there is specific info you would like included, please let me know.

Any suggestions regarding contacts or information for research would be greatly appreciated. I intend on including A LOT of information about all its soldiers

Finally, if you are a direct descendant of a soldier in Hubbard’s Regiment, I will include your photo and info.

Of course, all submissions will be credited in the text of the book.

You may reach me at tpwardlaw@aol.com for additional information, text contributions, and photo contributions.

The book should be ready by the end of this year.

Thank you,
Trevor P.
I'm not too sure how Samuel Irwin/Erwin ties in with my ERWIN family. I researched the James Erwin line for acceptance into the D.R.T. This was the result of my search for Texas records in the 1840's.

1840: Service as a Texas Ranger with Capt. T. N. B.
You will find the name Standmire in many different ways, and many times the census taker just wrote down what they thought they heard. Many people back then could not read or write, including census takers very well.
I did not find Rufus Standmore. You might send for Tom,s SS application. He would have had to give the info himself, so he should have known his parents names. I noticed he was 104 when he died. Maybe the person who filled out the death cert. just thought that was the parents names. It happens all the time.
I found the name as Standmore, Stanmore, Stanmire, and Standmoore.
Let's begin a conversation and perhaps others will recognize "clues" and respond? H. H. Johnson, where do you find him and what did the initials mean? Who was Lee James Johnson's first wife and where can he be found prior to 1910? Lee's birth possibly 12 Mar 1881 per WWI Draft Card in Limestone County. Sarah Jane Markham born about 1845 in Mississippi to Carroll Markham and Nancy J. Smith (prior marriage surname). The Markhams found Limestone County 1870, minus Sallie, but no Walter Johnson.

I am in search of information about Walter Johnson and Sarah Jane (Sallie) Markham in Madison County in approximately 1850-1900. They had two sons, Lee James Johnson (b.1876?) and H.H. Johnson(b.1870). Lee James Johnson married Mary Etta Datray Johnson (b.1876). Lee and Mary Etta Datray Johnson had three children, William Walter Johnson (b.1909), Lona Marie Johnson (b. 1907), and Linne (Lynn) Johnson (1911). These children also went by the last name of Datray for a period of time due to custody issues. William Walter Johnson (1909-1970) married Odie Lorene Watterson Johnson (1907-1987) and had two children, Morris Johnson (1932-1991) and William Carroll Johnson (1936-2000). William Carroll Johnson is my father. I am really searching for information on Walter (1850?)Johnson and Sarah Jane Markham Johnson (1850?). If anyone can help me out and point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate your help! Thank you in advance for your time!!

I would also like some Haskins information. In the Brushy Book link in the other reply it refers to Dr. Taylor. That is my GG Grandfather.

There is a Homer Haskins buried in the Taylor Cemetery in Leon county, not far from Brushy Cemetery and I have unable to make a connection as to why 1 year old Homer was buried there. He is buried just a few plots down from Dr. Taylor.

Anything you can add would be appreciated.

Mark
Your analysis of Jefferson Norris "almost" qualified you to run with the "big dogs"!(lol) You should have researched in more detail. Rev. Jefferson "Norriss" (13 May 1874 - 13 Mar 1971) died in San Antonio. His father identified as Holbert Norris and mother was unknown to informant, Bertha Washington. Next step is to find others listing Holbert Norris as father. Logon https://familysearch.org/ Click highlighted "Death" then enter Texas in the "Death Place" box. Click highlighted "Parent" then enter Holbert Norris as the father. Click "Search" and that should retrieve Steward Norris (Mar 1869 - 24 Jan 1938) and Norris Simpson (1879 - 21 Apr 1934). Unsure about the latter? Now, we've got the names of three siblings (Steward, Jacob, and Jefferson). OBTW! Note the informant on Steward's certificate. Easy enough, 1870 Leon-Precinct 2-Image 45 and find Jacob with his namesake grandfather. Also note Jacob's birth. 1880 is a bit more difficult so I'll help! For whatever reason(s) his parents and siblings enumerated as surname "Bruno". They were still in Leon-Not Stated-087-Images 40 & 41. Regarding Jacob's marriage, look closely at his wife's name in 1900. That's "Arena" misinterpreted as "Anna". J. A. Norris wed Arrena Carrington, 16 Jan 1892, in Leon. Not certain "Carrington" was her maiden name? I'm not related!

im a descendant of jacob norris born march 1872. he lived in leon county (im pretty sure in the unincorporated town of flynn, tx) in 1892 he married an anna norris b. 1876 and then a second wife of irene b. 1875 (possibly irene collins or irene carrington. his children are as follows per the census:

ester (queen esther) b. 1897
sopha b. 1898
patti b. 1901
earnest b. 1903
low i b. 1908
louise b.1910 (my great grandmother)
lueazer b. 1911
boyd (doc) b. 1914

i am searching for information on jacob or either one of his two wives.

on one of the census he is listed as having a mother in law by the name of eliza collins but i think its irene however im not sure which wife she would have been the mother of.

looking on the census it also shows a jefferson norris in roughly the same vicinity and im thinking the two are related. in the census jefferson is married to a woman alice. their children are as follows:

johie b.1898
joseph b. 1900
viola b. 1901
mattie b. 1902
jeff b. 1905
lon b b. 1907
lienbertha b. 1908
lula b b. 1912

please help with whatever information you are able to provide.

thank you in advance!!!
