Tammy, if no response from Nancy Shire in a few days continue reseach! Nancy has been inactive for more than four months per her online profile? You can also "wade" through all of the responses on this thread for information. There are some errors so be cautious! Jesse Daniel Casper's first wife was Lorene Annie Timms. She remarried and died in Los Angeles, CA under surname Norman. Recommend you view "Larry Case Family Tree" http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/2443347/person/-1838671174 It is owned by member lcase5152. Another recommendation is the "Thornton-May Family" owned by CJThornton1972.
There was no obit for Hazel Wheat. The Llano News is published weekly (on Thursday in 1991); I checked every issue from January 3 to February 28, 1991.
It is the policy of the Llano News to print obituaries for free if the deceased was a prominent citizen or had strong family ties in the County. Otherwise, someone would have had to have paid for an obit, which apparently was not the case.
Best wishes,
Jerry Hogan Crabtree

Nell also had two step-brothers, John and George Lane. George was blind but could play a mean piano. He co-founded Austin State School For The Blind. He passed away in the early 1970's in Austin. John married my aunt Lu and moved to Chicago then to Denver. They took Gary Lee to raise in the early 1960's. My family and I moved from Denver to Kentucky in 1979 and that was the last that I saw Gary Lee. I'd like to know where he is now as we grew up together. Anyway, Uncle John and Aunt Lu moved from Strasburg, Colo around 1980 back to Texas. John's sister, Yvonne and her husband L.V. Statten, gave them 10 acres of their farm land outside of Liberty Hill to build on and live. I moved there in '81 to help them build the house. I moved back to KY afterward. John passed away in 1985 and is buried at Liberty Hill Cemetery. We moved Aunt Lu here to KY.
Sonny and Billy both passed years ago and my Mom thinks that Lois passed a few years ago. Yvonne and L.V. are alive as far as I know and are living on the farm in the house that we built.
If you hear anything on either Nell or Gary Lee, please let me know.

Yes, Honey Creek Cemetery is in Llano Co.
I doubt Mark & Georgia divorced. They are in 1880 Llano Co census. He died in 1881 Llano Co, leaving her a widow. She remarries to August Mostiet in 1883 in Llano Co.

As for the marriage: M.A. Harvey married (shown in records as) G.A.Martin,	25 May 1871, Hays Co, TX. He can be found in the 1870 Hays Co census, so they apparently met & thus married there.

In cemetery records Mark is shown as M.A. Harvey. He is in Honey Creek Cemetery per cemetery records, and is also listed on Find A Grave. His dates are shown as 1833 to Feb. 23, 1881.

Marriage records show Mrs. Georgia Ann Harvey married August Mostiet on 5-15-1883 Llano Co.

There is another marriage in Llano Co for a Mattie Harvey to George W. Buttery on 10-15-1883, and a marriage for an R.R. Harvey to a Edna Morris on 3-8-1887. Other than that I don't believe (at quick glance) that I have any other Harvey names in my books that is readily available. I do not know if those last two names are related to the Harvey's you seek or not but they were here at approx same time as Mark & Georgia.

Looking for information regarding Mark A. Harvey, born about 1843 in Georgia. He is on the 1880 census for Llano county with wife Georgia Ann, and a son, possibly Edd, Eli or something similar (the name is not legible) and a female boarder Ashley ? (again the last name is not legible). Mark states he is a farmer. Georgia Ann married August Mosteit in 1833, leaving Mark and son behind. She later divorced Mosteit in 1901 and took back the Harvey name. I am interested in learning more about both Mark and Georgia and especially their son. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Online death certificate Clarence William Hinyard (8 Sep 1903 - 24 Aug 1975) witnessed by Mrs. Anne Uhr. Believe she was his daughter Beverly Anne born to Cordelia "Cordie" Anne Burleson (2 Apr 1907 - Jul 1976)? Mary Nada Hinyard wed Charles Hammond Liitle (4 Apr 1913 - 11 Jan 2002) and there are two birth records. Billie Hinyard (27 May 1917 - May 1982) received last social security benefits in San Saba. No birth/marriage record found. Wallace Hinyard wed Mary Sue McKenzie and there are three births listed. Found death date 11 May 1977 but unable to confirm if that's him! I'm not related!

What an interesting read! I was looking to confirm the parents of Lucinda Gage who married George Washington Gage 1866 in Bastrop County, TX.

Some of the Gages came to TX (still Mexico) in 1820's and are noted in the formation of the Republic.

I have Lucinda (and her sister Ruth) as daughters of Jesse J Gage. Daughters of Republic of Texas list Jesse as son of Reuben Gage b. 1770 NY D. 1844 TX who married Abigail Burleson b. 1774 NC d. 1865 TX.

George Washington Gage (married Lucinda) son of Moses Gage, brother of Jesse J Gage. So Lucinda and George were 1st cousins.

Would love to share info with others researching the Gage families.

Crystal

My Aunt and Uncle lived in Llano, TX about 1978 . At least that is what I am told. Uncle George died in March of 1978 in Llano, TX. I am wondering if there might have been an obit or mention of his death in a Llano newspaper? Or deed of property there? I would love to know his parents names.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
bpadgitt@att.net
Thank you,
Barbara Padgitt

Re: Julius Crider killed by Burt Thurmond/ TRANSCRIPT HERE

The State painted a picture of Burt Thurmond as a killer with intent afore thought

The Defense attempted to paint a picture of Julius Crider as a large boisterious bully who was likely to act upon any threat he made. Burt Thurmond as a small, cripple a bad left leg.

Note: Testimony brought out the fact that Burt had gone to a bar in San Antonio, TX with the intent of shooting a man and the man had taken the gun from him and shot him in the leg

Note: Burt Thurmond was living in a GAGE house that was very close to the Criders and Caspers/

MRS. E. V. CASPER TESTIMONY: (KATIE (GRAHAM) CAKNUPP CASPER) still married to E. VIRGIL CASPER, Llano lawman at time. (When did she and E. VIRGIL CASPER divorce????)

On the Sat night prior to Julius being shot on Sun morn. Julius, Ola Mae and Katie had gone to the movies and Virgil was on duty. After the movie they returned home. Their houses were right next to each other. There was some kind of an altercation in the neighbor hood. A dog was heard barking as if it had been hit or something. Katie knew Virgil went out to see what was going on . (Nothing more abt dog)

She testified that she knew both men well. When asked how long she had known Burt Thurmond, she said, “ I don’t know how long I have known him but him and my daughter was married----she’s been dead now 10 years, about, and they were married just a little while before that."

She heard Burt say, “You better move this car out of the back yard you damn son of a bitch or I will kill you.”

And she heard Julius say, “Burt, don’t call me a son of a bitch.” and then she went to Moss’s to call Virgil.~~~~~~~~~

JACOB J. GAGE TESTIMONY:

Burt Thurmond was a first cousin to the GAGEs and Jacob was adm of his mother’s estate and asked hie siblings if it was alright for Burt to stay in the vacant house, (which was very close to the CRIDER and CASPER residences) There was no objection

Gage also said he had heard Crider make the remark that “he would like to wring Burt’s neck” in reguards to the death of Thurmond’s wife. When she died Thurmond had moved to Aberdeen, New Mexico and he said he did not have time to because he didn’t get the message in time to get to Brady for the funeral. Crider didn’t say that was why he wanted to wring Thurmond’s neck because he did not go to the funeral but it had something to do with that.~~~~~~

SO much for answering questions!! WHY DID this BLACKWELL family claim THURMOND's wife IF she was KATIE GRAHAM CAKNUPP CASPER's daughter??? COULD Ms BLACKWELL have been the sister of KATIE? Some census said KATIE & WILLIAM CAKNUPP had 3 living children but only 2 in household. Well, I guess we know why she is not buried under THURMOND surname.

And just today got this message about JULIUS CRIDER:

"After seeing Winnies post on Mr. Julius Crider it reminded me of story they would tell about him. He was a well known fisherman and teller of tall tales in Llano.( what fisherman isn't? ) he said there was a catfish in the Llano river that was so big that when it turned sideways his tail would brush the bank of the southside and his whiskers the north. Determined to catch that big one he put a large hook on a rope baited it out really good and the fish took the bait. Seeing he could never pull it in he tied the rope to his Hudson cars bumper. Said the last time he saw that car it was heading west up the Llano river. Never saw the fish or car again."

Gives us an interesting insight to the man's personality!

Remember in 1940 census Llano, Burt's first cousin,Jake J. Gage and wife, Maude lived next door to Julius Crider and Ola Mae (Caknupp) Crider.....???
HL2604, it is quite possible these are the children. Another poster to this board, and local resident of Llano Co replied to me directly. She remembers babysitting these children and the dates are about right.

As to which Strother Jones (the elder one ca.1886 or possibly a younger version) was the father I don't know yet. The birth records as per Ancestry.com show he was W. Strother Jones, Jr. and the person who replied to me stated recalling they were a fairly young couple. So its looking like it was this younger man....maybe.

I however have to reply to your comment about the one born ca.1886 being too old to sire children born 1947 & 1949 .... he would have been only about 61 to 63 respectfully IF they were his children. Older men were notorious for marrying younger and younger women back then, just for the sole purpose of continuing to have children to carry on their lineage. I am a perfect example!! As I stated in my second post; my father was born in 1890 in Llano Co. I was born in 1952 Llano Co ... he was 62 yrs, 2 mon, 26 days old when I was born. My mother was his second wife. She was almost 40 when I was born. So yes, it happens. And in Llano Co, it happened quite often with some of the old family lines.
That's my problem, I know nothing of him other than the name "Strother Jones", the name of friend he associated with "Phillip Smith", and things they liked to do for recreation.

The only one I found that I thought "might" be him is the one in 1930 Wink, Winkler Co, TX census. That one shows to be b. approx 1886. It is told to me by another family member that my father (b. 1890 Llano) worked with/for Strother Jones at some point in time, which would have to be (most likely) between 1930 & 1940 or at very most, into early 1940's. The person telling me this story was b. 1933 Llano and said Strother Jones had the 2 children younger than him (thus b. after 1933).

I was just grasping at straws hoping someone on the board would recall the names. If I had a full name it would sure help of course! Just don't have anything further to go on at this time.
One birth (1947 Gillespie) and second (1949 Llano) for Strother Jones and Louise Achel*. However, both are females. Strother may not have been a Texas-native? Estimating his birth 1915-1925. No "solid" trace for him or birth mother in Texas.

At this time I don't have a lot to go on here, just names and tidbits from someones old memories - hoping someone on list will recall the names and have further info as to what became of these people, and possibly what their full names/dates actually were:

"Strother Jones" and friend "Phillip Smith"

* The general time frame would have been between 1930 & 1940.

* Mr. Jones would also have had at least 2 children, 1 boy & 1 girl born after 1933.

* Strother Jones was considered to be "wealthy". He and his friend Phillip Smith played golf and went to the horse races together.

Ring any bells for anyone??

ANY further clues appreciated!
I wasn't about to raise the question of "kissin' cousins"? That may have been what got Julius Crider killed? Appears the Gage-family early Texas-roots began in Bastrop County? It was there, 18 Jul 1866, that George W. Gage wed Lucinda Gage. George W. Gage (4 Jul 1843 - 26 Mar 1918) was born in Bastrop per death certificate. His parents identified as Moses Gage and Unk Goodman of Tennessee. She was Elizabeth Goodman. In 1870 Bastrop-Not Stated-Image 197, find "Georg" Gage(27), "Lucine"(24), and John(1). Next family: Jesse Gage(54), Martha(51), and Fedore(?)(9). I have no way to establish/prove kinship of Jesse Gage and Moses Gage. Both were Tennessee-natives and families often relocated together.

Awesome info...! I have been working on the Gage tree to get all of the people down so when you do find the info, maybe we can figure out who they were and how they were related. It is great to have so many people working on this...it is amazing to finally be breaking through this brick wall. John Gideon and Jacob Jasper "Jake" were brothers, sons of Lucinda Elizabeth or Ethel Gage...and they had a SISTER named Lou Ethel Gage Rhoades. Not sure if the mother's middle name was Elizabeth or Ethel like her daughters. The mother married a man with the same last name as herself...George Washington S Gage. Hopefully it will all come together soon. Thanks soooo much for all of your work on this.

Mercy, mercy me!!! Ruth Gage Thurmond (5 Jul 1851 - 14 Mar 1943) was daughter of Jesse J. Gage and Martha J. Willetts. She had an older sister, Lucinda, born 1849 per 1850 census of Bastrop County. Her, erroneous, death certificate filed as Mrs. L. E. Coffeey (26 Jan 1846 - 21 Jan 1934). Her son, Jake J., was the informant. Lucinda Gage married, first, George W. Gage 18 Jul 1866 in Bastrop. Therefore, brothers John G. and Jake J. Gage were Bert Thurmond's first cousins.

RESEARCH UPDATE: Found some interesting info in Llano District Clerk archives but no trial transcript. It is archived in Austin and I have requested copies. Should see what it may hold in a few days.

In Llano District Court Archives I found

1.A list of witnesses called by defense and by the state. Two for the defense were JOHN GAGE and JAKE J. GAGE. (I believe they are brothers of LOU ETHEL GAGE RHOADES and it is known THURMOND's mother was RUTH GAGE)

2.Also a hand written note that JULIUS CRIDER had searched out peace officers and made them aware of the troubles.

3.The charge to jurors by judge that verbal threats only did not justify homicide.

From the above I infer that threats had been made, probably by both men, but certainly by CRIDER because the Llano 1940 census I searched had JAKE J. GAGE and wife MAUDE living next door to JULIUS and OLA MAE CRIDER. Speculation that GAGE was called by the defense to testfy to hearing Crider make the threats. IF Gage testified, perhaps the transcript will finally answer some questions. Will post what I find.

A year ago, I heard from a cousin, that four Cady brothers had gotten into a gunfight with a Army Lieut, and Sergeant. I have never been able to find any record of this.

But, the possible timeframe would be after 1875 and before 1900. As the Sergeant was black, they would have been in the 9th or 10th Calv. In looking, James was married in 1869 and he moved to New Mexico in 1888. Benjamin did not have four son's. Only Joseph Daniel had that many son's. He lived in LLano Co,TX with Benjamin and James. There other brothers are accounted for, except William who died in 1855 in La Grange.

None of Joseph Daniels son's never married and at least two died young. JD and James served in the Confederate Army. But, the gun fight probably had nothing to do with reconstruction only self defense.

Searching for JOHNSON family that lived in SANDY MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY Census records may show up as Click Community or Cove Community. Don't know why as there was a post office in Sandy Mountain NOT Sandy Valley.

thanks

To: jcady622

You mention verbal family history of a confrontation with soldiers during Reconstruction....Was this supposed to have happened in Llano County?

I ask because my gg grandfather SAMUEL WILLIAM TATE was actually arrested and imprisioned in Travis Co for several months. He was a strong supporter of the Confederacy and his trading post was a community meeting place. He was arrested at his home and store.

I know there was a connection between the CADY and TATE family of Sandy Mt community but as I said before suspect it was due to political views and Masonic ties o ther than family ties.

Thanks
